Ketogenic Diet - Powerful Dietary Strategy for Certain Conditions

Re: Ketogenic Diet - Path To Transformation?

Eating bananas will knock you out from ketosis and if you can't satisfy your appetite with ketogenic diet (20/80% protein to fat ratio of total energy), there's propably something wrong with your diet. Maybe you could try avocados instead of bananas? Financially this diet is going take your budget down, because you don't have to eat all the time and meat is cheaper that veggies. I usually eat two times in a day and feel totally satisfied.

Eating bone broth and liver is good way to get proper nutrition and maybe supplementing magnesium and potassium once in a while. There's lots of good discussion in this thread and life without bread thread, you could check them also :)

I stooped eating fruits for almost two days know and can say that in a way satisfied. Think it has to do with these fruits and cravings they produce while not satisfying your appetite in a meantime. About prices I think it depends from country to country. Thanks for your advice. :)

Re: Ketogenic Diet - Path To Transformation?

If you can get, step by step, to the point that 75% to 80% of your daily calories come from animal fat, it WILL be the cheapest way to eat -- AND the healthiest. You will end up eating a whole lot less (and throwing out less food that goes bad when eating "the wide varieties" people not on KD love so much -- including fruits). And you'll never be hungry, when in permanent deep nutritional ketosis.

Where I live, there's really no factory farms and the meats are of the highest quality. Free grazing, happy animals. Animal fat and organ meats are the cheapest by kilogram, so eating the healthiest is also THE cheapest way to eat by a very wide margin. But all the advantages of living where all the animals feed on wild grasses is VERY rare these days. Yet all the other advantages for health AND budget should apply to just about anywhere when you settle on the best sources possible from which to buy your meat.

Yes, I can see difference already related to throwing less and eating lot less, and I do not feel hungry even after eating smaller amounts of meat. I thought that if I dump fruits I would need to eat more meat but it is not so. When you look at it, eating normal diet would take some 4 meals a day, and when it comes to Ketogenic diet that is cut to half, having in mind that you eat less in that two meals, then it is really cheaper. It is quite revolutionary and very useful when it comes to survival. I did not went step by step because do not have problems changing habits when I really want, but when I do not want to do something then I do not even bother, two edge extremities sword in a way.

Re: Ketogenic Diet - Path To Transformation?

Hello everyone,

I started doing the ketogenic diet early this year, after a a 3 week bout of illness and a very nasty flu right after Christmas. I have a few observations as well as questions for the group and yes, I did read through the whole topic, all 146 or so wonderful and informative pages.

Although I started my ketogenic experiment at the beginning of January I was quite sick during the time. This was likely a foolish decision that aggravated my sickness. I have never before been 3 weeks sick, and I can report that I felt many of the same annoyances that others have posted here, particularly pain in the legs.

Nevertheless this passed and with the arrival of my organ meats and bones (from grassfed cows of course) I began to feel great. Bone Broth truly did make all the differences, giving my strength and unbelievable working endurance. I could just go on forever at whatever I'm doing be it work or play. I would get up right away, no fatigue. My productivity shot up.

There have been a few hiccups recently though. On several occasions in the last 3 weeks I have slipped out of ketosis by a wide margin (due to my own foolishness and gluttony). The results have been very, very ugly. Whenever I had more than 200 hundred grams of carbohydrates my stomach would become extremely irritated and bloated. My intestines would constantly rumble. I would have long lasting diarrhea (it has made for some difficult work shifts!), an urge to puke, and made me burp out a stange smelling gas.

Notably this only ever occurs when I slip out of ketosis and have been out of bone broth. When I simply slip out of ketosis but have broth, I have very uncomfortable bowel movements, but nothing like this.

I am unsure of what it is exactly, but I have decided to just stay ketogenic and postpone further experimentation. Ketosis has given me a clearer head, a stronger and more durable body, and a consistently level mood. Playing with carbs again muddles my mind, causes pain to my body, and makes me unproductive.

If anyone knows what that is, feel free to tell me though so I have a better grip on what I'm dealing with as opposed to simply concluding Ketosis=good all carbs=bad. It might be true, but I'd much rather know WHY it is true if that is the case.

Do all quantities of alcohol kick one out of ketosis?

From what i know, alcohol puts a delay on burning fat (in the liver) as it uses up the alcohol, which defeats the purpose. Others might have a different take on this.

I think this is the case as well. Alcohol is preferentially burned for fuel. That said, as far as I know alcohol is not like carbohydrates in bulk in that it reverses the process. When all the alcohol has been absorbed, your body should sink back into ketosis quickly and easily.

Alcohols tend to have a lot of other sugars though, so this isn't necessarily a bullet dodged. Could you slip some red wine or vodka into a ketogenic diet and remain in ketosis most of the time? Probably. Is it a good idea? I don't think so. You'd be shooting yourself in the foot by slipping out of it now and again.

Re: Ketogenic Diet - Path To Transformation?

Hello everyone! It was a long time since I did not update on my progress on the diet. The reason being that I have not done much. I fell off the wagon many times. The year 2011 was a descent into a self-destructive hell in which I applied to deny all that I have learned in chaining parties where alcohol flowed freely, if not drugs. 2012 was the year of remission, I stayed away from my old "friends", I found a real job, I moved with my partner, and I applied myself to become a good obyvatel without paying attention to the sirens of the past.

However, too often I let myself be tempted by this little piece of bread with butter or pâté, not to mention the delicious cakes that my father prepares to each of my visits to my hometown. I thought, "Hey, at least I'm not doing drugs." Things have changed this year. The remedy? A piece of paper in my pocket, on which I wrote "APPLY KNOWLEDGE! ". This paper became my God, and things have finally taken a positive turn.

It's been about 3 weeks so my diet consists in this:

Morning: pork belly, smoked or not, with scrambled eggs and a bowl of bone broth in which I add butter and lard. I did the test with a little heavy cream, it seems that it does not give good results.

Noon: a big pork chop around 250-300 grams, with a bit of bone broth that I carry to work in a thermos. I am fortunate to have at my disposal at work a fully equipped kitchen where I can prepare my meals.

Evening: a small piece of meat or sausage, or pork belly, less than 100 grams, and of course bone broth.

I had tried to start the fat-burning engine in 2012, but I quickly succumbed to the keto-adaptation, which made me fall for sugar. This time, I finally took the time to lift weights as shown in this thread, it was really the trigger. Everything is set in motion as soon as my body was confronted with this stark choice: starve or use fat. He made the right choice and everything seems to fall into place.

At the positive changes I am finally free of my eczema outbreaks. And like many other forum members have mentioned, I feel more alert, and more globally, in better shape.

However, there were days when I did not digesting well: acid reflux, constipation followed by diarrhea, and each of those days gave me a terrible mood. Digestive enzymes helps a lot regarding to these issues. And since a week I am assailed by many obsessive thoughts, and music loops that repeat in my head to infinity, the famous "earworms." A search on the forum helped me establish a link between serotonin levels, healthy GI tract and OCD. The good news is that the ketogenic diet is exactly what it should do when suffering from such disorders. However, I struggle to understand why these problems were exacerbated after the 3rd week of diet. Do I need to be patient and wait for my serotonin levels return to normal, or is there something I can do to help my body to balance its hormone levels ?

Re: Ketogenic Diet - Path To Transformation?

Checking in to say things are quite stable.

I was given 4 large bags of pork fat that my brother's wife had cut off of their meat when the butcher cut it up. I couldn't believe my luck! She was glad to get rid of it! Funny how that works!!! It was farm raised pork and the fat seems to be of good quality.

I agree about the KD diet saving money when it comes to food.
Now my biggest budget destroyer is my vehicle(gasoline).

When pondering life without a vehicle in Manitoba, I marveled at the way my forefathers took on the basics of survival in harsh conditions. Even though these fathers & mothers came from Lapland, it has only taken a few generations to loose/forget these skills.

My Grandfather always said "Wear a layer of wool next to your skin and you will be just fine." or "It's time for the woolen long underwear." He also had a bear skin coat for those open wagon rides in 40 below. He said that was the warmest coat he had ever used.

Hi Tomek,

Thank you for sharing, good to hear that you're making progress! If these ''earworms'' that you speak of are connected to the GI tract, it may be so that once your GI tract etc. starts to heal more and more (as you may know, it takes about 6 months before your body is cleared up of gluten) those symptoms may go away. I also read that some people found that taking good quality fish oil supplements helped them against obsessive thoughts. Another suggestion that could help with the obsessive thoughts and music loops is to listen to the POTS every day if you can, especially before sleep. Hope this helps!

These new findings are allowing me to understand a few reasons as to why I have not developed any significant health issues throughout my life, osit. The skipping of meals on a daily basis along with the periodic true "fasting", if the recent information posted is correct, allowed the body to enter survival mode, cleansing out a lot of the garbage in the body, and using what it did have more efficiently. It explains, in my case, why I never gained a lot of weight, even when I was eating a higher proportion of carbs than fat.

One of the other things that dawned on me was the fact that our paleo ancestors did not eat by a clock the way modern society does. This to me would mean that upon waking at sunrise each morning, once the need to eat arose, it may have taken them hours to hunt down a meal, which being conservative, would put their main meal around what we consider "brunch", or between breakfast and lunch. Due to them being in ketosis, and without modern knowledge of food preservation, they would eat primarily right after the acquisition of the hunt, then maybe a bit of what was leftover- if any- a little later. Due to the ketogenic state, if it were say 16-20 hours between meals, the body would have been in starvation mode, which put cell repair and energy efficiency as the mode of operation.

Obviously this is only my opinion after reading the new information, but it seems the most logical to me. I also wonder if the body being in this mode on a regular basis not only prevented diseases as we know them today, but could be a contributing factor to the much higher bone density of our paleo ancestors than what modern humans have. Definitely looking forward to the more technical papers to be released soon, as hopefully they will shed more light on this subject.

Thanks Laura & team!

Hello, QuantumLogic,

What you describe has been my normal eating pattern for years and I have had no major health issues either and I am very slim and fit.

I have not gotten through this very long and intensive thread yet, so I may not have gotten to further discussion on this, but I wanted to ask if you or anyone has any thoughts about whether the pattern of eating you describe would be beneficial even if it was not Paleo. I have not been eating Paleo but I'm about to begin and again, I've been eating almost identically to the pattern discussed for most of my life and other than some brain fog (not ideal, I know), it's worked for my body, at least.

It sure seems to throw out the graze throughout the day argument.

Thanks!

:)

Re: Ketogenic Diet - Path To Transformation?

I'm wondering if I should eat my bone broth. When I first made it it was cooked four 3-4 hours in a pressure cooker, like usual. I put it in jars, and it was still too hot after two hours. Then I forgot about it and put in the refrigerator in the evening, so it was about 6 hours out in room temperature. The cans were probably cooler than my skin at that point.

So I decided to reboil them last night. I heard 10 minutes of full boil will kill a good portion of bacteria. I actually forgot again about them (swamp post coming), but this time they were out for 4 hrs. 45 minutes.

I'm just worried about the bacteria aspect, especially botulism. It looks like the agreed upon temperatures for food are under 40-42 degrees F, and over 135-140 degrees F. And you shouldn't let it sit out under 135-140 for more than two hours.

Any thoughts? What's the longest you've left out your broth? Thanks.

I do very large batches, filter it into bottles and let them stand overnight to cool covered with paper towel. Then I freeze them and thaw as used. Works great everytime. :)

So you don't have much to worry about unless you let them sit in the fridge too long.

Re: Ketogenic Diet - Path To Transformation?

3d Student, I'd say it's good for canning, considering the (probably) little amount of meat protected by the fatty film of the broth. The longest I've forgotten broth outside the fridge was a couple of weeks, although I didn't eat it, it had no smell to it or signs of decomposition despite having stood in the window with sun on it in the daytime. I've forgotten badly sealed broth glasses in the canner overnight, boiled them again and stored them away- haven't tested them though. Would be interested to know it that's careless, although I dont think it is.

That seems smart. I make about 5 L of broth a batch and just keep it refrigerated. If I don't eat it fast enough it tends to spoil. How do you thaw the bottles for hot soup in the morning?

Another question. The 25g limit for protein per meal that translates to 3.5oz of meat. Should the meat be cooked before or after the measurement?
