Smoking is... good?

I just rolled my own cigarette with the american spirit papers. They were flimsy, like tissue paper. The cig was a little harsh too, it's not too practical. Also, I had bits of tobacco in my mouth. I think one of those little roller machines would help get an even and more smokable cigarette. I thought it would be easy, but it seems rolling with just your hands doesn't make for a well constructed cigarette.

I disagree! It just takes practice... handrolling is not something you can pick up right away. Try practicing for a bit, like at your kitchen table... you'll go through a couple papers doing it but it's worth the time if you're considering switching to handrolled cigs...

For the tobacco in the mouth problem, at the end of the paper you intend to smoke from, make an inward, triangular fold at the crease of the paper, kind of like a little origami, before you roll. This serves as a "dam" of sorts and will stop the tobacco from getting sucked out into your mouth...

Yeah, I figured some kind of tapering or closing the end you smoke on would help. I just need more practice and will probably get one of those little rollers. Thanks for the suggestion.

The tobacco seems to burn fast too, it seems because it's loose. Maybe I should put more in there and try to compact it some.

From my experience, it's really how tight you roll it. Don't worry if you have trouble at first, it took me quite a while to get it "right" and sometimes I still end up with wonky looking cigarettes!

I'm gonna start hand rolling my cigs. Right now I used tubes. I'm thinking of getting one of those cute little ciggie holders but some of them filter out nicotine which, of course, I don't want. Can someone point me in the right direction of one to get? I've looked online but can't figure out a decent one to buy.

Thanks

I have been back on handrolling additive free tobacco the last three years now, and its way better than filtered sigs. My grandfather and father did this themselves so I grew up with it. It quiet common in rural Norway. Handrolling that is.

But I was wondering if maybe vaporizing would be the best way to get the nicotine needed. Then you don`t get the burned smoke and tar. Just the esoteric oils. The reviews inticates a smoother taste. But I haven`t tried it myself yet.

This vaporizing pipe gets promising reviews: _http://www.vaporgenie.com/Classic.html. It claims to be made for tobacco, and it generates less secondhand smoke to. Not to expencive when you consider life time warranty.

Just my 2 cents.

Well, scientifically, vaporizing is not as effective as smoking...in fact, smoking tobacco is by far the superior
method, if we're talking about nicotine absorbtion.

Without being all nerdy and wordy there are certain metabolites which are produced as a result of the presence of
SMOKE in the lungs, which is not vapor of course. The metabolites assist in the absorbtion of nicotine.

I recently started smoking a pipe, which i inhale (love that impact) and it takes not very much tobacco at all
for me to get a good buzz going...every time i smoke a bowl of tobacco. I now realize why i would have constant cravings for nicotine: I wasn't getting enough
of it from cigarettes. I didn't wanna roll my own, i hate the taste of paper, i hate filters cause you can't get enough
smoke in your lungs at all, cigars take too long to smoke, etc.

I think you see the point, i couldn't get enough nicotine because all this stuff gets in the way of it! :P

Don't worry about smoke or tar if you're using additive free tobacco, your lungs aren't gonna turn black, i promise.

Hi, Abstract:

Do you think the type of pipe matters? Wood bowl? Meerschaum? Could certain kinds of pipes add toxins of their own?

Also what tobacco do you use in your pipe? I'm reading that nearly all "pipe tobaccos" contain additives like propylene glycol. (Aren't they thoughtful?)

Good question.. pipe stems seem to mostly be made out of plastics.. vulcanite, bakelite, lucite. :/
There's the odd stem made of amber, horn, bamboo or wood..
Clay pipes seem like they might be the most natural over all, being entirely made of clay.

FWIW, I just smoked some american spirit RYO in my corncob pipe. It was a little messy with fine ash getting everywhere. It was harsh too, and hard to get a good draw to inhale from. I didn't think it would be as difficult as it was, and it seems cigarettes are more practical.

Funny you guys mention this because its been on my mind recently too. I was concerned when you guys started talking about the proper way to light a pipe, as to not take in any fumes, and then there was the harshness of the pipe once some of the tobacco was burned so I did a little online shopping and bought me a hookah! :guru: Only problem is I'm not sure what that Shishas tobacco is all about or if I should smoke it or just stay with my regular? Either way I think it'll definitely make for a smoother puff and I'm only an occasional smoker anyway so it should suit me just fine. I'll be sure to report back on it and give you guys my thoughts on it. :cool2:

I use a glass pipe. Simply acquired from a headshop. As far as I know, there's nothing wrong with glass at all.

I use american spirit. I wanted organic but all they had at the time was the USA grown, still additive free though.

Well, hahaha, to each his own. I know for a fact that I will save money switching to a pipe, did the math.

I also, like i said, get a nic buzz every time a smoke a bowl out of the pipe :D and when I smoked cigs, the buzz
came very rarely, if at all. :( My subjective opinion is that i should get a buzz every time. I feel like i wasted money
when i smoked cigarettes because compared to my current method, i wasn't getting jack squat for nicotine.

Glass would seem to be a safe smoking instrument. Head shops are ancient history around here though. They bust people for selling items like glass pipes.
I'll look around at the tobacco shops though to see what they have.
RYO American Spirit is the only thing I see on line in loose tobacco with no additives. Most pipe tobacco is flavored with anti-freeze. :scared:
