‘Grief’ monument to commemorate MH17 victims
June 30, 2016
Victims of the MH17 flight disaster are set to be commemorated in a monument reflecting the sun’s rays to light up their 298 names.
NOS reports (in Dutch) that relatives of victims of the Malaysia Airlines flight shot down in July 2014 have chosen a design by modern sculptor Ronald Westerhuis, from a choice of five proposals.
A steel wall, 6m high and 25m long, will be engraved with the names of the victims, about two-thirds of whom were Dutch. In front will stand a stainless steel sculpture shaped like an eye, which will reflect light onto the wall as the sun’s rays pass.
‘The steel will be a defense,’ the sculptor told NOS. ‘It stands for grief. And memory [the reflected sun] will literally light up the sadness.’
His monument is set to be built in the remembrance wood in Vijfhuizen, North Holland, and was supported by 161 votes (compared to 61 or fewer for other proposed designs).
Esther Visser, from the MH17 air disaster foundation, said they had hoped for a clear favorite when relatives were shown the design on May 21, to make it ‘easier’.
YouTube said:For the tragic crash of the Malaysia airlines plane 'MH17', Ronald A. Westerhuis designed a place to find consolation.
In his presentation for the family members of the victims, Ronald explained he sees monuments as something that overtakes you with respect for the tragedy, even if you never lived it. This is seen in the size of the monument and the insurance of silence because of the echos caused by the curved wall. The symbolism in the design gently brings every aspect of mourning to bid.
As seen in the video, the monument is about grief, miss, memory's, and has the beautiful message of 'lighten grief with one eye to the sky'.
'It's not essential my monument is the chosen one, it's essential there is going to be one', says Ronald.

The Netherlands threatens not to ratify Ukraine treaty
June 29, 2016
Prime minister Mark Rutte has raised the issue of amending the EU’s treaty of association with Ukraine with European officials following the Dutch no vote in April’s referendum.
Rutte is hoping the treaty can be amended to take away objections raised by people who voted against the treaty, broadcaster NOS said (in Dutch). Some 32% of the Dutch population voted in the referendum and 61% said no, meaning the government is forced to take its results into account.
The NOS said Rutte has been given ‘time’ by other European leaders to decide what should be done with the results of the referendum.
‘The problem is that if we don’t sign, the other countries will press ahead and the Netherlands will be left out. But signing, without taking the Dutch no into account will be very tricky,’ he said.
‘We are going to try, but if it does not work, we will not sign,’ Rutte is quoted as saying by the broadcaster.
The Volkskrant says that a confidential report on Tuesday’s meeting shows that Rutte has said he is prepared to sign the deal if Dutch concerns can be taken account of in a legally-binding way.
Dutch PM wants to change EU treaty with Ukraine
Posted on Jun 29, 2016 by Janene Pieters
Prime Minister Mark Rutte wants to change the association agreement between the European Union and the Ukraine in such a way that the concerns of the Dutch who voted against the agreement are alleviated. He is not sure whether this will be possible, but will make every effort to see whether it is, NOS reports.
Dutch voters voted against the Netherlands ratifying the association agreement with the Ukraine in a referendum on April 6th. Other EU countries already ratified the agreement. On Tuesday EU leaders gave Rutte some time to see what to do about the outcome of the referendum.
The results of the agreement is not binding on the Dutch government. But does put the government in a difficult position – it does not want to ignore the voters, but also does not want to stand alone in Europe. “The problem is that if we do not sign, the others countries will continue and the Netherlands will be left out. However, signing without paying attention to the Dutch no is very difficult”, Rutte said, according to the broadcaster.
He fears that any compromise they come up with will leave either the EU or the no-voters unhappy. “We’re going to try”, he said, adding that the Netherlands won’t ratify the agreement if no solution is found. “Again, if it does not succeed we will not sign.”
To an accusation that the government would make the no-vote disappear into a kind of Brussels bureaucracy he responded: “What do you think. I can’t just magic the result of the referendum away.”
The investigation team, dealing with the Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 crash in Ukraine, will visit Moscow.
This is a surprising "twist" to the situation?

This is a surprising "twist" to the situation?
AFAIK, not really no; not as such. This visit has been talked about for months (behind the scenes) and --as these things take time to organize-- they only now announced the specifics around it.
It only would become a surprising twist when they came back with new evidence of a nature that runs counter to what has been published so far and/or was publicly acknowledged up until now.
I'm not holding my breath on that one though -- but one never knows...
We'll have to wait and see, as usual.
