Earthquakes around the world

OMG! That´s crazy!

Thank you, Puma, for these reports! :flowers:
Do you calculate that energy release? I couldn´t see/find it on VolcanoDiscovery...

In any case, thank you and those numbers really put the current global events with earthquakes in a different perspective. :scared:

Hello, the calculation is made by Volcanodiscovery and appears at the end of its list of earthquakes which includes from magnitude 3.

chrome_screenshot_27 nov. 2023 08_54_01 GMT-06_00.png

In the following link you can read the explanation of how it is calculated.

Yes, it is incredible the amount of energy that an earthquake can release, especially when it comes to strong (M5.6 to M6.2) very strong (M6.3 to M7.5) or severe (M7.6 to 8+) earthquakes, generally these are equivalent to atomic bombs, while light (<=M4.9) and moderate (M5.0 to M5.5) earthquakes are commonly equivalent to kilowatt hours or TNT explosions.

For example, the explosion that blew up Nord Stream on September 26, 2022 generated an M2.2 earthquake and an energy release of 35 kilowatt hours. While only one of the four M6.3 earthquake recorded in Afghanistan in October 2023 had an estimated energy release of 42502 tons of TNT or 2.7 atomic bombs. It was not uncommon for the epicenter in Zindah Jān Afghanistan to be devastated.

Thanks to all of you for reading and for your messages.

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT NOVEMBER 27_2023

High levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24h. A very strong earthquake shook the northwest coast of Papua New Guinea. The earthquake had a preliminary magnitude according to EMSC of 6.8 and was adjusted to M6.5 In this region a M7+ earthquake was expected but the earthquakes in the Northern Mariana Islands (that today recorded two aftershocks M5.0) fortunately took the pressure off.

The M6.5 earthquake in P.N.G had an intensity of VI (strong) in the province of Sepik, 27 km from the epicenter while in the capital located at 743 km it had an intensity of III (weak) so far no casualties or damage have been recorded despite the estimated energy released equivalent to 5 atomic bombs.

An M5.6 earthquake occurred in the Indian Ocean in the area known as Triple Junction, that is, the place where three tectonic plates meet, the Indo-Australian plate, the African plate, and the Antarctic plate.
shutterstock-2209458489.png
The Vanuatu-New Caledonia region recorded a cluster of M5+ earthquakes and it is in this region where an M6+ event could occur in response to the activity in P.N.G. Let's wait and see.

The total number of earthquakes recorded in the last 24 hours have increased to 925 which can be considered within the normal range of activity. According to Volcano earthquake report the volcanoes with the highest seismic activity (>10 eq) were:
Clear Lake (28 quakes between mag 0.3-1.7) Eldey (12 quakes between mag 0.2-2.7), Fagradalsfjall (69 quakes between mag 0.1-2.6) Reykjanes (26 quakes between mag 0.1-3.0)

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT NOVEMBER 28_2023

Moderate levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24h. A strong M5.8 earthquake shook the region of Vanuatu, which yesterday recorded 3 moderate M5+ earthquakes. The energy of the seismic activity in the Philippines, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea will move towards the region of Japan, Kamchatka Peninsula and Alaska as well as Tonga region (M5.1) and towards Central and South America.

This is why we will start to see earthquakes in the M5+ range like the ones that happened today in the Kuril Islands in Russia (M5.1) and in the Fox Islands in Alaska (M5.6)

According to Jesus Ramos Ka-tet latest analysis It is possible that we may see an M7+ earthquake in the region comprising Taiwan and southern Japan, as well as the Kamchatka Peninsula while for China (the Xinjiang region is having M4+ seismic activity) an M6+ and in the worst case M6.5 earthquake is possible.

So far there has been no significant seismic compensation in the Americas, but this could change in the next few days, it is the turn of Central and South America, including southeastern Mexico and the Caribbean. The Caribbean region of Barbados recorded an M5.1 earthquake while an M4.9 quake shook the Galapagos Triple Junction, which is an indicator that energy is about to impact the Americas.
shutterstock-2209458489.png
Central America, Peru, Ecuador and Colombia could register a M6+ earthquake and in the worst case a M7.3 earthquake.

The total number of earthquakes recorded in the last 24 hours have decreased to 775 which can be considered within the normal range of activity. According to Volcano earthquake report the volcanoes with the highest seismic activity (>10 eq) were:
Brennisteinsfjöll (20 quakes between mag 0.1-1.1), Clear Lake (28 quakes between mag 0.2-1.4) Fagradalsfjall (14 quakes between mag 0.1-2.0) Reykjanes (16 quakes between mag 0.1-1.6),

Recent quakes worldwide map shows the distribution of the last 20 large earthquakes. We see the concentration of seismic events in Southeast Asia, most of them light to moderate. On the American side we see a line of earthquakes going from the Galapagos Islands region to the Caribbean Sea and isolated earthquakes in Oman (M4.8, possibly in response to yesterday's M5.6 earthquake in the Indian Ocean Triple Junction), Japan, Russia and Alaska.

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT NOVEMBER 29_2023

Low levels of seismic activity occurred in the last 24 hours. Today's magnitude 5.0 earthquakes were only recorded by the European agency EMSC; otherwise we would have had a 24-hour seismic silence. The most significant events of the period were the mild M4.8 and M5.0 earthquakes that were recorded in Peru. The M5.0 earthquake had a depth of 217 km and practically the population could have felt it very mild. Let's hope that this earthquake is not a precursor because Peru is on alert for a possible M7 event

The total number of earthquakes recorded in the last 24 hours have decreased to 743 which can be considered within the normal range of activity. According to Volcano earthquake report the volcanoes with the highest seismic activity (>10 eq) were:

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT NOVEMBER 30_2023

Moderate levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24h. A 5.8 magnitude earthquake shook the South Sandwich Islands, this earthquake indicates that the energy of the last earthquakes in Southeast Asia (M6+ and M7.1) is reaching South America. In fact, this earthquake takes pressure off the area of Chile, but the energy is still concentrated in Central America, as well as in Ecuador, Peru and Colombia. It would be good news for central and northern South America if this energy were to be released in Mid-Atlantic Ridge.

