Turkey searches Black Sea for lost sailors following deadly storms

Turkey has launched a rescue mission to hunt for 11 missing sailors after deadly storms sank a cargo vessel, killing one.

The ship sank in the Black Sea amid a burst of stormy weather, killing at least one sailor and leaving the remaining 11 crew members missing, Turkey’s interior minister said on Monday.

The weather front that wrecked the vessel killed at least nine people, including the sailor, over the weekend in Turkey.

Moscow is already going through its first major snowfall. Meteorologists have described the weather pattern over the Russian capital as a “black blizzard” – a phenomenon usually encountered in the Far North, when snowflakes fly almost parallel to the surface, decreasing visibility to around 100 meters.

The snowfall that started on Sunday intensified overnight, with 35% of the monthly average of precipitation already falling in the city, according to the FOBOS weather center.

The head of Russia’s Hydrometeorological Center, Roman Vilfand, warned that “it’s going to be one of the strongest snowfalls that ever happened in November.” According to Channel One, Moscow last experienced extreme end-of-autumn weather like this back in 1977.

BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) — Heavy snowfall and strong blizzards in Romania and Moldova on Sunday left one person dead and hundreds of localities without electricity, as well as forcing the closure of some national roads, authorities said.

A 40-year-old man in Moldova died on Sunday after the vehicle he was in skidded off the road and crashed into a tree, Moldova’s national police said, adding that six road accidents had been reported by about midday.

“We repeatedly appeal to drivers not to hit the road with unequipped cars and to drive at low speed,” Moldovan police said in a statement posted on Telegram, and warned against driving “without an urgent need.”

In Romania, red weather warnings were issued in the eastern counties of Constanta, Tulcea, Galati, and Braila where winds were forecast to reach as high as 100 kph (62 mph), the National Meteorological Administration said.

Romania’s Minister of Energy Sebastian Burduja told The Associated Press on Sunday that more than 400 localities had suffered electrical outages.

Emergency authorities said that both national and local roads in the four counties were closed on Sunday. Officials in the counties of Constanta and Braila reported that at least 69 localities had been left without electricity but that teams had been deployed to fix the outages. Other, less severe weather warnings were also issued to other parts of Romania.

In neighboring Bulgaria, powerful winter storms also brought heavy snowfall and prompted the government to declare a state of emergency on Sunday in large parts of the country. More than 1,000 settlements, mostly in Bulgaria’s northeast, were left without electricity on Sunday, according to Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov.

Two people in Bulgaria had died in traffic accidents and 36 were left injured during the stormy weather in the last 24 hours. Strong winds also closed roads, caused traffic accidents and travel delays, and downed trees and power lines, Denkov said.

Following a three-day snowfall event, Russia’s Volga region has been buried under a foot of snow — abnormally high totals for November.
The November norm for the city of Ulyanovsk–for example–is 8 cm (3.15 inches) but, and with a week of the month left to run, 24 cm (9.45 inches) of snow has already been documented.
Likewise in Izhevsk, the capital of the Udmurtia Republic, snowdrifts are “a month ahead of the calendar,”

A storm warning for strong winds with gusts of 15-20 m/s is in force in the region on November 27. In Voronezh, during the last 24 hours, maximum gusts reached 16-18 m/s. In Tambov, Belgorod and Lipetsk: 14-15 m/s.
The temperature continues to fluctuate from high to low. Last night thermometers marked in the capital of the Black Earth Region a reverse diurnal cycle (the temperature rose), up to +6 °C. A strong wind with such a "strong" plus destroys the snow cover literally before our eyes. During the day the reverse diurnal variation of temperature will be maintained. Next night in the Black Earth Region there will be frost at -2...-7, and on the roads will form ice, heavy in some places. reports gismeteo.ru.

Looking ahead, “prolonged and heavy snowfalls will not stop in the coming days,” so states hmn.ru, speaking to Izhevsk. “In connection with this, there is another transport collapse in the city.

For the majority of Europe, winter looks set to begin early as an Arctic Outbreak threatens to grip the continent:
On Thursday a low pressure system will arrive with new weather turbulence. While its northern slope will remain cold with snow or sleet, somewhat milder air masses will arrive in the south of the country. There, precipitation is likely to return to showers up to an altitude of 1,000 meters and a thaw will occur.
The combined weather and temperature radar for Europe and Germany shows how persistent the established weather situation really is. The boundary between cold and milder air continues to oscillate throughout the week.

Explanation: Sometimes lightning occurs out near space. One such lightning type is red sprite lightning, which has only been photographed and studied on Earth over the past 25 years. The origins of all types of lightning remain topics for research, and scientists are still trying to figure out why red sprite lightning occurs at all. Research has shown that following a powerful positive cloud-to-ground lightning strike, red sprites may start as 100-meter balls of ionized air that shoot down from about80-km high at 10 percent the speed of light. They are quickly followed by a group of upward streaking ionized balls. Featured here is an extraordinarily high-resolution image of a group of red sprites. This image is a single frame lasting only 1/25th of a second from a video taken above Castelnaud Castle in Dordogne, France, about three weeks ago.The sprites quickly vanished -- no sprites were visible even on the very nextvideo frame.

Here is yesterday’s short forecast on the storm that actually happened today in Black sea -Crimea and Krasnodar region-Anapa down the whole way to Sochi. A lot of damage everywhere. 2 mln people left without electricity.

