Watched and listened to a tiny goldcrest singing in the garden the other day, something this -


Goldcrests vie with the similar-looking firecrest as being the smallest bird in Europe weighing about 5.5 grams and around 3 and a 1/2 inches long.

Some years ago a pair attempted to nest in a conifer tree in the garden. I spent ages trying to locate it - bird books say it's usually situated high up on an outer branch. However, this pair had chosen to build the nest about 18 inches off the ground (obviously they had't seen the literature!) Subsequently, the local cat easily found it, killed the sitting bird and pulling the nest over on to the ground. I retrieved some of the dislodged eggs and nest and took this following record shot to show the marvelous construction and minuscule eggs:

It must be the spring or something ;-)

Proud mamma and her 4 puppies. 6 days old. One is asleep, two are already cuddling and the last one is busy feeding.
She brought 12, but only these 4 made it past day 1.
