Earthquakes around the world

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT DECEMBER 07

Very high levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24h. It started with a very strong M7.1 earthquake south of Vanuatu at 12:56 UTC. An estimated 1,000 people felt strong shaking, 41,000 felt moderate shaking and 175,000 felt light shaking. Although a tsunami warning was issued, it was deactivated one hour after the event. There are no reports of damage or casualties and this earthquake occurs in response to the strong seismic activity in the Philippines following the M7.6 earthquake and more than 1700 aftershocks. The energy from M7.1 will move toward South America in the next few days.

In fact, the first shock wave following the M7.6 earthquake in the Philippines is reaching the Americas and two strong M5.8 earthquakes were recorded. One of them occurred off the coast of southern Chile and the second in the state of Puebla, Mexico. This last earthquake was adjusted by SSN to magnitude 5.7 at a depth of 48 km and was felt moderately in Mexico City. An M6 earthquake was also expected after the one in Hawaii with magnitude 5.1. Let's hope that the earthquake in Puebla is not a precursor.
On the other hand, the energy of the strong activity in the Philippines reached the island of Samoa, which registered a M5.0 earthquake and the island of Hawaii, which registered a M5.1 earthquake. This means bad news for the Mexican territory as the possibility of a significant event in the next few days is growing. Let's wait and see.
chrome_screenshot_4 dic. 2023 19_23_07 GMT-06_00.png
Seismic activity continues in the Mindanao region of the Philippines but now moderately and less frequently, the highest magnitude earthquake was 5.4 in Aras-asan. Just as the energy is being distributed to Central and South America (El Salvador recorded a M4.7), it is also being distributed to China, Central Asia and even to the Aden Sea. Taoluo on the east coast of China recorded an M5.1 earthquake while Azerbaijan an M5.4 and Las Khorey, Somalia an M5.1.

The total number of earthquakes recorded in the last 24 hours remained at the same record as yesterday with 395, below the average and this is quite strange. Is it a Volcanodiscovery error? Or is Mother Earth cooking something for us? According to Volcano earthquake report the volcanoes have registered little seismic activity for the second consecutive day, we are talking about one or two earthquakes at most.

Recent quakes worldwide map shows the distribution of the last 20 large earthquakes. We continue to see the concentration of seismic activity from Central Asia to the Kermadec Islands. A new sequence started today with the M7.1 earthquake in Vanuatu and we will see the responses in the coming days.

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT DECEMBER 09_2023

Moderate levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24h. The seismic clustering continues in the Reykjanes Ridge with two M5.0 and M5.1 earthquakes with M4+ earthquakes in between. Commonly a M5+ seismic sequence ends with a significant M6+ event. Let's see what happens in the next hours.

After the M5.8 earthquake in Puebla Mexico, the tectonic wave continued its path and now reached the Caribbean. The Virgin Islands northwest of Puerto Rico recorded a strong M5.7 earthquake.

It should be added that what happened in Mexico is known as bending quake.

Mexico City earthquake was rare ‘bending’ quake
At most subduction zones, after one tectonic plate slides beneath a neighboring plate, it continues on a diagonal downward dive and sinks deep into the Earth’s mantle.
Not in Mexico. There, the initial contact between the two tectonic plates – which collide off the country’s southern Pacific coast – starts off normally enough, with the subducted plate sinking diagonally downwards.
But then, just as it begins to jut underneath the Mexican mainland, the plate – which is made of dense, heavy rocks – reverses course. It bends upward, sliding itself horizontally beneath the plate Mexico sits on top of.
Then, underneath Puebla state – just south of Mexico City – at a depth of about 30 miles (48 km) below ground, the subducted plate abruptly changes direction once more. It dives almost vertically downward, plunging itself deep into the Earth’s mantle.
When the plate bends downward, some of the rocks in the plate break. This is what causes “bending” earthquakes like Mexico City’s. After the bent tectonic plate snaps, seismic waves emanate outwards from the breaking point, causing the Earth to tremble. The closer you are to the epicenter, the stronger the shaking.
file-20180311-30989-d9afqb.jpg
What is expected now is that there will be a response of this bending quake towards the west coast of Mexico, mainly Jalisco, Guerrero and Oaxaca with a M5+ earthquake and in the worst case up to M6.7.

The total number of earthquakes recorded in the last 24 has decreased to 958 which is the normal range of activity. According to Volcano earthquake report the volcanoes with the highest seismic activity (>10 eq) were:
Clear Lake (39 quakes between mag 0.2-2.8), Fagradalsfjall (31 quakes between mag 0.3-1.5) Reykjanes (38 quakes between mag 0.1-3.0), Salton Buttes (20 quakes between mag 1.5-3.2)
1702166036727.png

Recent quakes worldwide map shows the distribution of the last 20 large earthquakes. Activity in the Reykjanes Ridge, and activity in Central Asia and the Japan region were noteworthy. The severe seismic activity in Southeast Asia over the past few days is having its response mainly to the west and significant events are expected to the east mainly to the Americas.

