Alright, I'm gonna smoke. What's the best plan of attack?

How do you smoke pipe? I tried and dang it was waaaay too heavy for me. It was like inhaling huge Cuban cigar smoke. On the other hand, you don't smoke the paper which is better than smoking cigz.
There are pipes of all shapes and sizes and some are very very light and others are heavy. Others still can be long like a flute like those of Native Indians peace pipes but hard to put in your back pocket. :)

The tobacco itself is also varied, some are 'flavored', some are herbs, medicinal, etc., some are very light that does not make you cough up a storm, others are very heavy that when you cough, so does your lungs pop out :) So you have a LOT of choices and by asking and experimenting, you choose the tobacco and pipe to suit you. Its like finding the right clothes for you, eh?

I make SURE there is NO ADDICTIVES and get to KNOW THE DEALER so I try my best to KNOW THE SOURCE/MFR of the tobacco and the pipe. I think that is the best you can do. I try to get as 'natural' as I get for both products if possible.

Now - as you know there are filtered pipes and water pipes as well - so that the smoke is Filtered/COOLED down - and the water acts as filter in a sense but then where does the nicotine go? Isn't that what we want?

Now how's that for variety?

In terms of variety, what can you say about a cig/fag/cigar/rollups ??? IMO, they are boring, but as for portability - well - perhaps that is the only thing there that these things (cigs) have an advantage but I have a pipe, pouch, bic lighter, and tobacco and it suits me just fine :p

Good Point! While camping out on Big Island, HI, i did smoke pipe tobacco instead of cigarette tobacco.
Way cheaper -- way tastier -- way more phun! and Tim, the Tobacconist had a phab cigar store with really
yummy tobacco -- don't know if it was organic, but it tasted so good it could have been.
i do know he carried really top of the line products.

When i moved to Kauai, i had to order pipe tobacco from him to be shipped over to me in Kauai -- there were
no tobacco-cigar stores with any decent pipe tobacco there. i felt deprived in Kauai.
If you ever go to Hawaii -- bring your own tobacco -- the prices on the islands are outrageous.

i was also fortunate enuf to meet a woman on Big I who had tobacco leaves shipped to her -- that was yum.
on Maui, some friends were able to get ahold of some tobacco 'flowers' -- they were the best of all.

i like American Spirit -- both the Turquoise Blue Pack and the Non-Filter -- the stronger they are, the fewer
i smoke -- possibly 'cause they're more satisfying yes?

also, roll your own American Spirit -- delays the instant gratification compulsion -- i may go back to those.

my favorites are Shermans -- non filters -- and the Fantasias (colored papers - gold filter tips)
with the Cigarettellos (Red & White box - non-filters - brown paper) besides the tobacco itself,
it's the paper that tastes so good.

a box of Sweet Dreams Vanilla Flavor is my dessert cigarette -- and the brand my friends love most to
share with me. And speaking of sharing, when more than one of us in a group is smoking, we all share one
cigarette -- less smoke - even though we only smoke outside. Hey! This is SF. We don't even smoke inside our own homes here. (speaking only for all the people i personally know who smoke)

Nootropics & Acetylcholine Precursors

Right on I am glad I found something in the forum on this. Over the course of my usual whinery my wife found a brand of these pills and I am happy to have found discussion on this in the forum (search).

Justin: (a year ago asked) "Has anyone has tried any of these and seen beneficial results?"

The Schiff brand 21 grain Lecithin is almost caffiene for my brain (taking them once every two days cause of the buzz (feeling) I get). The bottle also implies they support a healthy Cardiovascular system.. maybe the added oxygen to the brain is giving me the happy go luck feeling. I smoke.. about 10 or so cigs a day and I noticed on the second day that I was caughing up alot more phlegm. I'm guessing that is not a bad thing.

Being 38 and a smoker for over 20 years I must say these pills are also making my heart feel funny. I may be talking out of my.. but (yeah but), but the work seems easier (pumping the blood) or maybe I am on a down hill to a heart attack.. but it does not seem to be so. I'm really just getting started with taking them but I feel much more sharper, quicker and more aware.

Thanks for sharing the info. I was not sure I would take one. Not to say that if it's not in the forum I wouldn't have tried them. There seem to be too few sources to go to for information on health and dietary supplements. Or if there are several sources it's difficult to get to the information you seek.

Nootropics & Acetylcholine Precursors

Well, I have been on the amino acid therapy and the no-wheat/gluten protocol for over a week now and I can say that, of all the hundreds (if not thousands) of things I have tried, this combination is absolutely phenomenal. I really want to thank SeekinTruth for bringing this to my attention. The past two days, I have actually been able to walk up and down the stairs without hurting and groaning with every step!!! And that's a big plus because there are 31 steps to the second floor in this house.