The earthquakes in Southeast Asia (Fiji M5.0 and Indonesia M5.0) have been very light and moderate after the great seismic activity in the past days. Now the response is expected towards South America, Japan, Kamchatka Peninsula and Alaska, in fact, the Kuril Islands in Russia, the Fox Islands in Alaska and today Adak Islands also in Alaska have already presented moderate M5+ earthquakes.

The total number of earthquakes recorded in the last 24 hours have decreased to 792 which can be considered within the normal range of activity. According to Volcano earthquake report the volcanoes with the highest seismic activity (>10 eq) were:
Clear Lake (31 quakes between mag 0.2-2.6),Fagradalsfjall (14 quakes between mag 0.1-1.6) Reykjanes (24 quakes between mag 0.1-1.5)

Recent quakes worldwide map shows the distribution of the last 20 large earthquakes. We see a line of light to moderate earthquakes from Myanmar and China to the Fiji region. In the Americas, light earthquakes are observed in Chile and in southeastern Mexico, in the region of Oaxaca.

An earthquake of at least magnitude 7.5 struck Mindanao in the southern Philippines late on Saturday, triggering evacuation orders for some areas and southwestern Japanese coasts because of warnings of tsunami waves of a metre (3 feet) or more.

The Philippine Seismology Agency Phivolcs said the waves could hit the Philippines by midnight (1600 GMT) and continue for hours.

The US Tsunami Warning System said there could be waves of up to 3 metres above the tide level along some Philippine coasts.

Meanwhile, the Japanese broadcaster NHK said tsunami waves of up to a metre were expected to reach Japan's southwestern coast around 30 minutes later - by 1:30 a.m. on Sunday (1630 GMT on Saturday).

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT DECEMBER 02_2023

Extreme levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24h. What happened today was crazy. Imagine 5 hours of seismic activity that started with a powerful M7.6 earthquake and subsequent aftershocks ranging from M4+ to M6+... Well, that happened in the Mindanao and Barcelona regions of the Philippines and at the Philippine-Pacific plate boundary. At least 28 aftershocks with magnitudes above 4.5 were registered over the next 5 hours. The strongest were M5.8 at 15:06 UTC, M6.4 at 16:03, M6.2 at 17:40, M6.2 at 18:09, and M6.0 at 20:52.
shutterstock-2209458489.png
This M7+ earthquake was expected to occur closer to the Taiwan region and southern Japan but not with the extraordinary number of aftershocks.
The USGS issued a Green alert for shaking-related fatalities. There is a low likelihood of casualties. 1 240 000 people are estimated to have felt very strong shaking, 2 865 000 strong, 7 028 000 moderate and 19 275 000 light.

The estimated energy released from this M7.6 earthquake according to Volcanodiscovery was 236.7 atomic bombs. This energy will move toward Central America, especially toward southeastern Mexico in the next few days.

It is a fact that the month of December starts with great seismic activity. In South America, Chile recorded a strong M5.8 and a moderate M5.1 earthquake while in the South Atlantic Ocean a M5.0 foreshock occurred. East Asia Bangladesh was shaken by an M5.5 earthquake, in Southeast Asia Indonesia recorded three M5+ earthquakes, the Solomon Islands an M5.1 earthquake. The Macquarie Islands in southern Australia had an M5.1 earthquake. The energy is also moving towards the Caribbean and the region of the island of Guadeloupe was shaken by an M5.2 earthquake.

There are many questions as to why this happened.

Is this a consequence of the severe G3 geomagnetic storm of December 1?
The geomagnetic field has been at quiet to severe storm levels for the past 24 hours. On December 1 Solar wind speed reached a peak of 567 km/s (Moderately high speed) at 14:43 UTC. Total IMF reached 28 nT at 19:22 UTC
● Minor G1 geomagnetic storm (Kp5) threshold reached at 01:03 UTC
● Moderate G2 geomagnetic storm (Kp6) threshold reached at 01:05 UTC
Strong G3 geomagnetic storm (Kp7) threshold reached at 01:11 UTC
● Minor G1 geomagnetic storm (kp5) threshold reached at 23:35 UTC
Why didn't the same thing happen in similar and past geomagnetic storms? Or after X-class flares? It is a shame that SSGEOS no longer publishes its planetary and lunar geometry analysis as a protest against what is happening in Gaza. I suspect that the cosmic environment together with the very strong impact of the solar magnetic field with the Earth's magnetic field that reached 28 nano Teslas had a lot to do with it. (Under normal conditions, the value is less than 9 nT.)

The total number of earthquakes recorded in the last 24 hours have decreased to 800 despite the extreme seismic activity. According to Volcano earthquake report the volcanoes with the highest seismic activity (>10 eq) were:
Clear Lake (12 quakes between mag 0.3-2.1) Fagradalsfjall (17 quakes between mag 0.1-1.3) Kilauea (40 quakes between mag 0.4-2.5), Reykjanes (42 quakes between mag 0.1-1.8),
1701563763257.png

Recent quakes worldwide map shows the distribution of the last 20 large earthquakes. It is clear that the activity was concentrated in the Philippines region with isolated earthquakes in Chile, Bangladesh and Macquarie Islands.
