Is gender a social construct?

Seems to me that no one is going to stop such an apparently natural and cyclical 'natural process' from taking its course as it has always done. I'd like to think it could be done, but I don't think it's a good idea for anyone to hang their hopes on that or wear themselves out in doing so or joining some ideological 'cause' that claims to set the world to rights.

For sure I think we should do our best to point out the coming storm to anyone open to listening and encourage them to think about the part that we all play - which might help to reduce the level of godawfulness somewhat - but highlighting one of the ills of a body ravaged by cancer for example, and seeking to correct that one ill or symptom, is unlikely to stop the overall process of the death of the body if that is were it seems to be going.

Fun times! Not!

Anyway, I think these kinds of videos have merit for the general public as long as they explain the situation as it really seems to be, i.e. part of a natural process that no one can really stop, but that each person SHOULD act in whatever way is appropriate for them and to the extent they are able to NOT contribute to the decline (why would you unless you're an idiot... and there seems to be a lot of those around!).

I was thinking along similar lines lately, although I think you said it far better.

I mean, consider the 911/Bush/Rumsfeld era. At that time, the biggest threat was "terrorism", imperialism, etc. This was pushed by conservatives, so many people said, "Conservatives are evil!".

Today, we see the "left" being all nutty, and so we tend to say, "Liberals are evil!" And certainly, none of what is happening today on that front just popped up. Of course, we can consider things like splitting realities and other woo-woo, but for simplicity's sake and since we live in 3d, let's just forget about that for now.

This means the "left" were being nutty all along: the groundwork was being laid for what is happening today. And today, we risk falling into the trap of, "everything is the SJW liberal left's fault!" Except we already know that's not true, because both sides are corrupt and there is plenty of history and content on SOTT to show this.

The same is true of the gender / men vs. women thing, as Joe said. No Equality -> Equality -> Feminism -> Man-bashing -> Woman-bashing -> I'm gonna take my toys and go home, and to hell with everybody!

Meanwhile, based on last night's Behind the Headlines, there is a LOT of other stuff going on in the world that requires our attention...

Plus, the danger of falling into this, "It's all THEIR fault! No, it's THOSE people!" is that this same type of polarized thinking will bleed over into our personal lives. It tends to color everything we think. This can have potentially disastrous consequences, even if we aren't actively involved in any current worldly conflicts (real or social), and are just observing and commenting from the sidelines.

We LIKE black and white. Black and white means yay! I'm in control of something! Well, no...

In short, it's very difficult - if not impossible - to navigate the turmoil without getting caught up in the middle of it. All the ills of the world weren't created by just the left, or just the right, or just the feminists, or just the misogynists, or just anybody else. It's a giant Storm of Insanity. That's what chaos before the "collapse of society" looks like, I guess.

At any given time, one side may be "less evil" than another, but that doesn't mean one should support the less evil side 100% come hell or high water no matter what.

Falling into this kind of thinking is not only divisive itself, but it prevents us from saying what needs to be said in an effort to get our (hopefully) more reasoned and balanced perspective out there. And then we let the chips fall where they may.

Put another way, 10 years ago, all you had to do to drive down the highway was avoid the deer. Today, there are deer, oil slicks, potholes, sinkholes, hordes of other crazy drivers, and even some fireballs raining down and blasting holes in both the road and vehicles themselves. If all we do is focus on only the oil slicks or only the deer still, well, we ain't gonna make it very far.

The whole situation looks pretty bleak for sure. The forces at work do seem to be unstoppable, kind of like the forces that seem to define the ups and downs or cycles of human history, which also seem to be pretty consistent throughout the ages in terms of the 'boom and bust' dynamic.

When seen from that perspective, we can see how certain individuals or groups in positions of power help the process along, even engaging in pretty devious maneuvers that seem to push the global situation to its, apparently predestined and messy end. But there doesn't seem to be any 'earthly' architect of the 'grand plan'. There are simply enablers at the human level who seem to play their part pretty well in what seems to be a natural program of the 'living system' that is given a sadistic twist by some interventionist(s).

Is the human element conscious of the part they play? Probably not for most of them, they seem to be just following a pre-programmed 'script', the real end result of which they mostly unaware. The same seems to go for a large section of humanity who apparently are completely unable to do anything about the part they play in this cyclical drama.

Anyway, about women and how if they're not kept in traditional roles things go all pear shaped. That seems to be at least one data point or symptom in the 'fall of civilizations', but so is men in their traditionally meant-to-be-responsible positions of power being complete psycho asshats.

Joe,

I can tell you this, and it might be localized, but the kids I listen to and hear from (who are very overblown with media), can see through it, even if they don't understand the nuances. It's more visceral to them, and it's encouraging.

Almost *every* one of the kids knows there's bullshit going on. *None* of them are affected by this Gender new reality. *None*. They see it as nothing more than you or me being 'identified' as a "Metal head", a "Punk", "New wave", "Mod", or what have you in the 80's.

It's a phase.

It will pass. Like all other fake social constructs.

Yes, and as everyone grows more dissatisfied and hysterized, everyone easily gets caught in the victim-perpetrator duality, although without a qualified, objective, unbiased judge who may bring order into the situation. And that always has disastrous consequences.

Yesterday me and coworkers had a conversation about living conditions in the West and Russia, and someone mentioned how some Russians (who never lived abroad) were dissatisfied with the life in Russia and wanted to leave, while in reality it isn't black and white, and there are poor people everywhere, even in the "wealthy" Germany. And then another coworker shared that she has a gay friend, who left Russia ("because gays are being treated badly here") and moved to Germany. Now, she says, he doesn't work and lives off the generous unemployment benefits, and is very happy spending his time in the gay theme and gay parades.

Well, surely every person is different, and there are many "straight" people who also moved to Germany and enjoy the unemployment benefits without needing to work. But it just made me think about what Theryn Meyer said, and how forcing gender laws on people will just make them angry toward this community. That some may take issue with individuals who complain about bad treatment, and then move to another country and become sort of parasites there.

Funny thing is, that hadn't even occurred to me: How does one explain 50 Shades of Grey and at the same time, the "equality for all, down with the evil white patriarchy!" thing?

I think that men and women are potentially very complementary. Men and women, generally do exhibit different traits and skills. Therefore in a proper context where there is a proper love and understanding, they can learn a lot from each other. In this sense 'gender' or 'sex' is the duality of all duality through which people can define their individuality and more importantly better it.

This being said years of post-modernism have muddied the waters, transformed complementarity into oppositions and led to a growing number of men who are caricatures of women (emulating the worse traits of women) and women who are caricatures of men (emulating the worst traits of men). A coming generation of emasculated men and 'defimininated' women.

Despite the blurring of the sex roles and attributes, many men and women still have a strong instinctual drive for their archetypal complementary half. Men still crave need feminine energy and women still crave masculine energy.

In a world dominated by appearance over substance, matter over spirit, lies over truth, caricatures and substitutes reign supreme, hence the amazing success of '50 shades of grey' which is one among many other examples, where women/men embrace a caricatural substitute of the opposite energy in overcompensation for the lack of real masculinity/femininity in our modern world

Good points. I've just watched a short video of Peterson touching on this subject – more precisely, on women's archetypal fantasies, and his take is on the same line. Basically, 50 shades of Grey and other current popular novels designed for a female audience are just really gross and twisted caricatures of archetypal stories like Beauty and the Beast, where a wild/bad guy is tamed and redeemed by a pure-hearted princess/virgin. So even if it's twisted, it points to an ever-present craving for masculine energy (same for men craving for feminine energy, a need which has been twisted and degraded by pornography). I have colleagues who are fans of 50 Shades of Grey (they've read the book, have seen the movie), and they are not what you would call hysterical feminists: they're middle-aged married women with children. So, there's something to it, I think.
The best part: at the end of the video, he gives 5 categories of the most desirable male entities in current female 'pornography' books, and it's really hilarious (he himself couldn't help laughing, neither could his audience)

An interesting collection of the stuff going on at Evergreen. Not specifically to do with Social Construction of Gender, but the same crazy liberal antics:

That was one of the most ridiculous things I've seen in a long time. Gotta say I enjoyed the youtube comments this time.

Going back to the Evergreen situation, I have to agree that this incident was utterly ridiculous- the inmates are truly running the asylum. Unfortunately you sow what you reap, and the admins and faculty members only have themselves to blame. You only have to have a look at the courses they offer, and their marking criteria to understand what's going on.

