Not long ago near where I live, Wal-Mart closed one of their stores and opened one twice as big about two or three blocks away. Meanwhile the old store they closed remains vacant and appears to not be for sale or used for anything. Very strange.

The Economic Collapse blog had a link to this list of the stores that are closing - http://researchroom.economicpolicyjournal.com/2016/01/announced-list-of-walmart-planned-store.html
Quote from article :
" Wal-Mart is closing 269 stores, including 154 inside the United States"
But in addition to Wal-Mart, the article says that 12 more major retailers are closing down hundreds of stores, is economic collapse only reason for closing?

Wal-Mart Stores in the meantime is expected to close a Neighborhood Market store in Chicago by Jan. 25, local reports said. That store was the first Neighborhood Market in Chicago, opening to much local fanfare in 2011.
Walmart officials were not immediately available for further comment.
Sears noted the 150 stores (108 Kmart, 42 Sears) set for closure generated about $1.2 billion in sales over the past 12 months, they generated an adjusted EBITDA loss of approximately $60 million over that same period.
Sprouts Farmers Market on Thursday said it would open 11 new stores during its second quarter beginning in April, including two additional stores in Florida, where the first Sprouts in the Sunshine State is set to open next month.
Sprouts said it intended to open 35 stores during the fiscal year.
Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton praised Walmart and its founder Sam Walton in speech excerpts included as part of WikiLeaks’ release of presidential campaign chairman John Podesta’s emails.

According to the leaked emails, Clinton recounted that Walton called her and said, “[M]y wife and daughter think we need a woman on the board and we can't think of anybody else besides you. I said, well, you have a way with words, Sam. That's really flattering. But, sure, I'll be on the board of Walmart.” Clinton said she was the only woman on Walmart’s board at that time.
In a speech at London Drug Toronto in November 2013,
Clinton said while some may criticize Walmart, “those stores served a
real purpose, not only for employment and low cost goods, but they did become a way for
people who wanted to see what else was available to them, could go and look, products that never were readily available in a
lot of those places before.”
Clinton also called Walton “a great patriot” and said he was “one of the first American business executives to really embrace technology” in remarks to investment research firm Sanford Bernstein in May 2013.
Black Magic????????
At the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal’s Bell International Leaders series in March 2014, Clinton claimed credit for convincing Walton to raise corporate taxes to pay for education.
“And Sam Walton kept shaking his head saying, I don't understand how you convinced me to do that. And I said, well, because you became convinced that you need an educated workforce, you need more people in the middle class to buy more of your goods.”
Watch the Growth of Walmart and Sam's Club (Animation) 1962-2010

The ever so popular Walmart growth map gets an update, and yes, it still looks like a wildfire. I’ve added openings up to the planned one in Virgina (in May of this year) as well as openings for Sam’s Club, the Walmart-owned warehouse club. Hawaii, Alaska, and Puerto Rico locations are in there too now.
As you might expect, Sam’s Club locations appear to trail Walmart locations (except in Hawaii and Alaska).
What you might not expect though is all the Puerto Rico locations. I didn’t realize it was so popular there. They got their first one in 1971, well before the first California location in 1990. Whether that’s a good or bad thing is debatable.
Check it out for yourself. See any interesting patterns?
