Earthquakes around the world

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT DECEMBER 15_2023

Low levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24h. The planet takes a breather after intense seismic activity with M5+ earthquake swarms in the week ending. Only two M5 earthquakes were recorded. One of them in the South Atlantic Ocean ridge and another one in the Banda Sea in Indonesia.

The total number of earthquakes recorded in the last 24 has decreased to 828 which is the normal range of activity. According to Volcano earthquake report the volcano with the highest seismic activity (>10 eq) were:
Clear Lake (36 quakes between mag 0.3-1.7) Fagradalsfjall (10 quakes between mag 0.5-2.0), Kilauea (15 quakes between mag 1.1-2.9) , Reykjanes (20 quakes between mag 0.4-1.7)

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT DECEMBER 16_2023

Moderate levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24h. Significant seismic activity occurred in the western Pacific Ocean. A new seismic cluster began in the Maug Islands region, Northern Mariana Islands. The sequence began with a strong M5.7 earthquake from which M4.7, M4.8 and M5.0 aftershocks occurred further south in Indonesia an M5.0 earthquake shook the island of Pariaman, while to the southeast of the Fiji Islands an M5.4 earthquake shook the region

The total number of earthquakes recorded in the last 24 has decreased to 821 which is the normal range of activity. Reykjanes volcano recorded an increase in seismic activity compared to yesterday (from 20 to 58 earthquakes). WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT DECEMBER 19_2023

Moderate levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24h. China was shaken by another earthquake, this time in the Tumxuk region with a magnitude of 5.2. The death toll from the M5.9 earthquake in Gansu province reached 127. It is worth mentioning that this earthquake was registered by China Earthquake Networks Center as magnitude 6.2 and so far remains at the same magnitude. The affected region faced significant challenges due to its cold and mountainous terrain, exacerbating the difficulties in providing assistance and relief.

The total number of earthquakes recorded in the last 24 has decreased to 941 which is slightly above of the normal range of activity. Fagradalsfjall and Reykjanes volcanoes recorded an increase in seismic activity compared to yesterdau, Fagradalsfjall from 55 to 71 and Reykjanes from 40 to 104. According to Volcano earthquake report the volcanoes with the highest seismic activity (>10 eq) were:
Clear Lake (32 quakes between mag 0.3-1.7), Eldey (11 quakes between mag 1.2-2.0) Fagradalsfjall (71 quakes between mag 0.1-3.7), Reykjanes (104 quakes between mag 0.1-4.1)

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT DECEMBER 20_2023

Moderate levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24h. A strong earthquake M6.2 hit southern Peru at 07:11 local time. 71 000 people are estimated to have felt moderate shaking and 2 023 000 light. The USGS issued a Green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage.

A significant earthquake was already expected for the region of Peru. It was expected to be M6+ and in the worst case M7
A strong M6.1 earthquake struck the Tonga region at a considerable depth of 238 km. An estimated 17,000 people felt light shaking and the USGS issued a green alert for fatalities and economic losses related to the tremor. This earthquake is a response to the past M7.1 earthquake in Vanuatu. The energy should also move to South America but so far no significant event (M6+) has been recorded, especially towards the region of Peru and Ecuador...
