Sol (Sun) and its phenomena

Anyone else feeling angry/irritable for no good reason? I had a very hard time sleeping last night too. Apparently, there is a correlation in CME and moods/health.
Geomagnetic Storms: Association with Incidence of Depression as Measured by Hospital Admission | The British Journal of Psychiatry | Cambridge Core

For sure, anytime there is a strong solar CME eruption i'm feeling low on energy, can't sleep well, feeling tired and having a hard time to concentrate.

So yeah, there seems to be a correlation between the solar activity and our health being. IMO

I did not see the green hue with my eyes, only on the camera. I wonder why.

I saw the following in one of the articles:

The best way to see the lights is not with the naked eye, but with your phone camera. Your phone camera will take a longer exposed picture, letting in more light and making for the amazing colors or green, purple and pink.

And here's a summary from Russian AstroAlert TG channel:

The results of the geomagnetic superstorm on May 10, 2024!

We have officially reached the maximum possible geomagnetic storm power! Kp=9, G5 !!! This is a historic event! It is only the second time in the 21st century that we have reached such a value (last time in 2003). And the next night we are waiting for a continuation of the show!

The most powerful moment was after dawn in the European part of Russia, when the power of the aurora was 360 GW at 4:30 Moscow time.

This is the second most powerful geomagnetic storm in the 21st century and the third for the entire modern history of observations (for the last 150 years)! It is overtaken only by the superstorms of November 20, 2003 and March 13, 1989 (the Quebec event - which knocked out the power grid in Quebec). The power is determined by the parameter that reached dst = -412 nT tonight (3h UT, May 11, 2024). And we have overtaken the November 8, 2004 event.

The DSCOVR satellite showed these are the highest values for this night:
* density = 57 particles per cubic centimeter (19:17UT)
* velocity = 805 km/s (22:12 UT)
* maximum intensity Bt=74 (23:03UT)
* maximum Bz:
21:52UT = -50nT
22:05UT = +63nT

In Russia 3 waves were observed (before dawn): at 21:40, 23:30 and 01:15 Moscow time.

So far there are reports about fixation of auroras in Namibia (latitude 23g S) and Canary Islands (28g N), but most likely there are observations closer to the equator - they will appear soon.

Yes, definitely the best aurora that I have ever seen. What a show, was worth loosing a few hours of sleep. The photo were taken with an Iphone so not the best but give some perspective. I lay on the pavement as they were at the at the zenith were they were the thickest but really, everywhere you pointed the camera they will appear.
So here is the first one, as I said when I first went out, there was nothing to see. When inside the house to refill my cup of coffee and coming back out the show was starting. Woke my wife urgently and this was the display in the night sky. Lasted from 2:30 am till sun rise. The birds started singing an hour before the first glimmer of the sun rising. Will post other photos later.
This one looked like an angel when view with the naked eye. The iphone bring more color (pinkish and mauve) All along, I was wondering how the satellites that were passing trough were fairing.:lol: Even saw the orbital station pass over head (have to check).

I slept through the lights here in north Texas. Yesterday, I was reminded of how the northern lights were also visible during the US civil war.
The Northern Lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis, were observed during the American Civil War. One notable instance was on the night of December 14, 1862, during the Battle of Fredericksburg. The lights were seen in the sky above the battlefield, where thousands of Union soldiers were fighting against the Confederates.

According to accounts, the lights were described as a “wonderful spectacle” and a “sign from God” by some soldiers. One witness described the lights as “a ruddy glow as if from an enormous conflagration, but marked by the darting rays peculiar to the Northern light.” Another account noted that the lights were so bright that people could read clearly by their light at 1 a.m.

The Northern Lights were also seen in other parts of the country during the Civil War, including in Boston, where they were described as being so bright that they could be read by without artificial light. The phenomenon was often interpreted as an omen or a sign from God, and it was seen as a rare and awe-inspiring event.

Here are the last 3 that I will post, they were taken at short interval to show the movement from one instant to the other. The celestial light were moving like waves, ripple and flashes. What a show it was but don't worry if you missed it as I thing that there will be more light show in the coming time. It is just a beginning maybe.

That was pointing the camera north instead of over head. Like Keit said, the camera really bring the different color green, purple etc..
Ahhh... My partner tried filming them, but it did not show. Only the overexposed picture worked, and I wasn't able to take more than 3-4 good ones. Only green showed in his pictures.
It was excruciating to wait for darkness while this huge storm was going on since 15h EST for us. By the time it was dark, we were moving out of the red zone and into the green.
In any case, I could tell the Montreal sky was a weird hue before we left. It must have been like the pictures you took if we could have captured it.