The Course Catalogue at Evergreen State College Is Bonkers

Students at Evergreen State College are currently masterminding their own lesson in political unrest. In case you missed it, a student mob attacked and berated a professor, beginning a downward spiral that has left the school shuttered and security so tenuous that there are roving bands of bat-wielding vigilantes keeping the peace on campus.

Professor Bret Weinstein, who kicked off the descent into madness by objecting to a plan that would have booted white students and professors off campus for a “Day of Absence” organized by the school’s minority community, alluded to Evergreen’s insular atmosphere in his interview with Joe Rogan. But to truly grasp how, well, insane, Evergreen State College actually is, you have to go to the course catalogue.

For starters, students at ESC don’t receive grades—they receive “narrative evaluations” that give them feedback on their performance while preserving their self-esteem. Such an approach, Evergreen says, allows professors to take stock of student performance as a whole and take students’ skills and abilities into consideration when awarding the pass and fail. (Students, by the way, also get a say in the process.)

Students also take only a single set of classes each year. There are no semesters (that’s probably sexist anyway), and students plan their own path to their chosen major.

This coming fall, for example, you can take a number of classes that count as biology, but actually aren’t biology at all. They include, as the Daily Caller found, Reproduction: Gender, Race and Power, but also Dancing Molecules, Dancing Bodies, where you’ll use the art of dance to communicate with your body and understand the chemical processes within.

If that’s not up your alley, perhaps you would prefer Actions and their Consequences, which will “examine local, national, and international policy issues of the postcolonial and neocolonial world in education, health care, social welfare and environmentalism” through a series of “interdisciplinary” lectures. That class will eventually gather and design “projects to address issues of unequal distributions of power.”

If math and economics are more your style, there are plenty of social justice-tinged options for you. Advocating for Sustainable Culture is considered a math course (you even get to do field trips!), as is Dimensions for Inequality and Options for Change.

And lest you think you’d have to abandon your progressive politics for a class in something seemingly objective, like physics, fear not! Under the “physics” catalog offerings, there’s Defending Mother Earth: Science, Energy and Native Peoples.

And if these are the hard science offerings, you can imagine what the social science offerings look like. Don’t even ask about the economics department.

The school’s website touts Evergreen as a “special” place, and its not hard to see that they work long and hard to make that true—at least up until the moment when the school descended into madness, ended up in the hands of the students, was forced to shut its doors and became a national news story for its incredible intolerance.

And here is how students are graded at Evergreen (no rank, no grade, simply a Narrative Evaluation so that feelings aren't hurt). Sheesh- it hurts me just reading this nonsense!!

Narrative Evaluations
Narrative evaluations help you make sense of what you’ve learned. Your faculty will give you more than just a single letter grade. Narrative evaluations express the thinking that went into your work, what you completed, and the reactions of both you and your faculty members to your work. These detailed documents often provide specific examples of achievement or progress.

Each course, program, or contract you take should be evaluated three ways:

Faculty will evaluate your work
You’ll write your own self-evaluation
You also get to evaluate your faculty, in return
Learn more about the evaluation process.

The narrative evaluation is a dialogue. You’ll get more feedback with how well you're doing, so you know where to go next, and what you're prepared for. The level of detail in an evaluation can go far beyond a single letter or number. It can help you improve over the course of your college career and do your best.

Your Voice Matters, Too
Students and faculty are encouraged to meet during Evaluation Week to share what they've written. This is an opportunity for you to talk in person about what will go into your transcript. You also have the opportunity to write your perspective in your self-evaluation. Reflect on why you chose this offering, what you hoped to learn, and what you experienced along the way. These reflections may also feed into your Academic Statement.

Communicating Your Record to Grad Schools and Employers
People who read your transcript will get a full picture of what you did in college and what your work ethic is like. Graduate schools appreciate the level of detail, because it shows the depth of work. Your evaluations can demonstrate how prepared you are for graduate-level study. Evergreen’s Registration and Records office has experience working with graduate schools and employers of all kinds to communicate whether your work meets their requirements. We can provide summary views and supplementary documentation if necessary. Contact the Registration and Records office if you have questions about your transcript.

And just for some fun, do have a look at the courses offered at this college (_http://evergreen.edu/catalog/index?year=1). I can't believe students and parents are PAYING for this crap!!

