Second atypical earthquake in South Carolina. Both earthquakes recorded were very shallow.

The 1886 Charleston earthquake caused extensive damage in the city and throughout the Southeast, and was felt as far away as Ontario, Bermuda, and Cuba. Unlike many other parts of the world where earthquakes occur along boundaries between tectonic plates—the Pacific “Ring of Fire” for example—South Carolina earthquakes result from the reactivation of ancient geologic structures associated with much older tectonic events, such as the building of the Appalachian Mountains and the rifting that opened the Atlantic Ocean

EARTHQUAKE REPORT PAST 24HRS

The low level of global seismic activity was broken an hour ago when a 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck the Philippines, which has recorded a total of 28 earthquakes in the past 24 hours. Most of them are earthquakes of between 2 and 3 degrees of magnitude.

According to Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, Philippines is one of the world’s most disaster-prone countries, the Philippines routinely endures earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, landslides, and flooding. This archipelago of 7,640 islands in the Pacific Ocean resides along major tectonic plates and is at the center of a typhoon belt. Its people are among the world’s most vulnerable to hazards.

Estimated seismic energy released: 6.3 x 1013 joules (17.5 gigawatt hours, equivalent to 15080 tons of TNT or 0.9 atomic bombs)

Peru was also hit by an M5.1 earthquake

As we can see, the earthquake in the Philippines contributed the majority of the energy released in the past 24 hours.

EARTHQUAKE REPORT PAST 24HRS

Prior to the M6.1 earthquake in Iran the past 24 hours were characterized by medium to low intensity earthquakes.

The 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck near Bandar-e Lengeh, Hormozgan, Iran. The tremor was recorded early morning on Saturday, July 2nd, 2022, at 1:32 am local time, at a shallow depth of 10 km below the surface.

According with Volcanodiscovery , the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Bandar-e Lengeh (pop. 22,800) located 55 km from the epicenter, Qeshm (pop. 25,000) 103 km away, Bandar Abbas (pop. 352,200) 108 km away, and Bandar Abbas (pop. 352,200) 108 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.

The seismic energy released of this quake:
8.9 x 1013 joules (24.8 gigawatt hours, equivalent to 21301 tons of TNT or 1.3 atomic bombs.

So far, three minor aftershocks have been recorded in Iran