There is a critical bad weather on the Black Sea. Critical is not a figure of speech, the height of the waves can reach 9 and even 10 meters, although previously it was believed that the maximum height of the waves in the Black Sea can not exceed 8 meters!!! Crimea and the entire Black Sea coast of the Caucasus are under attack. Very strong wind, the blow will reach the coast at night. In Crimea, tomorrow is declared a non-working day, school classes have been canceled in a number of cities in the Krasnodar Territory.
Video unfortunately only in Russian

After a storm in the Krasnodar Territory, a Blue Shark bulk carrier under the flag of Belize washed ashore.

Indeed, yesterday evening and at night Crimea region experienced a "historic" storm dubbed a "storm of the Century".

Apparently it was the strongest storm in the recorded history.

There is a Poseidon system that records wind strength and waves height, etc. Antony links in the above post to the video, where a person talks about this system and shows how it looked when the waves were still far from the shore. You can also take a look at the site here and see how the Black Sea looks like at this moment.

And this is the image that I saved yesterday night. This is how it looked when the waves reached the shore. They were 10 meter (or more) before arriving to the shore. And apparently they were 8 meter when they reached the shore, which is still high.

Frankly, what came to mind that this could be one of those battles in 4D that manifest themselves as weather in 3D. Another possibility that it was a freakish manifistation of a particularly challenging full moon.

November 2023 was a prolific month for thunderstorms in Australia, with 40.5 million lightning strikes detected over the Australian region in the last 30 days.

Late-spring is typically a stormy time of year in Australia due to an abundance of warm air, moisture and atmospheric instability. But even by these typically stormy standards, November 2023 was a BIG month for lightning in Australia.

Weatherzone’s Total Lightning Network detected 40,465,119 individual lightning pulses over the Australian region during November. This count included all lightning detected inside a box bounded by 180ºE to 160ºE and 5ºS to 49ºS.

The map below shows how November’s thunderstorms played out, with storms persisting through every day and night and large amounts of lightning hitting every state and territory.

November’s thunderstorms also brought some welcome rain to parched and fire-weary parts of Australia. While September and October were collectively Australia’s driest two-month period on record, November rainfall was above average over large areas of the Australian mainland. Broad areas of eastern Australia and pockets of most other states and territories even saw monthly rainfall totals falling in the top 10 percent of historical records.

nov_rain_deciles.png
Image: Observed rainfall deciles during November 2023. Blue areas show where rainfall was above average. Source: Bureau of Meteorology.

There were several reasons November produced so many thunderstorms over Australia:
  • Abnormally warm sea surface temperatures surrounding Australia provided abundant moisture for storm development
  • A positive Southern Annular Mode (SAM) during the first half of the month helped to further increase moisture levels over the country’s east and southeast
  • A wavy jet stream over Australian longitudes caused weather systems to slow down and produce lengthy spells of storms over the region

Jessica Cassidy heard thunder in the distance and urged her daughter to leave her neighbour's pool in Berry on the New South Wales South Coast, then within ten minutes the storm hit.

"Our gutters were ripped off the side of the house, there was water everywhere. It sounded like a freight train. A tree fell on the front of a neighbour’s house, but we didn't hear it. It was cyclonic."

Ms Cassidy said her children inside the house were petrified as the storm continued for about 15 minutes.

The New South Wales State Emergency Service responded to almost 200 calls for help as a ribbon of wild storms swept from Newcastle to Bega yesterday afternoon.

In the Southeast Zone, the SES's Deb Muddiman said they received 15 calls for help in Berry.

"A lot of them were fallen trees and damaged roofs. Some of those fallen trees caused issues for power lines and therefore loss of power in Berry," she said.

Jessica Cassidy said as her neighbours on Kangaroo Valley Road emerged from their homes it looked like the "apocalypse".

"Trees were down everywhere. Deck chairs were snapped in half and wedged in trees. Fallen power lines had started a fire in a neighbour’s car, and the firefighters couldn't get close because of the live power," she said.

"It was just insane. Sixteen hours later and we still have inch-thick hail in our front yard."
Another video shows teenagers at a skate park sheltering in a pipe as the storm hit the town.

The nearest official weather station near Nowra showed wind gusts of 54 kilometres per hour at about 6:30pm.

More than 1,000 homes lost power in Kangaroo Valley and 3,740 in Berry.

Around 113 were still without power from Endeavour Energy early this afternoon.

Further north, a man was rescued by the SES after he tried to drive through floodwaters in Randwick in Sydney's east.

A Sydney FC match was delayed by two hours due to lightning strikes, and a music festival at Centennial Park was evacuated.

One of Canadian singer-songwriter Daniel Caesar's performances at the Western Broadwalk of Sydney Opera House was affected.

"There was a thunderstorm so we had to cut the show short. Sorry Sydney," he posted on an Instagram story on Saturday night.

Dylan Bird from the Bureau of Meteorology said the system brought heavy rain.

"Thirty-seven millimetres of rain fell in Campbelltown in less than 20 minutes. That's nearly half a month's rain," he said.
“Parts of southern inland also received 50 millimetres within three hours around the Riverina, while winds were greater than 90kph at Yanco and Condobolin."

He said better weather was on the horizon.

"The upper-level low that moved through has now passed into the Tasman and we are unlikely to see the same level of severe thunderstorm activity today," Mr Bird said.

"Moving into Monday it looks like we could experience a few onshore showers and perhaps some thunderstorms in the northern parts of the coast.

"However, from Tuesday onwards, a drying and warming trend appears likely."
