Has anyone else noticed better tolerance to cold weather since starting KD/bone broth? Our weather took a sudden turn last week, with highs around 55F (13C) and down in the 30'sF (near 0C) at night. To my own surprise, I found myself quite comfortable in a short sleeved shirt, while everyone else was bundled up in jackets and sweatshirts. The benefits of this high fat diet are simply amazing! :cool2:

I am also finding myself stood at the bus stop in shorts and t shirt, surrounded by people in heavy warm jackets. I still feel the cold, but it doesn't seem to bother me as much. We'd better get used to it anyway.
While not yet down to shorts and just a t shirt outside - trousers and a lightweight insulation/windproof layer on top of t shirt - that is a lot less clothing than I was wearing this time last year (heavy jacket too), and no heating on in the house either, and still with a summer duvet, as opposed to both summer and winter duvet, and additional blankets on the bed, and still feeling the cold. This year, I can feel the warmth exuding from me almost as soon as I'm in bed. Truly amazing change, due to KT diet and cold adapting.

Same here. I don't feel the need to turn the heating on at night anymore after going on the Ketogenic diet. Looks like the slight extra fat I gained from the diet (I'm a skinny one) is already showing its effects after just over a month, though the paleo diet prior to it may have contributed as well.

Yeah, we didn't have the heating on in the house and i barely gave it a though. Also cold showers has been easier as i sometimes take them at the end of shower.

And the same here, no heating in the house, no more than the light blanket used during summer and we have 17°C at night and almost 19°C during the day. But and because our home is pretty wet, I have to sleep with a pajamas than I did not use until last week.
Cold showers help even if I am not able to take them entirely cold all along always yet (as I did during the Summer), due to the cold wet in the bathroom too. Let's go on, I did not say my last word...

Re: Ketogenic Diet - Path To Transformation?

I have been sleeping in a van 360 days a year starting 6 or 7 years ago. I never use heating. So basically, during winter, it is the same temperature inside or outside the van. I have several different sleeping bags that I use depending on the temperature. During the inter-season, like now, it is difficult to choose for one bag or another. Also, I like to let the door open when it is not too cold or too wet outside.

Few days ago I was too much hot during the night (I will not talk here of the "dream" and possible 4D STS interaction that night that seems do be related to the heat). I wake up, change for a lower sleeping bag. Then I wake up again and I had a little cold. The interresting thing is that this little cold disapeared during the night.

After that night, I have tried to avoid too much heat at night, and I have had that little cold at several times.

Not really, but then I was always cold-proof despite being skinny. I seem to be one of those "Mr. Fusion" types: Food in, heat out.

I have found that taking cold showers has jacked up my tolerance to cold even more, though.

Then again, I'm pretty darn sure that with fat as my primary fuel, it certainly isn't hurting things in the heat-generation department!

Bring on the next ice age!

Re: Ketogenic Diet - Path To Transformation?

Having been very sensitive to cold for as far as I can remember, I noticed that since I became adapted to ketosis my tolerance to heat decreased massively. I even got nausea several times due to over heating, something I posted earlier. Two nights ago I thought, it has been really cold today, so let me put on an extra layer to prevent being cold during the night, something I would have done prior to this diet. Well, I woke up in the middle of the night feeling overheated and nauseous, had to undress everything and lie on the floor to cool down. That did the trick and I could go back to bed feeling better, wearing with less clothing.
Before I would even seat on a radiator during winter, now that is unthinkable. All in all, more then tolerance to cold I noticed less tolerance to heat.

I was also doing cold showers with positive results in respect to cold tolerance and improved digestion, but since having had a throat and ear infection for two months I have to be very careful with the slightest hint of feeling too cold, or feeling it for too long, as I'll immediately feel throat and ear pain. So right now I am wearing the same amount of clothes I would have worn prior to the diet to keep myself warm, almost hot, and this prevents a flare up. The difference is, though, that rather then feeling ok with this amount of clothing, I feel warmer than before.

I noticed that doing cold showers was super easy despite that I don't have the house heated and it was 8 degrees outside. At this point, I know I'll tolerate the cold weather :)

Regarding added tbsn of fat, which blends best, in terms of flavor, with strictly beef bone broth (this time at least)?? I am just beginning the transition into this diet. I know coconut oil is out.

I use butter, FWIW.

Hello AWTF. There's a long article and a recipe here on sott: http://www.sott.net/articles/show/232028-Traditional-Bone-Broth-in-Modern-Health-and-Disease

Which I followed but thought that perhaps it was too much vinegar? (I used apple cider vinegar)

Also, Laura posted that you could use part ox tail and part marrow bone, which was the method I used. I also browned the bones before adding water. It was a very rich broth with much gelatin.

Slow simmer overnight worked well for me.

On another note ... I did a small experiment.

I recently bought a glucometer which is able to measure ketones (beta-hydroxybutyrate) in the blood. I did a few measurements while eating the reduced protein amount, followed by intermittent fasting and then eating a huge protein load. Here are the results:

Hi nicklebleu, do you drink black tea? If so, let us know if your ketones in blood fluctuate a lot when you drink black tea.

According to one experiment, caffeinated beverages were discouraged because they found that coffee took a person out of ketosis. But this was coffee and as far as I understand they didn't try it with other caffeinated beverages which is quite another cup of tea. Coffee does raise blood sugar a lot. But black tea with butter is a marvelous thing!

Re: Ketogenic Diet - Path To Transformation?

Just had a little experiment with extra thick double cream as a way of adding fat. It is incredibly addictive and I ended up eating the whole 300ml tub without noticing about 1300 calories worth.. My stomach doesn't feel so good right now, and I feel kind of 'dirty', losing my clear-headedness.

I remember reading in LWB that you guys tried it and didn't tolerate it well, but thought I would see how it went since it is so low in casein and is so convenient. Guess I just had to learn the hard way!

I've been saving links when bone broth recipes are mentioned, but don't have the how to for canning:
