It's my understanding that Comirnaty either isn't in production yet and/or there is very little available - surely not enough to replace the Moderna shots. It wouldn't be surprising if they just use the existing Pfizer and simply identify it as Comirnaty.
Interesting point, JEEP, it's all very unclear but it could be that Comirnaty is used already alongside the Pfizer/BioNTech shot. I found
this site from Reuters, which states on 28th May 2021, that
'The vaccine is already being used in the European Union for those aged 16 and above...
The EMA said two doses of the vaccine, branded as Comirnaty, were required in the 12-15 age group...'
According to
Pfizer's own site with respect to Comirnaty, they stated on 19th April 2021:
“To date, we have met all of our supply commitments to the EC and we plan
to deliver 250 million doses [of Comirnaty] to the European Union
in Q2, a four-fold increase on Q1’s agreed quantity.” Apparently, according to the information on the site, the
remaining 350 million doses will be delivered in 2021 (so a total of 600 million doses).
However, as per their website, on May 20th, 2021, a
new agreement was made to:
- New agreement to supply 900 million doses of Corminaty to the European Commission (EC), with option to request up to an additional 900 million doses
- Additional dose deliveries beginning December 2021 through 2023
- Pfizer and BioNTech have now committed a total of up to 2.4 billion doses of COMIRNATY® to the EC since the beginning of the pandemic
This new agreement
is in addition to the 600 million doses that have already been committed to the EU through 2021. The additional 900 million agreed doses are expected to be delivered on a monthly schedule
beginning December 2021 and continuing into 2023. As part of the agreement, the EC also has an
option to increase the number of doses delivered by up to an additional 900 million, bringing the total number of potential doses delivered to the EC, inclusive of all agreements, to up to 2.4 billion. All doses for the EC are planned to be manufactured in the European Union.
That's a lot of doses for 455 million inhabitants (including Norway)! By the way,
according to this website, Comirnaty’s site in Saint Rémy sur Avre, France, operated by Delpharm, will manufacture finished product. European Medicines Agency (EMA) states that the site will provide up to 51 million additional doses in 2021. EMA has also approved a new manufacturing line at BioNTech’s manufacturing site in
Marburg, Germany, (oh, what's in a name;) ), which increases the active substance manufacturing capacity by approximately 410 million doses
in 2021.
And according to these statistics from 5th October 2021, it seems as though Comirnaty is being used indiscriminately alongside the Pfizer/BioNTech shot (just go with the cursor on the stats):
As of July 21, 2022, most countries in the European Economic Area (EEA) had received the majority of their COVID-19 vaccine stock from Comirnaty (Pfizer/BioNTech).
www.statista.com
From these statistics it can be seen that:
Denmark's use of Moderna was only 15% vs Pfizer at 83% (the highest in the EEA);
Iceland's Moderna use at 11% vs Pfizer at 65%;
Finland's in for 15% Moderna vs 76% Pfizer;
Stats relating to Sweden and Norway from
this site (updated 21 hours ago):
Sweden's use of Moderna at 0.097% vs Pfizer 76.38%; and
Norway's use of Moderna at 39.9% vs Pfizer at 56%.
[Only Liechtenstein has a massive 73% use of Moderna vs 27% of Pfizer, wonder what they will do, if anything].
So one question that comes to mind is whether some faction is trying to push Moderna out alltogether.
