WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT AUGUST 21_2024

Moderate levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24 hours. We have a seismic cluster (earthquakes M5+) which could mean a significant event soon. SSGEOS issued a large earthquake warning: "Most critical time will be from 19 to 23 August" so we are still within the period.

● M 5.2 - 121 km SE of Kuqa, China/ 23:38:01 (UTC)/10.0 km depth/ USGS

A strong M5.5 earthquake struck on the border between Bolivia and Argentina. The earthquake had an intermediate depth of 267 km so more events could be expected in the region. No aftershocks have been recorded so far. USGS issued a Green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses.

The energy of the seismic swarm in Hawaii is moving towards Central America and Nicaragua and Guatemala registered M4.8 earthquakes while the Mexican Southeast, specifically Tonala Chiapas registered a M4.0 earthquake.

M5.4 earthquake in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia was an aftershock of the 7.0 quake North Pacific Ocean, 103 km east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Kamchatka, Russia on August 08

For the time being, according to SSGEOS, there is a 90% probability of a M6+ earthquake. Let's wait and see.

The M5+ earthquakes were concentrated in a single region between the Banda Sea in Indonesia and the Bismark Sea and Solomon Sea in Papua New Guinea.

Other moderate earthquakes in the region occurred in Gorontalo, Indonesia M4.6, Fiji Region M4.9, Pondaguitan, Philippines M4.9, Tobelo, Indonesia M4.8, Isangel, Vanuatu M4.7, Ambon, Indonesia M4.0.

As mentioned above, the activity in Hawaii is related to volcanic activity. The strongest quake had a magnitude 4.7

As this report is being written, an earthquake has occurred in Australia. Geoscience Australia (GeoAu) reported the quake as M5.0 and BMKG as M5.2

The closest larger town where the quake was felt is Maitland, a town with 67,000 inhabitants in Australia, in 79 km (49 mi) distance southeast of the epicenter. No aftershocks have been recorded so far. The strongest-ever (since 1900) recorded quake in this area measured magnitude 5.4. It occurred 35 years ago.

In the past 24 hours, there were 1,153 quakes of magnitudes up to 5.1:

●4 quakes above magnitude 5
●38 quakes between magnitude 4 and 5
●106 quakes between magnitude 3 and 4
●259 quakes between magnitude 2 and 3
●746 quakes below magnitude 2 that people normally don't feel.

My kids just told me about it, they’re about an hour away from where the earthquake struck. They didn’t feel anything but a few of their friends did. From what I can see in the news, it was a magnitude 5.0 at Deman, depth of 10km and struck at midday. Aftershocks were felt as far as Newcastle and even Sydney, with some offices evacuating staff & power outages in various places.

An earthquake occurred in Northern NSW a few minutes ago. Preliminary magnitude is 4.6. Location is south of Muswellbrook, near Lake Liddell.

NSW quake struck near site of proposed nuclear reactor
The epicenter of the 4.8 magnitude earthquake that hit NSW today is located on the doorstep of the Liddell coal plant, where Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has declared he would build a nuclear reactor if he wins the next election.

Dutton’s plan has divided public opinion and raised concerns about safety in the fallout of a nuclear accident.

Liddell’s owner, power company AGL, reports there were no impacts to the plant and operations continued following the earthquake - but checks for damage are ongoing.

AGL boss Damien Nicks has ruled out building a nuclear reactor on AGL’s sites because the costs, build time and public opinion rule make it too difficult - but Dutton has said his government would push ahead regardless with compulsory acquisition of sites like Liddell.

A tsunami following an earthquake triggered a meltdown in a coastal nuclear plant in Fukushima in 2011.

Nuclear advocates argue the technology is safe and the risk of accidents is declining.

The World Nuclear Association says Fukushima and Chernobyl are the only two major accidents in six decades of the industry’s commercial operation, spread across 36 countries.
