But the other side of the coin is that my breath is awful...I could smell it by myself and some weeks ago my daugther was standing 2 meters away from me when talking to her she said : wow dad you stink! and immediatly remembered that in the very afternoon two of my co-workers offerred me twice some chewing gums...And then I realized why they keep some distance from me when we're talking and even sometimes winced. This situation is quite embarassing as I work with public and very often face to face with my manager at her desk.
So I got some xylitol chewing gum but in the long run it makes me bloat, too much saliva swallowed I guess. Is it that many ketones remain "unburnt" and escape from my lungs and why? Or because I'm a tea guzzler (2 liters/day)?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

You should check your teeth for plaque or tonsilitosis (spelling?) stones and check if the meat is pastured. Also check your flossing technique.

I get bad breath after I eat because it is hard for me to find a local shop that carries pastured meats. The bad breath comes from the bits of meat stuck between teeth (the molars). I rid of it easily by correctly flossing and using a mouthwash called TheraBreath.

Just offering suggestions based on my own experience.

Re: Ketogenic Diet - Path To Transformation?

Don Diego, I would look first to a digestive issue and try taking some meat digesting supplements like betaine etc. Have you done a search on google?

Re: Ketogenic Diet - Path To Transformation?

Another update, two more weeks have passed and after few adjustments my system is now running to its optimum OSIT.

It looks like my body does need some carbs - if I dont have at least 10 grams per day I get diarrhea and awkward feeling in my belly.

I am also taking clay for internal use ( most protocols recommend taking it for 6 weeks) and I think this also helps. Anyhow I haven't had this energy level since I was in my 20-ies. I will continue like this for few more months and then see if I can go to 0 carbs without any consequences.

Actually digestive enzymes are still needed for lots of people on the KD. Digesting fats can be difficult for many people when first starting out the diet or for those with liver or gall bladder issues so enzymes like Betain HCI or ox bile can aid in that effort.

HCL and bile are not technically enzymes, I failed to make that distinction because they are usually added along with "digestive enzyme" supplements. I was meaning Ox bile and HCL (or any acid really such as vinegar or vitamin C). We should probably be more clear on this.
Yes, now I see the difference, and remember that I had some trouble to adapt bone broth. Thanks you both.

It could be something else, for instance a pharyngeal pouch (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zenker%27s_diverticulum) which typically gives bad breath. I'm not saying you have one, but that bad breathe could be due to things that don't necessary give problems or symptoms.

I would try apple cider vinegar in the meat and the advice that people already gave you though to see if it gets better.

This is creeepy! and only curable by a surgical treatment...Will try vinegar first. Thanks Psyche.

Actually it could be a serious possibility as my teeth are awful and I have to pick them out carefully after each meal. It crossed my mind this afternoon after my first post so I did a mouth wash with baking soda and noticed a slight improvement but the strong "flavour" is still here. Thanks Ytain.

No I didn't and certainly will. I'll get some betaine tomorrow and see. Thanks Laura.

Baking soda mouthwash doesn't kill the bacteria, it just absorbs the odour found in the mouth. That's what I did first trying to kill the mouth odour.
Toothpicking is not enough, you need flossing. You could buy a water flosser like Waterpik or similar.
TheraBreath kills the bacteria and it has xylitol in it and other appropiate ingredients (no flouride, no SLS, no alcohol).

If you have dental problems, that can certainly do it. I would get myself to a dentist post haste!

Thanks Megan, I'm currently reading on the wiki page for SIBO, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth but all the symptoms really don't match! I have to dig a bit more elsewhere on that.
Am I alone with this issue?

That's good -- you have ruled something out. You are not alone. I have had the problem so long that I have kind of given up on it. Since I discovered it when I was eating vegan (I don't know when it actually started), I thought perhaps that the KD would fix it but it didn't. Psyche's link may very well point to what causes mine -- I do have certain minor swallowing issues in addition to halitosis. I have adapted to it over time and, at the moment, I can't even think of the circumstances where I have to be careful with swallowing -- avoiding the problem has become automatic -- but under the wrong circumstances swallowing can be painful and the pain is right where it would be for this condition.

The article didn't mention it, but I had back surgery a year or so before I noticed the perpetual halitosis, and I remember, when I came to, my throat being quite sore from a tube they had stuck down it while I was out. Can that cause this?

Even though increasing carbs may help, it does not follow that reduced carbs are the cause of the problem and that increased carbs are the "cure." This issue has been turning up since near the beginning of the LWB thread.

I ran into the problem myself around July of 2011, and carb amounts were neither cause nor cure. It just took me a long time to adapt to very low levels, and I also eventually had to tweak my diet as described recently in this (KD) topic and in the fermented foods topic. I am very glad now that I worked it out -- this is the best I have felt in years. Increasing carbs using starch, though recommended by certain paleo authors, was a long digression that did not help, although it seemed to at times.

By the way, my starch of preference was sweet potato, which is high in fructose. Not really a good idea, in retrospect.

Re: Ketogenic Diet - Path To Transformation?

I was thinking on the same lines Megan , but we will see how it goes.
I avoid starchy roots like a plague they make me sluggish, so far I am using leafy vegetables and occasional fruit every odd day.

Fruit is deadly in any amounts.

I didn't knew the content of the wikipedia page, I just linked it having it in mind that is a cause of bad breathe and that it often doesn't give problems. Didn't meant to scare anyone ;)

But thinking of bad breathe makes me think of indigestion issues. People with sluggish livers too.

I don't necessarily think the surgery or the tube might cause pouches like these ones, but perhaps nicklebleu will know better.

Post nasal drip from the sinuses down the back of the throat can also cause bad breath.

I asked a dentist what caused 'acetone breath' once, and she said in many cases it was from not flossing the teeth enough. She advised flossing teeth before breakfast, after every meal, and before bedtime. Since I've done that, I've never had a problem with bad breath, unless my sinuses are irritated. :flowers:

Thanks. I wasn't focused when I wrote that yesterday and I realized a few hours later that it was a breathing tube that caused the problems, and that what I have to be most careful about is simply blowing my nose. I do have to be careful with my throat with certain things, such as swallowing pills and not choking on phlegm -- which I had in abundance after meals before going paleo -- but the main issues (including vision problems and and a deviated septum) are congenital, not something that developed more recently. I believe Dr. Cate writes about about those things in Deep Nutrition, in the 'phi' part of the book.

One thing I do know is the frustration of having halitosis for no apparent reason, and I have suspected for a long time that it might be coming from near the top of my throat: I can taste it.

Check this out: http://www.wisegeek.com/what-causes-sinus-drainage.htm

It's an article discussing the problems and treatments for sinus drainage.

Re: Ketogenic Diet - Path To Transformation?

Question is: is the "bad breath" an acetone thing or something else? You need to describe the smell and you can only do that by getting someone else to describe it to you. That might help in tracking down the cause.
