E-cigarettes: research - experiments - ideas

In general all vaporizers work with distilled water resp. a mix with water. Some are more leak proof than others. Airflow from the top is safer than from the bottom.
Well, I'd hope so. I have just purchased a vaporizer with 5 different atomizers hoping at least one of them will work with the water. Will get them on Tuesday and see if any of them works. Will let you know the result. I would be so happy to finally phase out the regular cigarettes in favour of nicotine and distilled water.

I also ordered the XRos Pro (25 W, 0.4 ohm coil). I just didn't like handling the bigger model. It came with an extra container/coil) . Both of them leak liquid, through the mouth piece and on the bottom. On top of that it makes a bubbly noise and didn't produce any vape. I couldn't find any explanation or solution when searching online, I was wondering if any of you vape enthusiasts noticed something similar? Or is it just bad luck and I got damaged pieces? The liquid was 50 %VG with nicotine (20 mg) +50%water.

Others will give you more specifics, I'm sure, but from what I heard from some people who used that vape, it leaks and doesn't work with the 50% water solution. It MAY work with 30% water, no idea. But they are made for the oil based liquids.

I bought XRos Pro for the same reason; the others look too big or too pointy or too complicated. 😅

Does it also leak when using commercial liquids?
I´m looking at the pod now and having trouble figuring how it would leak on the bottom. :umm: It has a layer of what looks like some rubber or silicone that should prevent leakage below.

Those containers are supposed to be designed with better anti-leakage. I´ve tried 3 different commercial liquids and now I´m smoking nicotine salt liquid (so, the 4th type of liquid) - and no leaking anywhere.

Ok, with water-based liquid, I can understand if it would leak from above (maybe that vent, where one puts the liquid in the tank, is not designed for water-based liquids), but to leak from below is strange. Sounds like a design flaw, but I still haven´t tried water-based liquids so I cannot say for sure. 🤷‍♀️

If a pod leaks from the bottom it is likely faulty production. If two pods leak from the bottom it is either faulty serial production or even a design flaw. Contact your vendor, if possible.
On top of that it makes a bubbly noise and didn't produce any vape.
This is caused by a liquid overflow into the chimney through which you vape. Try and clean the chimney. One method is to shake it out.

I got an idea, from a cigar smoker point of view. There’s no inhalation when smoking cigars, so I want to try the same but with a vape.

Since I smoke about 3/4 of a decent sized cigar in about 45min to 1hr. I’m basing the whole process off of that.

1. Take a whole cigar and cut it up into pieces, then mix it with a small amount distilled water.

2. Wait for it to infuse the water, then run it trough a coffee filter

3. Mix it 50/50 with VG, it should give me about 1/2 of a cigars worth of nicotine.

It would probably be way too strong to inhale as with a real cigar but I’m not inhaling.

Questions I will have to figure out would be:

1. How much vape liquid does a person go trough in a 45min - 1hr session? ( so I can adjust the amount of water and VG to reproduce a cigar or close)

2. Tastes is going to change since there’s no fire, but is it going to change for better or worse?

3. I’m not sure about the PH levels but I’m assuming it would be fine.

Not sure how it’s going to work but that is my thought process. I still have to source a vape thingamajig that works for this.

I'm not sure about your questions, but I can tell you that cigar smoke is far more alkaline than cigarette smoke.

That's apparently why you're not supposed to inhale cigar smoke: because the alkaline smoke would be too harsh, but you absorb the nicotine in your mouth better.

For ciggies, the smoke is more acidic, which makes it absorb better in the lungs but not the mouth - something like that.

I dunno, that's just what I read... The only thing I can say for sure that for vaping, a pH of 6.5 is veeeery nice in the mouth and lungs.

The XRos 3 is even slimmer, because it has a tinier battery. It's not leaking directly, only sometimes it becomes a bit sticky. Maybe it should not be overfilled, though I fill it till where the mouth peace starts.

Nice experiment.

I still have to source a vape thingamajig that works for this.

I will post one soon. Need to collect some details first.

Here is an example of a leak proof atomizer.