I put some articles about gluten sensitivity on SOTT health and wellness section over the past week. Do check them out and also do some research on the amino acid therapy business.

Nootropics & Acetylcholine Precursors

I have been on the no-wheat/gluten protocol from september last year, and i have lost weight, along with my 'bloated' look. I follow the blood type diet for type O's and I am thankful to Dr. D'Adamo. I don't follow everything said to the 't' but the basic formulae for my blood type of increased protein, and decreased wheat products.
I consume rye bread and crackers instead of wheat bread, and just that simple switch has caused a decrease in my waist size. Supermarkets in the UK are stocking up on gluten and wheat free breads, pastas, cakes and other confectionary.
Sometimes i get so paranoid that i'll put the weight back on when i do 'cheat' by eating the ocassional pizza and sweet biscuits, but i'm satisfied to say by keeping those to a minimal level, I have not experienced any significant weight gain.

I do supplement my protein intake with whey protein isolate, (for weight loss, combining whey protein with soya milk works wonders), especially when the finances are dwindling and i don't have time to cook meat. Purchasing such protein supplements from local walk-in stores can be expensive, but with online suppliers and shops (ebay is a life saver), one can get serious value for their dollar/pound. When my rent is paid, and i have some money in my pocket, i will endeavour to purchase a quality amino supplement.

Laura, it's good to know that someone else is experiencing the benefits of a gluten and wheat free diet/ eating schedule. I wish you all the best.

The Genetics of Nicotine Addiction

http://www.technologyreview.com/Biotech/18279/page2/

The above link is from a site discussing using genetic testing to determine who 'is succeptable' to 'nicotine addiction', to prevent the person from smoking. It also discusses smoking's alleged ability to turn DNA on and off.

It has a copyright notice so I haven't reproduced it here, but thought it might be of interest.

It reminds me of this transcript

Q: Well, I am certainly relieved! Now I know that I do not have a 'smoking demon' possessing me! I was really getting worried!
A: Those who fit this profile find it nearly impossible to "quit" completely.

And here is the next sentence of the very same transcript

Q: So, there are people who are actually benefited by smoking?
A: Genetics will offer proof of this.
Q: You mean that one can see changes in DNA before and after smoking?
A: Close

The Genetics of Nicotine Addiction

I remember reading that from the C's. :) I can just never remember where I read it at. When I'm surfing for news and articles to share, I look for signs, but often can't remember which section of the Wave etc it strikes a chord in. At some point in re reading, it will stick into the long term section of ye olde braine...but I'm not there yet. :) :)

Those Cs really are amazing, aren't they?

Alright, I'm gonna smoke. What's the best plan of attack?

I'd like to ask people on this forum if they have a favorite (pipe) tobacco
store they like to order from, esp. that of which is tax-free?

Currently I buy local in Oregon, from 'Timber Valley Tobaccos' and they
are charging me at $2.25/oz. Seems high. The Legislators are attempting
to up the taxes on ALL tobacco products so as to force the tobacco users to
pay for health care for the uninsured health of the citizens of Oregon so that
means I would probably be seeing pricing double of what I pay now...

Oh, yea, as I am writing this message I am beginning to see smoke dollars
emanating from my pipe as I continue to smoke.... sigh.

Thanks!
Dan

Hi Laura,

I've done some searches but I can't find what your referencing. I found a link under this heading and some posts by SeekinTruth that touched on Gluten but nothing that was more broad in terms of information. From there I looked at the cassiopaea and QFG site map http://www.cassiopaea.org/cass/site_map_qfg.htm but found nothing doing ctrl+f (search) for health and wellness so I'm confused as to where you posted "some articles about gluten sensitivity on SOTT health and wellness section over the past week."

If you dont mind (and happen across this message) and you have the time, could you kick down a couple links, please?

One of the "Signs of The Times" article sections is called "Health and Wellness".

It is one of the Category/Section Titles from the front page:

The title is a link. Click on the Title link or the "(More Recent News)" link at the bottom of each section link.
The "Health and Wellness" Section has 44 pages of articles.

Here are a couple articles I found in the Health & Wellness section

Celiac disease: It's common, and commonly misdiagnosed - 1 in every 133 Americans has it

Food Cravings, Obesity and Gluten Consumption

Could Your Stomach Trouble Be 'Celiac Disease?

Sensitivity To Gluten May Result In Neurological Dysfunction; Independent Of Symptoms

Anti-Smoking Guru dies of Lung Cancer

<< wow - 100 cigarettes a day - that's just amazing! How does one do that without hospitalizing themselves with nicotine poisoning? >>

That's the upper limit I've ever heard claimed. That's 6 or 7 per hour for every waking hour. Jackie Gleason was said to have smoked that much. John Mellencamp admitted to 80/day. Kate Moss said 60 to 80. These sorts of numbers were probably much more common 30+ years ago.
