NAIROBI, Oct. 17 (DPA/EP) - Authorities in Nigeria have raised to more than 600 the number of people killed and 2,400 injured as a result of the recent floods that have ravaged the African country.

According to the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Sadiya Umar Farouq, around 1.3 million people have been forced to flee their homes due to inclement weather.

The Nigerian minister also said that more than 200,000 homes have been destroyed or severely damaged by the floods.

Indeed! That was something to hear this thunder and to see these lightnings almost at the end of October! At least, where I live near Paris, there was no hail, knowing that it was not the region the most impacted, far from it.

From this French source, they now say -according to Keraunos, the French observatory for tornadoes and violent storms- that 53.699 lightnings were detected in France on yesterday September 20th.

Hereafter the number of lightnings on the whole day depending on the department:

Hurricane Roslyn, a Category 4 storm, heads for Mexico's Pacific coast

Hurricane Roslyn grew to Category 4 force on Saturday as it headed for a collision with Mexico's Pacific coast, likely north of the resort of Puerto Vallarta.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Roslyn's maximum sustained winds had increased to 130 mph (215 kph) by midday Saturday, and it was expected to grow still further.

The storm was centered about 155 miles (250 kilometers) south-southwest of Cabo Corrientes — the point of land jutting into the Pacific south of Puerto Vallarta — and moving north-northwest at 8 mph (13 kph).

The forecast called for Roslyn to begin shifting to a northward movement and then northeast, putting it on path that could take it close to Cabo Corrientes and the Puerto Vallarta region on Saturday night or early Sunday before making landfall in Nayarit state on Sunday morning.

#Roslyn is now a category 4 #Hurricane on the #SaffirSimpson scale. Its landfall could be as a category 3 hurricane tomorrow, Sunday, off the coast of #Nayarit.

● Spain
The Armand squall has caused a remarkable change in the weather during these days, leaving important rains in Spain. Although it is already moving away from the country, weather conditions this weekend will not be very different due to the arrival of Beatrice, another squall that will succeed the previous one, as reported by Meteored.

The passage of storm Beatrice leaves torrential rains and strong gusts of wind in Cáceres, Spain.

Firefighters called to flooding across London after storm batters southern England

Firefighters took hundreds of calls on Sunday as a storm battered London, including about flooding across the capital as well as fallen trees and telephone wires.

The London Fire Brigade took more than 780 calls on Sunday, not all of them weather related, as strong winds and heavy rains hit the capital.

Dramatic footage showed Londoners running for cover from the elements.

A London Fire Brigade spokesman said it had “calls to a brick wall on Hungerford Road in Islington which collapsed after being damaged by the storm, multiple calls to flooding across London, trees and telephone wires in precarious positions and a large corrugated roof which had blown into the rear of a building in Croydon damaging the brick work and leaving debris in a precarious position”.

Trains were cancelled on some routes including on Southeastern, and London Overground services were also partly suspended due to “obstructions on the track" at West Croydon and in Theobalds Grove.

Heathrow Airport also experienced delayed flights due to the weather. The Met Office had put in place a yellow storm warning covering London until 5am Monday.

An Adelaide man has died after being struck by lightning in South Australia's Riverland.
The tragedy unfolded near the town of Morgan, about two hours north-east of Adelaide, where it's believed the man and his brother were camping.

The 29-year-old man, from Paralowie in Adelaide was struck in Eba about 10 kilometres east of Morgan at about 5pm on Saturday night.

He died at the scene. His brother had been standing only metres away.

Farmer David Modistach said it was an intense storm.

"We haven't had storms like that here for years and it was good to see, but there was a lot of lightning and thunder," he told 9News.

"You're pretty unlucky to be hit.
The conditions here were so bad at the time of the lightning strike, one of the ambulances called to the emergency became bogged on its way in.

Riverland locals and visitors were stunned by the man's death.

● Paraguay

LATAM plane arrived destroyed at destination with one engine down and a broken windshield

The plane left Santiago de Chile and was bound for Asunción, but was diverted to Foz do Iguazú due to weather conditions. On its return to Paraguay, it suffered breakage and turbulence that caused panic among passengers. The storm had also caused flooding in Asunción.

A truly terrifying trip was made by 48 passengers who departed from Santiago de Chile to Asunción (Paraguay) when the aircraft flew through the strong storm that was developing in the Guarani capital.
According to information provided by Paraguayan media, the plane was supposed to land at Luque airport (near Asunción) but was diverted due to weather conditions and arrived at Foz do Iguazú (Brazil).

After a couple of hours, the aircraft started its journey to the Paraguayan capital and was confronted with the storm. While the reasons for this decision are being investigated, it was confirmed that the aircraft arrived with one engine down, the windshield broken and the "nose" destroyed.

Terrifying
New video of heavy turbulence recorded during a #LATAM flight from #Chile to #Paraguay which left the plane's windshield damaged as well as the plane's engine and nose.

"I was looking for a way to protect it from impact," the passenger added. It was then that the pilot warned that he was going to crash land. "It was endless," the woman added.

London weather: Capital hit by flash flooding amid torrential downpours

Emergency services have responded 45 flooding incidents across London as heavy rain from Storm Claudio hit during the morning rush-hour.

London Fire Brigade received a number of calls from people trapped in their cars, as well as property flooding.

Flood warnings have been issued by the Met Office and Environment Agency across England, including in west London near Ruislip, Wembley and Harrow, and in north London near Waltham and Cheshunt.

A yellow rain warning has been issued for southeast England, with the Met Office warning that flooding on roads will make journey times longer. Up to 30mm of rain is expected.

The downpours have been described as “biblical” by some commuters. One driver on Twitter said they are “probably the wettest and worst conditions I’ve ever driven in”.

A motorist became stuck inside his car as he drove through floodwaters on the A41 at Hendon Way, having to scramble out of the driver’s seat and on to the top of his car, before abandoning his vehicle.

Some train services have also been cancelled or delayed.

“Due to heavy rain flooding the railway between Fulwell and Hampton, all lines are blocked,” Southwestern Rail said in an update.
