Tsunami warning issued after 7.9 magnitude earthquake near Tonga

CNN —
"The government of the island nation of Tonga called for an immediate evacuation inland on Friday following what it said was a 7.9 magnitude earthquake that triggered a tsunami warning."

"Earlier this year, Tonga was hit by a record-breaking eruption from an underwater volcano, which released a huge plume of ash, gas and steam up to 20 kilometers into the atmosphere and sent tsunami waves rolling across the Pacific."

Tonga a 7.3 followed by a 7.5

Just to clarify these refer to just the one event - a 7.3 quake and the tsunami warning has been withdrawn by the look of things - anyway at least by NOAA.

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT NOVEMBER 14

After the M6.1 earthquakes in Fiji and Japan, seismic activity remained at moderate levels and in regions where there is usually daily seismic activity. Perhaps it is worth mentioning that a seismic swarm ocurred in Puerto Rico with earthquakes between 2.5 and 3.5 magnitude. Lately Puerto Rico has presented this phenomenon.

If many small tremors occur, will a large earthquake be avoided?

Although many believe that low magnitude earthquakes serve to postpone large magnitude events by relieving pressure on faults, this assumption is considered false. Although low magnitude earthquakes release a small part of the accumulated stress, it is not entirely sufficient or equivalent to the energy release represented by a larger magnitude earthquake. Indeed, the moment magnitude scale is a logarithmic scale in which each unit greater than the previous one represents a release of approximately 32 times more energy. Seismologists have determined that it takes about 32 earthquakes of magnitude 5, 1000 of magnitude 4 or 32 000 of magnitude 3 to equal the amount of energy released by an earthquake of magnitude 6. Thus, 163 840 000 000 earthquakes of magnitude 2 would have to occur to release the stress represented by an event of magnitude 9: this means that it would have to shake a million times a day for about 500 years. So, although low-magnitude earthquakes are much more frequent than major ones, they are not enough to dispel the need for large magnitude events. For comparison, the March 2011 Japan earthquake (mag 9.0) was 631 times larger than the January 2009 Cinchona earthquake (mag 6.2) and released 15,849 times more energy.

Perhaps low-magnitude earthquakes are not a mechanism to prevent major events. However, seismologists have observed that their frequent occurrence or an increase in their occurrence usually precedes events of greater magnitude. This is not an absolute relationship but a frequent observation that allows further study of seismicity and tectonics. To date, it remains impossible to predict the occurrence of a seismic event although it is possible to evaluate the accumulation of stress (by means of statistics) in fault zones and to estimate that an overshoot may occur in these zones at a precise time that remains unknown.
