Japan registered another earthquake, this time with a magnitude of 4.8. I think that the alert of Japanese scientists of the possibility of a mega earthquake in the coming days in the Nankai Trough is something they are taking very seriously, the fact that the Prime Minister canceled a trip to Asia tells us something.

A possible Nankai Trough megaquake and tsunami disaster could kill hundreds of thousands of people and cause a trillion-dollar damage to Japan.

The Nankai Trough (南海トラフ, Nankai Torafu, Southern Sea Trough) is a submarine trough located south of the Nankaidō region of Japan's island of Honshu, extending approximately 900 km (559 mi) offshore. The underlying fault, the Nankai megathrust, is the source of the devastating Nankai megathrust earthquakes, while the trough itself is potentially a major source of hydrocarbon fuel, in the form of methane clathrate.

In plate tectonics, the Nankai Trough marks a subduction zone that is caused by subduction of the Philippine Sea Plate beneath Japan, part of the Eurasian plate. Wikipedia

Japan PM scraps overseas trip after ‘megaquake’ advisory

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on Friday cancelled a four-day trip to Central Asia after government scientists warned Japan should prepare for a possible “megaquake”.

The weather agency said a huge earthquake was more likely in the aftermath of a magnitude 7.1 jolt in the south on Thursday, which left 14 people injured.

Some bullet trains between Tokyo and western Osaka are running more slowly as a precaution, so delays will be possible for about a week, the rail operator said.

Nuclear plants nationwide were also instructed by authorities to double-check their disaster preparations.

Premier Kishida was due Friday to travel to Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Mongolia and attend a regional summit.

“As the prime minister with the highest responsibility for crisis management, I decided I should stay in Japan for at least a week,” he told reporters.

In the past 24 hours, there were 966 quakes of magnitudes up to 5.6:

●6 quakes above magnitude 5
●48 quakes between magnitude 4 and 5
●106 quakes between magnitude 3 and 4
●221 quakes between magnitude 2 and 3
●585 quakes below magnitude 2 that people normally don't feel.

We are observing a concentration of energy in the Southeast Asian region with a response in Russia of M6.5. We could expect the same response in the above mentioned region (Philippines, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Fiji, Tonga, Kermadec Islands or New Zealand) as well as in the west coast of the USA and northwest Mexico although to a lesser degree or in the worst case M6+ low.

Japan Meteorological Agency maintains mega-quake advisory for Nankai Trough

The Japan Meteorological Agency continues to urge caution against a possible mega-quake in the Nankai Trough along the Pacific coast.

The agency says no irregular changes have so far been observed in the crustal strain.

The Meteorological Agency says the probability of a major earthquake in the Nankai Trough is higher than usual. It issued the special advisory urging caution under what is known as the Nankai Trough Earthquake Extra Information protocol.

Agency officials say the advisory does not mean that a quake will definitely strike within a certain timeframe. But they have asked 707 municipalities in 29 prefectures -- extending from around Tokyo in the east to Okinawa in the south -- to check their disaster preparedness.

The government is advising people to secure furniture, and to check evacuation sites and ways to confirm the safety of their family members.

Households with infants, the elderly and people with disabilities are being advised to consider evacuating voluntarily.

SSGEOS Forecast
A convergence of lunar geometry on 10-11 August can result in a cluster of stronger tremors on 11-12 August.
There are indications that August 2024 will be a critical month with the potential of a mega-thrust earthquake, possibly around the 9th, but more likely around the 20th. Be on extra alert, just in case.

Mercury, Venus, Jupiter occurred at 16:54 UTC while Total IMF reached 11 nT at 12:25 UTC So we have the ingredients for a significant event in the coming days.
This is our best estimate of last night's fluctuations. It could indicate the Atlantic near Greenland, the Central Mediterranean near Italy and/or South Africa. Estimated severity is moderate to strong.

Last week saw 3 M6 with the highest being a M6.8 in the Philippines.
In the usual area, there were 4 out of 88 earthquakes worldwide equal to or greater than 4.5 and 1557 out of 1984 quakes of all sizes.
Percentage: 78.5%. (the screen capture does not take the same as area as usual due to being on the road).
Last week saw one M7 (M7.1 in Japan) and one M6, (M6.5 in eastern Russia).
In the usual area, there were 2 out of 82 earthquakes worldwide equal to or greater than 4.5 and 1887 out of 2207 quakes of all sizes.

● M5.0 Earthquake hit Syria

New earthquakes in the eastern Mediterranean region, Greece with M4.5 and Syria with a M5.0 earthquake.

These earthquakes are in addition to those that have occurred in the last 5 days in the region, which indicate a concentration of energy.

Other places where the M5.0 earthquake was reported to have been felt were Lebanon, Turkey, Jordan and Israel. The closest larger town where the quake was felt is Hama, a city with more than 460,000 inhabitants in Syria. For this earthquake, 3 aftershocks have been detected so far. The strongest was a magnitude 3.3 quake that hit 1 hour and 52 minutes after the mainshock.

● M4.4 hit Southern California

A series of moderate earthquakes have occurred in Southern California since 29 July. The quake comes 5 days after M5.2 shook Kern County in Southern California — the strongest to hit the region in 3 years. This quake was followed by 567 aftershocks to 18:53 UTC today. For this M4.4 earthquake, 2 aftershocks have been detected so far. The strongest was a magnitude 2.1 quake that hit 2 minutes after the mainshock

USGS seismologist and a Caltech research associate, Dr. Lucy Jones, noted that the earthquake occurred on the same fault network responsible for the 1987 Whittier Narrows M5.9 earthquake.

Today’s M4.4 quake was felt across Southern California, but there were no reports of major damage. Residents of Highland Park and Alhambra reported windows rattling and objects being knocked down from shelves, while in Pasadena, a water pipe in City Hall burst, the Los Angeles Times reported.

In the past 24 hours, there were 1,008 quakes of magnitudes up to 5.4:

● 4 quakes above magnitude 5
● 36 quakes between magnitude 4 and 5
● 108 quakes between magnitude 3 and 4
● 275 quakes between magnitude 2 and 3
● 585 quakes below magnitude 2 that people normally don't feel.

I cannot rule out the possibility that the earthquake in Syria is aprecursor. The latest lunar geometry does favor a M 6 as we have recently stated, so it is possible. Be on extra alert, just in case. SSGEOS
Aftershocks (smaller earthquakes) in Syria are normal, but it is still possible that the recent activity is a precursor to a larger earthquake. Be on watch, just in case. SSGEOS

The interplanetary magnetic field has been very strong in the last hours exceeding 10nT accompanied by a severe geomagnetic storm G4 (kp8).