Source: Aliexpress
Name: Profile rda -offered by several shops
Search words: profile rda, rda atomizer

rda = rebuildable drip atomizer
drip, in this case, means that the atomizer is filled from the top by dripping liquid into it. The atomizer has a small liquid well at the bottom with a capacity around 2 ml. Much of the liquid is absorbed by the cotton wick. A leakage from this atomizer is only possible through the air holes (can be closed) when it is turned sideways or through the mouthpiece when turned upside down. A suitable plug for travel would eliminate this problem.

Aliexpress offers quite a variety of rda atomizers. What speaks for the Profile rda is the build deck where both coils and mesh can be used and can be exchanged quite easily by using the clamps. Here is how it looks:

This atomizer needs a battery, of course. There are many options. If a compact size is required, Eleaf has some candidates, for example their model iStick power mono.

In this case the dimensions would be as follows:

Atomizer: H 32,5 x 24 dia

Battery: H 86 x 32 x 39,5

Total height of e-cigarette: 11,85 cm - similar to a pod system

I made my first homemade batch of vape juice with a friend! It turned out really well and was a really fun way to spend some time together. Thanks a bunch for your insight, @broken.english!

Recipe

80g tobacco (dry Northfields organic, a sort of blonde shred)
500 mL hot water
25g sodium carbonate
1 cup olive oil
Vit C tablets
Reverse osmosis water for final product

Equipment

Good music
Scale
Jars & Bowls
Measuring cups and spoons
flavour injector
French Press
Cheese cloth
Empty 30mL containers

First, turn on some good music to set the vibes.

We used these amounts of tobacco and water because that's all that would fit in my French Press.

We put the 25 mg cabonate in the hot water to dissolve, then poured this over the tobacco in the French press. Gave it a stir and let it sit for 30 minutes. It smelled weird.

Getting the liquid out of the French press was a real pain. It formed a pretty solid chunk. I think the metal expanded or something and the plunger wouldn't move! Whatever it was, the plunger was pretty stuck and didn't want to be pulled out. It came eventually, but a lot of tobacco got into the liquid.

We ended up pouring out what liquid we could into some cheesecloth, then dumped the wet tobacco wad into the cloth and squeezed. Not graceful, but it worked.

Then we combined 1 cup organic olive oil to the tobacco juice in a big jar. This amount of oil was chosen at random, as there was no indication for the proper amount in any recipe that I could see. We shook the jar (to migrate the nicotine to the oil), the let it sit to separate. I think we could've let it sit longer. One recipe calls for 1/2 hour separation time. It turns into a golden oil on top, and dark coffee-looking water below.

We used a large kitchen syringe (flavour injector) to remove the top layer of nicotine-oil from the water, and placed this oil in another jar. In the meantime, we dissolved 7x 1000 mg Vit C tablets in about 2 cups hot water.

We combined about 70mL of the Vit C solution to 90 mL of tobacco-oil, and shook it to migrate the nicotine from the oil to the Vit C solution.

Then we made a mistake and added 1/4 tsp of sodium carbonate to this mix in order to alkalize. We should've waited to do this, but we put on our thinking caps and figured the carbonate would only react with the Vit C water, not the oil? So we went ahead.

We let this mixture sit and separate.

Then we used the syringe to remove the top oil layer. It was not easy to get it all. We used a spoon near the end to try to remove the last layer of oil film. Some of the nicotine/vit C suspension was sacrificed, but not much.

This is when we should've added the sodium carbonate, after the oil was removed. Next time.

The final recipe was 30 mL of the homemade juice, 50 mL vg, 20 mL water (not distilled, but reverse osmosis, it's the best I had), and a splash of the flavouring I made, maybe 5 mL.

The flavouring was a 1:10 tincture, 1g of Northfields shred to 10 mL whiskey, let steep 7 days.

The result was excellent! Really smooth, a very reduced throat hit, probably due to the water content and pure vg. Importantly, it was clear that our mix packed with a good amount of nicotine because it gave a head feel similar to the 20mg/mL salt that I vape, although the homemade juice was a little stronger.

I have a IPX80, and puffing at 33W works like a charm.

Once again, domo arigato, @broken.english sensei!
