Well, another possibility is, that he hit the dog for the heck of it, just because he could and wanted to. But maybe he underestimated the strength of the blow on the poor dog body, and when he saw the dog collapsing instead of just making noises of being in pain, he got scared that there will be consequences for his actions.

I hear you. But to my mind a psycho would do something like that 'for the hell of it' only if no one was watching. From what I understand there were at least three adults and one kid standing around, able to see him. It would go against the grain and 'logic' of a psycho to do such a thing so blatantly, in full view of the dog's owners, simply because the results of such an action would be so counter-productive to himself and would draw so much attention.

Such complete disregard for the results of one's actions sounds more like complete idiocy than psychopathy, if you see what I mean. So is the guy both a psychopath AND so stupid that he cannot judge the results of his actions? Something doesn't jibe here and I can't get my head around it...

I think this is an important clue to what kind of person Gray is. The act doesn’t make any sense other than being pathological.

Speculating an explanation is projecting normalcy into the vacuum of psychopathy, which, it is said, is a normal response, and illustrated by the way the mind replaces a missing letter in a neon sign.

If you read Cleckley's "Mask of Sanity" it all can make a sick sort of sense - for a psychopath.

As for the larger "why?" Well, I suspect it is a wearing-out action from the General Law. Lord knows, there's quite a bit of that going on everywhere and about everybody is getting hit in the ways that get to them best.

From your post I'm guessing that DMSO must taste pretty darn awful!
Oh yeah, I take it myself and it is NASTY ...but it works :)

Guardian, how accurate is the The Sylva Herald in the description of the events? I understand you saw the beginning and the end of what happened.

It was very accurate. I didn't even know the neighbor who first called the police thought there was a "fight" ...but I checked with her after reading the article and she said that was true. She heard all the screaming, looked out and saw Kirum on his knees on the ground with Gina next to him crying and yelling, and she did tell the dispatcher that she thought there had been "a fight or something"

Did you see the guy with a scared look on his face? Did it look like real fear or was it an act?

Gina did say he looked scared immediately after he hit Pepper, but that might have been because Kirum, Gina and John all yelled at him at once and rushed towards him?

When I saw him he had NO expression on his face at all, NOTHING...but he was almost back to his truck by then. When I told him to stay by his truck, that the police were on their way...he just stared at me, totally blank, didn't say a word. For an instant it felt like he was thinking about attacking me too....he whole reaction was beyond creepy.

The "why?" of what he did has been seriously bugging all of us too. There's just no logical reason for what he did? There's NO WAY Pepper could have "surprised" him 'cause she was barking nonstop right there where everyone could see her, and if her constant yapping was getting on his nerves so bad that he just lost it, went off his nut and hit her...there should have been some show of emotion, anger, etc.?

None of us have any history with this guy at all...didn't even know his name, and even with all the outages we've always had a good relationship with the other phone techs that have come out here. We've never even had a minor complaint about any Frontier (formerly Verizon) Service Tech?

The Raricks just moved in, so no one knew them either, and they have no prior history with anyone in the area. It just does not make sense!

I think it's fairly common for a company to drug test and employee after an incident like this so maybe we'll eventually find out if Frontier had the Gray drug tested after the attack?

Yeah, that's been bugging me too...he could have missed Nick walking up behind him, but John met him on the walk and spoke to him face to face and Gina walked right in front of him with her little boy on the way to her car?

Yeah I do, but I also know that pathology is sometimes IMPOSSIBLE for me to understand. I just can't wrap my mind around what some people do? There's also the fact that if not for the Internet, Gray probably would have gotten away with what he did...scott free.

I really do not understand "WHY" Gray did what he did, and I'm not sure I ever will?

I'm wondering if he just underestimated the strength of animal lovers on the Net?

His Internet footprint was almost ZERO before now, he doesn't appear to have any experience in the Cyberverse...perhaps he didn't have a clue what the actual repercussions of his actions would be?

He might have thought his bosses would totally buy his "the dog started me and nipped at me" story...maybe even get him the weekend off? From his perspective, the Raricks might have seemed like just a couple of poor folks living in a remote cabin in the Appalachia...great targets for abuse. What can they do?

 SURPRISE!

Actually, that's definitely something to be thankful for, isn't it? I think it's time to listen to you guys, to put my mind at rest and be properly grateful that I can't figure this one out.

However, if Laura is OK with it, I would still like to propose in the 'Questions For the Cs' thread that this question be asked in a future session: why did Joshua Gray do this?

I also wish you and Pepper the best, Guardian. I know that both Pepper and her owners would have found the going much harder and would feel less safe if you weren't there with them...

Yeah, for me, it makes sense why it doesn't make sense...and it's not gonna. I can make sense of ANYTHING that is kin to me (if I want to take the time to do it) Beings who do these horrible things are not kin to me, so I can't possibly understand them.

Yup...and it worked, real good.

THANK YOU! :hug2:

Having used this product for bruised ribs, it really does work. Had a homeopath tell me that you can take them every 15 mins during trauma for about an hour and then every hour first 24 hrs and then 3 times a day. I might still have contact info if you would like to consult him. He is a true master at homeopathy and is in NYC. You may not want to follow the prescribed dose due to Peppers small size. Though homeopathy is in such minute doses that it really works on a subtle level and maybe one small pill will work.

After taking only three doses, the bruised ribs started to feel better. Had suffered three weeks with them before taking arnica. Also had a fever once that antibiotics would not combat after three days of illness, went to above homeopath and he prescribed two separate homeopathic remedies to take alternating every 15 mins. Within an hour the fever broke.

Usually one would put the pill under one's tongue and allow it to dissolve and not having any foods 15 mins before or after. Hope this will help.

We've already got Pepper's ideal dose for her size, but I'm gonna keep this in mind for myself ...thanks :-)

How is Pepper and her family doing, Guardian?

No real change...I think they've kinda accepted that Pepper has permanent brain damage. She can only walk in a circle. :(

She doesn't seem to be badly affected mentally, she recognizes her family, pays attention to what's going on etc...it's her motor skills that are shot. She's basically a lap puppy now.

The family is still having some serious problems, especially the little boy. He gets VERY upset whenever a stranger comes up...he grabs the dog and runs with her to hide. He went into a panic when the UPS guy came up here and just used their driveway to turn around

I wish I had a happy ending to tell, but there isn't one...just a family trying to cope with a horrible thing.
