Music Collaboration

Count me in!

My main instrument is singing. I mainly sing classical/opera but I have some success in singing pop- and folkmusic too. Other instruments that I can play fairly well include: piano/keyboards and accordion. I'm pretty good in using the Sibelius notation program and GarageBand for basic mixing.

I've had some ideas to write songs too, but right now my cup is full so that will have to wait. But I'd be happy to try out someones song, giving a voice to it. :)

That would be ACE, Aragorn! I could really see an operatic voice as part of the energy. Now is there anyone out there who could write some lyrics that would be SOTT-related?!!!

To give you all an idea of my current musical trend, here's a short video that I just put up:

I hope it's ok.

Thanks Bidoche, Aragorn. Very good to hear.

The main problem with mail where I live, Bidoche is it's tendency to be very unreliable and take far too long(a friend received his divorce papers from Canada 3 weeks after being sent!).

I suppose DHL is an option but would rather spend that money on making the music collaboration happen.

What I had in mind, as an example is sending a recorded piece with maybe 2 tracks. 1 of guitar and the second of voice. Of course either can be eliminated as more people add to the mix. This would just create a foundation of sorts to build upon. So y'all with song material could do something similar.

So the central hub idea seems key. For our recent recordings we used reverbnation(dot com), which though not perfect is fairly simple and free(ish). I thought of possibly opening an account there which we could all access and add/subtract etc. in our own time. It has the tools to add and mix tracks.

Should I look more into this?

Sounds good to me, cholas! :)

I agree that the best option would be to use some internet 'hub', like this reverbnation to add and listen to tracks. Does it cost something?

Do you know if one can do mastering also at this site? But I guess it's no problem to download the tracks and then use Logic or ProTools.

For recording vocals I use an Edirol portable digital recorder. It's not the best option for sure, but the quality is surprisingly good. We would probably do demo versions first anyway. I have some contacts to local recording studios just in case we decide that we need 'top of the line' equipment for the final product, if my contribution/part is accepted that is.

Ok, I'll get the skinny on reverbnation. I just sent an e to a friend who put our page together on this site. LOTS of options and if it does end up costing something, I'll take care of that end.

Should know more soon.

Though it is possible to buy/sell songs from reverbnation(itunes), imo, a future high-quality CD is a great idea too.

Thanks Aragorn, I'll chat with some friendly, local studios too just in case.

For those interested, we have a central hub site for this project. It can be found here:

Does this look like it will work? I can email or maybe PM the password(moderators is a PM for this ok?).

K, so I have this seven minute improvisation I did on guitar. See what ya'll think of it. :cool2:

Well I'm glad that the issue of recording has been taken care of. Unfortunately, it would take me far too long to understand this kind of setup, so I'm pulling out of the project in terms of mixing.

Nice piece abstract. Care to post it at the Hub?

It would be the first tune there and we can experiment with how the process works.

It looks pretty daunting to me as well, Bidoche. I've been told it's actually pretty simple though. We'll see...

So Cholas, where can we see how your band recorded its demo? I checked the Cassband project, but the page had no information! Perhaps you could get one of your friends to give us a better link?

I'm not real sure what you are referring to as far as demo. I haven't added any tunes yet. If there appears in the top bar a play option and it's a funky(odd) tune that's because we don't have any of our own songs yet. I thought that bar only appeared on mine. Sorry, I'll see about removing it.

From what I can tell, to add tunes you'll need to log in with the password which I can send, maybe PM.(Moderators?) Then hit 'upload song' and it takes you to a different window with instruction.

A possible example: If a tune played on acoustic guitar were posted, then those with passwords can also download it, transfer it to their favorite mixing tools(we use audacity) and add more instruments, voice, etc. then repost. Before long we should have a couple experimentals put together.

That's my current understanding anyway. Maybe today, time permitting, I'll try it out to get a better picture.

Here's the Audacity link:

Abstract and Nomad: Would it be ok for you or I to upload the beautiful tune at the beginning of this thread for starters?

Update: I uploaded a simple tune with acoustic/bass/vocals(unfortunately all on 1 track) to see how this set-up works.

Please have at it, any/all. Baby steps here.....

I can't figure out how to make the song down-loadable for persons logging in only so I'm a bit concerned about privacy.

Hate to bother Moderators again but maybe this thread could be moved to The Swamp for better protection and ease of sharing the password(without the need for PM's.)?

fine by me.

I'd like to contribute more when I get time. I may do something with your latest, Abstract, if inspiration strikes.

Hi everyone,

I'd like to contribute too, my main instrument is the guitar. Just finished a short clip 20~ sec, that was something I had playing in my mind, feel free to edit/criticize/express opinion.

If you want I could upload the tracks w/o effects and the midi too. I'll give a try to create something for the story of evil magician.

Hope it can inspire other ones to create something better, as the ones in here inspired me to try it

Hey Str!ke. Nice little ditty you have there. I played around with it a bit yesterday and imo it really sounds like an intro to a song that is just about to change tempo/rhythm. Maybe to something heavier/grungy or even reggae-ish. (Hope that makes sense)

Thanks for sharing. Care to post it at the Hub mentioned in a previous post? Be nice to get that 'library' filled up a bit.