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT DECEMBER 11_2023

Moderate seismic activity has been recorded in the last 24 hours. A strong M6.1 earthquake struck the Tonga region at a considerable depth of 238 km. An estimated 17,000 people felt light shaking and the USGS issued a green alert for fatalities and economic losses related to the tremor. This earthquake is a response to the past M7.1 earthquake in Vanuatu. The energy should also move to South America but so far no significant event (M6+) has been recorded, especially towards the region of Peru and Ecuador, because further south, in Chile, the earthquakes have occurred as expected. In the past 24h San Antonio de los Cobres Argentina recorded a M5.5 earthquake and further south in the Scotia Sea a M5.7 earthquake occurred.
chrome_screenshot_4 dic. 2023 19_23_07 GMT-06_00.png

The total number of earthquakes recorded in the last 24 has decreased to 895 which is the normal range of activity. According to Volcano earthquake report the volcanoes with the highest seismic activity (>10 eq) were:
Clear Lake (27 quakes between mag 0.2-1.7)Fagradalsfjall (11 quakes between mag 0.3-1.0), Reykjanes (29 quakes between mag 0.1-1.9),

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT DECEMBER 13_2023

Moderate levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24h. Two moderate earthquakes shook the Norwegian Sea with a magnitude of 5.3 and 5.5, possibly related to the movement of energy from the seismic cluster on the Reykjanes Ridge which has considerably decreased its earthquakes.
shutterstock-2209458489.png
Mongolia, Pakistan and the Bengal Sea in eastern India recorded moderate M5+ activity. So far the seismic activity has not posed any danger to the populations near the epicenters.

The total number of earthquakes recorded in the last 24 has decreased to 916 which is the normal range of activity. There was a slight increase in the seismic activity of the volcanoes, mainly in Kilauea. According to Volcano earthquake report the volcano with the highest seismic activity (>10 eq) were:
Clear Lake (28 quakes between mag 0.7-3.5), Fagradalsfjall (22 quakes between mag 0.2-1.3), Kilauea (26 quakes between mag 1.6-2.9), Reykjanes (30 quakes between mag 0.1-1.5)

Recent quakes worldwide map shows the distribution of the last 20 large earthquakes.Seismic activity with earthquakes greater than M4.5 continues to concentrate along a line from the Norwegian Sea to Samoa Island in the Pacific Ocean. An isolated earthquake occurred south of the eastern Pacific ridge.

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT DECEMBER 14_2023

Moderate levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24h. Seismic activity that occurred around the Ring of Fire with M5+ earthquakes being M5.5 the strongest and occurred in the southern East Pacific Rise, which had its response in the Sandwich Islands with a magnitude of 5.4.

Seismic silence is finally broken in Central America. The coast of Chiapas in Mexico was shaken by an M5.0 earthquake while an M5.4 occurred in Guatemala. An M5.0 earthquake on the northern Mid-Atlantic Ridge occurred very early and could have influenced the activity in Central America.

A couple more of "micro earthquakes" - is the term is used now - at Mexico City. Both locations are quite near or same place from two days ago.

Were today's earthquakes heard? Some heard a rumble with today's CDMX quake

During the two microquakes today, December 14, 2023, in the CDMX, some people heard a rumble.

The National Seismological Service reported two earthquakes with epicenter in Mexico City:

The first had magnitude 3.2 with epicenter northeast of the Magdalena Contreras mayoralty.
The second, of magnitude 2.4, had its epicenter in Alvaro Obregón.

But apart from the shock caused by the tremor, were today's earthquakes heard?

In social networks began to circulate posts where people living in the CDMX reported having heard a rumble with today's tremor.

Christa Von Hillebrant-Andrade, geologist and former director of the Puerto Rico Seismic Network (RSPR), explained in 2020 that the rumbling sound heard seconds before an earth movement responds to the sound produced after the fracture of the earth's crust.

The geologist said that a rumble results from the collision between rocks, which happens every time an earthquake occurs, regardless of its magnitude.

"This sound is very common in places close to where an earthquake is generated. When the seismic wave reaches the surface it creates an acoustic wave, which is what you hear with that noise, and then the shaking happens." said the geologist

On the other hand, the geophysicist Peggy Hellweg, said that a rumble occurs from P (primary) sound waves, which are the ones that produce noises like a train when it comes at full speed, but it is not easily perceived, and S (secondary) waves are the ones that cause the movement of the earth and can be perceived by everyone.