I remember my last school presentation (and decided it was my last day of school), which I intentionally turned into a circus.

My presentation was such a mockery, the teacher furiously asked me what kind of school this was. Which I answered, Hogwarts (Harry Potter magic school). It didn't help my grade. Though I won over the crowd who where attending, I'm man of the public after all.

It wasn't Hogwarts, it was Hogeschool (college I guess) Commercial Economics.

Moral of the story is, I should have gone to Evergreen. Where everything is a joke, so that I actually could get a diploma.

The following article below basically points out humanity is doomed. Could have placed everything in bold, but that would have made it unreadable. Rise in autism means a rise in all kind of weirdness, meet gender theory. One positive note is, if everyone decides to chop of their reproductive organs in order to become a martian. We will go extinct eventually. Humanity is striving for the intergalactic Darwin Award.

Half of All Children Will Be Autistic by 2025, Warns Senior Research Scientist at MIT
http://www.anh-usa.org/half-of-all-children-will-be-autistic-by-2025-warns-senior-research-scientist-at-mit/

Why? Evidence points to glyphosate toxicity from the overuse of Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide on our food.

For over three decades, Stephanie Seneff, PhD, has researched biology and technology, over the years publishing over 170 scholarly peer-reviewed articles. In recent years she has concentrated on the relationship between nutrition and health, tackling such topics as Alzheimer’s, autism, and cardiovascular diseases, as well as the impact of nutritional deficiencies and environmental toxins on human health.

At a conference last Thursday, in a special panel discussion about GMOs, she took the audience by surprise when she declared, “At today’s rate, by 2025, one in two children will be autistic. She noted that the side effects of autism closely mimic those of glyphosate toxicity, and presented data showing a remarkably consistent correlation between the use of Roundup on crops (and the creation of Roundup-ready GMO crop seeds) with rising rates of autism. Children with autism have biomarkers indicative of excessive glyphosate, including zinc and iron deficiency, low serum sulfate, seizures, and mitochondrial disorder.

A fellow panelist reported that after Dr. Seneff’s presentation, “All of the 70 or so people in attendance were squirming, likely because they now had serious misgivings about serving their kids, or themselves, anything with corn or soy, which are nearly all genetically modified and thus tainted with Roundup and its glyphosate.”

Dr. Seneff noted the ubiquity of glyphosate’s use. Because it is used on corn and soy, all soft drinks and candies sweetened with corn syrup and all chips and cereals that contain soy fillers have small amounts of glyphosate in them, as do our beef and poultry since cattle and chicken are fed GMO corn or soy. Wheat is often sprayed with Roundup just prior to being harvested, which means that all non-organic bread and wheat products would also be sources of glyphosate toxicity. The amount of glyphosate in each product may not be large, but the cumulative effect (especially with as much processed food as Americans eat) could be devastating. A recent study shows that pregnant women living near farms where pesticides are applied have a 60% increased risk of children having an autism spectrum disorder.

Other toxic substances may also be autism-inducing. You may recall our story on the CDC whistleblower who revealed the government’s deliberate concealment of the link between the MMR vaccine (for measles, mumps, and rubella) and a sharply increased risk of autism, particularly in African American boys. Other studies now show a link between children’s exposure to pesticides and autism. Children who live in homes with vinyl floors, which can emit phthalate chemicals, are more likely to have autism. Children whose mothers smoked were also twice as likely to have autism. Research now acknowledges that environmental contaminants such as PCBs, PBDEs, and mercury can alter brain neuron functioning even before a child is born.

This month, the USDA released a study finding that although there were detectable levels of pesticide residue in more than half of food tested by the agency, 99% of samples taken were found to be within levels the government deems safe, and 40% were found to have no detectable trace of pesticides at all. The USDA added, however, that due to “cost concerns,” it did not test for residues of glyphosate. Let’s repeat that: they never tested for the active ingredient in the most widely used herbicide in the world. “Cost concerns”? How absurd—unless they mean it will cost them too much in terms of the special relationship between the USDA and Monsanto. You may recall the revolving door between Monsanto and the federal government, with agency officials becoming high-paying executives—and vice versa! Money, power, prestige: it’s all there. Monsanto and the USDA love to scratch each others’ backs. Clearly this omission was purposeful.

In addition, as we have previously reported, the number of adverse reactions from vaccines can be correlated as well with autism, though Seneff says it doesn’t correlate quite as closely as with Roundup. The same correlations between applications of glyphosate and autism show up in deaths from senility.

Of course, autism is a complex problem with many potential causes. Dr. Seneff’s data, however, is particularly important considering how close the correlation is—and because it is coming from a scientist with impeccable credentials. Earlier this year, she spoke at the Autism One conference and presented many of the same facts; that presentation is available on YouTube.

Monsanto claims that Roundup is harmless to humans. Bacteria, fungi, algae, parasites, and plants use a seven-step metabolic route known as the shikimate pathway for the biosynthesis of aromatic amino acids; glyphosate inhibits this pathway, causing the plant to die, which is why it’s so effective as an herbicide. Monsanto says humans don’t have this shikimate pathway, so it’s perfectly safe.

Dr. Seneff points out, however, that our gut bacteria do have this pathway, and that’s crucial because these bacteria supply our body with crucial amino acids. Roundup thus kills beneficial gut bacteria, allowing pathogens to grow; interferes with the synthesis of amino acids including methionine, which leads to shortages in critical neurotransmitters and folate; chelates (removes) important minerals like iron, cobalt and manganese; and much more.

Even worse, she notes, additional chemicals in Roundup are untested because they’re classified as“inert,” yet according to a 2014 study in BioMed Research International, these chemicals are capable of amplifying the toxic effects of Roundup hundreds of times over.

Glyphosate is present in unusually high quantities in the breast milk of American mothers, at anywhere from 760 to 1,600 times the allowable limits in European drinking water. Urine testing shows Americans have ten times the glyphosate accumulation as Europeans.

“In my view, the situation is almost beyond repair,” Dr. Seneff said after her presentation. “We need to do something drastic.”

According to a Dutch study I found 5 in 8 in the Netherlands has traces of Glyphosate in their body. The Dutch authorities do not test for the presence of this poison on fruit and vegetables.

Having spent the last twenty odd years reading texts that could be considered part of Postmodern theory I have come to the conclusion that there are two types of adventure novels in the world. There are the standard ones that most of us normally encounter in their teenage years when you reach a Y node in the narrative and turn to one page or another depending on your choice and then there are the hard core Postmodern theory texts where every time you reach the end of a page you go right back to the start of that page to try and figure out what the hell is being said.

I think one of the most damaging effects Postmodern theory has had on academia and thought in general is the way that it only focuses on conceptual forms of coercion, and seems to place that from of coercion at the top of the “ills of humanity” league. This form of absolutism functions like a talent drain to any young person who has a desire to improve the world they live in. If all the “smart” people that have come before you have brought into this theory then there must be some validity in it, or that was the way it seems to be when I was studying for my chocolate teapot degree.

Of course a bit of critical thinking or common sense at this stage would help some see the fault in this absolutism, whilst it is hard to deny that structure and from have a normative effect on the subject that does not mean that if we make all representations equal or neutral that reality will also become equal. If we only focus on semantic representation of reality and expend all of our energy to make that representation a perfect place it does not follow that reality will be improved in any way. The map is not the territory.

The aforementioned capacity of postmodern theory to spring broad a person into a state in which they either feel it is impossible or too confusing to be responsible for themselves is worrying in terms of the effect it will have on a person’s ability to form meaningful relationships outside of a business / identity group contexts. I think this is part of the motivation for this gender blender movement that is bubbling over at the moment. If you choose to define yourself as part of a group that is defined by sexual preference or choice the instant effect is to put any form of meaningful collectivism further other of reach.

The success of minority groups in empowering themselves through collective action has in part lead to this current state of affairs as they are some of the small number of groups that have managed to gain improvements be raising awareness of their situation and appealing to the general populace to support them in their drive for improvements/ equality.

It is only reasonable to assume that when Gay rights activists starting to raise awareness about their perceived oppression that some people reacted negatively to the suggestion that people should not be discriminated against because of their sexual preference. As thorny as the subject of sexual preference can be it is a walk in the park compared to trying to convince the population that gender is a social construct. Elements of gender may well be socially constructed but to attempt to deconstruct genders to some form of neutrality in reality (as in outside of semantic representation) can only be a socially corrosive ideal in a species that has clearly defined biological genders.

If one considers the impact that dissociative practices within a church service can have on the critical facilities of the audience and the subsequent state of religious indoctrination that can be created from that dissociative state ( The corruption of reality – John Schumaker) it does not take a huge conceptual jump to see that a similar effect could be happening to impressionable young people today through gender politics and flickering screens. The general sense of gender confusion that modern media is creating is then socially endorsed by those considered “Intelligent” within academia who proclaim that “There are no truths, only interpretations”. So it stands to reason that gender is just a social construct as not only have the deep thinkers of our time have said it is so but an individual’s internal confusion seems to point in that direction as well.

I think some texts that could be considered postmodern have some use in the context of understanding certain elements of the modern world, for example there probably is something of merit in Jean Baudrillard’s Simulacra and Simulation, if you are interested in attempting to learning about semantic representation and power in the modern world. The fact that you will need to learn a virtually new language to understand the text detracts somewhat from the useful application of any information contained within it but that is only a minor problem compared to the issue that no other significant group of people will be able to comprehend what you are talking about. A state of affairs that will be familiar to anybody that has suffered a “tripper” that has discovered the secrets of the universe but is unable to communicate those secrets in a understandable verbal form.

The question of gender and its meaning in today's world seems to be especially relevant with the political ramifications of the C-16 bill, which adds legal protection for “gender identity” and “gender expression” to the Canadian Human Rights Act and the Criminal code. Legislation very similar to Bill C-16 has already been passed in New York City. The biggest problem with these laws, as Jordan Peterson has been tirelessly working to point out, is the suppression and control of free speech that they create.

But political issues notwithstanding, there is still the question of how gender work in society and whether it is a biological creation or a creation of society (or a little of both). There are plenty of arguments to be made on both sides. Some people say that it's a cultural creation of society and that depending on the society, you have a binary choice - male or female - while in other cultures you can have multiple genders. For a long time Western society used biology as the way to identify gender, although that is clearly changing with the SJW crowd now demanding more options and forcing the rest of society to comply. For me, using one's biological sex seems to be the simplest and most common sense way to go about understanding gender, but I am willing to hear others out who disagree. I also think there is a lot of confusion being sowed right now about this subject and it would be good to hear if others are feeling the same way or if they agree or disagree with the current transition in the West to accepting more than male or female as genders. Is gender the representation of biology, or as some argue is one's biological sex independent of gender identity and it's actually one's cultural milieu which determines gender?

This has been a very interesting and informative discussion on the question "of gender" and it's different meanings and ramifications in society.

However, I have some perplexing questions, " Is “gender identity” and “gender expression" as it is now being promoted in our society, actually an out growth or "part of an end game" of "a religious practice" started centuries ago, under the aspects of male and female genital mutilation (circumcision)?

Is the main purpose of genital mutilation/circumcision to neutralize the "the biological identity of our gene pool (Homo Sapiens)" into a transgender "one size fit's all" category - indistinguishable from one another, physically (anatomically and behaviorally)?

Is it possible to assume, that the introduction of vaccination, which alters hormonal and immune system functions, is also "a part of this gender bending process"?

Taking in consideration - that the so-called-elites plan their moves, years and centuries in advance, could the recent acceleration of mandatory vaccination schedules, starting right after birth (hepatitis B vaccine) and elite bureaucrats pressing registration for adult vaccination, along with wide spread genital mutilation/circumcision - "all" be part of the ground work laid - to introduce "gender equality" as a social expression?

Are “gender identity”, “gender expression" and "gender equality" promotions to desensitize and suppress human emotion, a trait lacking in psychopaths?

Are the terms "Male and Female" destined to become "a Divine Right" set aside only for the elites and their nobility, much in line with the distinctions related to writings in the Vedas and the Bhagavad Gita with it's Caste system? With all the overtones permeating our society now with "Muslims and the Muslim Brotherhood" and all the Islamic mosaics being built in high population areas through out our Country, it has been documented that the Muslims and British transformed India into what it is now. Many historian's consider "America" still a British colony, with the IRS as a tool to collect and send our Income Tax directly to the Monarchy, the Queen? Are the questions surfacing now, on "gender and gender identity" in America, a movement leading to a modified Caste system for our society?
