The phenomenon was seen and felt over thousands of miles in Russia, but was especially evident in three regions Bashkortostan, Udmurtia, and Tatarstan.
Russian officials and scientists immediately denied that there had been a Russian missile test or any reported space rock crashing to earth.
Videos show how for a few moments the dark night sky - just after midnight in the Urals - was lit up, turning a vivid blue as if on a bright summer's day.
'It lit the night sky from side to side, making it look brighter than daylight,' said one account.
'We saw this while driving - there was a vibration and the sound of explosion in the sky, awesome,' said Artyom Russkikh, a reported by The Siberian Times, which collected witness statements of the flash on the night following Russian Orthodox Christmas Day this week.
He asked: 'What was it? A meteor, a rocket from space, UFO, North Korea?'
Firaya Zaripova commented on the light show in the early hours of Monday morning: 'Probably it was the testing of some military weapon, if even the ground was shaking.'
But there were denials Vladimir Putin had ordered any military tests that could have produced this dramatic scene.
Ilnaz Shaykhraziev said: 'I saw the flash in Menzelinsk. There was also the sound of an explosion and then a vibration, I felt it.'
Another witness Denis Rozenfeld said: 'A meteor burned out, not reaching the lower layers of the atmosphere.
'Before this it exploded and split into many small pieces. That is why there was such a sound, which came to us in a few seconds.
'It's a funny coincidence that such a rare phenomenon for our region has happened right over Christmas.'
Reports of similar flashes have occurred three times in 12 years in Russia. Yet experts were split on the cause of the flash.
Yuri Nefefyev, director of the Engelhardt Astronomical Observatory, claimed atmospheric electricity was behind the eerie night-to-day explosion of light.
'There are a huge number of effects linked to atmospheric electricity, many of which are not properly studied because of how rarely they occur,' he said.
Astronomers from Kazan Federal University in Tatarstan insisted there was a space link.
'This was a bolide, when all substance burns in atmosphere and doesn't reach Earth,' said Dr Sergey Golovkin, of the university's Physics Institute.
'It is accompanied by a loud bang. It could have been a fragment of a spacecraft that burnt, but normally it takes them more time to enter the atmosphere, thus they can be observed for longer.
'This was a bolide that burnt in the dense layers of the atmosphere which is why it was seen over such a big territory.
'We didn't register the flash because there was strong blizzard on this night.'

The series of explosion-like sounds rattled residents from Waupun, Campbellsport and elsewhere Tuesday and sent Fond du Lac County sheriff's deputies out looking for a cause.
Geologists say the booms were likely a phenomenon commonly known as an ice quake.
They are the after-effects of the frost quakes - or cryoseism - which are more commonly found on glaciers in the polar regions.
It's caused by water that sinks into the soil and bedrock where it freezes and expands, causing an explosive popping sound that feels like a mild earthquake.
Most frost quakes occur after a heavy rainfall or snow fall when there is a large amount of moisture on the ground.
University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee seismologist Brett Ketter tells Action Reporter Media he experienced an ice quake this week and initially thought the pipes had burst in his house. Mr Ketter says he ran outside in his slippers to see if something had hit his house.
One family had to deal with a giant, 100-foot long crack in their rural driveway.
Dennis Olsen heard an explosive sound and initially thought his garage might have blown up. That wasn't the case. Then he checked his basement, thinking a wall had split. Everything looked fine.
It wasn't until the next morning that Olsen discovered the driveway fissure.
He called the Fond du Lac County Sheriff's Department. Deputies knew what happened because other residents in the area had experienced the same booming sounds of an ice quake.
Olsen said it's the first time he's ever seen the effects of an ice quake.
Earlier this month, Canadian residents also reported hearing similar booms.
'We had the ice storm or freezing rain event, then we had warm temperatures, or just about freezing at the surface.
Then the temperatures plummeted after that,' said Dayna Vettese, a meteorologist with the Weather Network.
'That's why we've seen a couple of these events between the ice storm and the beginning of 2014.'
Around Toronto just after Christmas there was a thaw after some heavy snow fall that allowed ice to accumulate under the soil.
'It's almost like an earthquake because it's very close to the surface. You will feel a little bit of shaking, maybe if you're sitting in a chair and it happened, or you're lying in bed, or some of your dishes might rattle,' said Ms. Vettese.
However, while unusual for Wisconsin and southern Canada, frost quakes are definitely the norm in the north of the notoriously cold nation.

I stumbled upon two examples of the strange sounds from the sky from Russia. Maybe they were already mentioned here, so fwiw. One is from year 2015 (near Moscow), and one from the end of 2017 (Location unknown, but the person in the video speaks Russian).

Homeowners in Cleveland, Ohio, are talking about strange booming noises they occasionally hear coming from somewhere deep underground while no earthquakes have been recorded in the area.
One such weird phenomenon was captured by a local CCTV camera and posted online by alarmed residents.
Local residents say they have grown used to these booming sounds which were first recorded in Arizona and have since also been captured in Texas, Alabama, Georgia and Rhode Island. "I thought that somebody was making a tunnel or space junk fell out of the sky," Susan Crompton, who lives in Haycock Township, told CBS Philly last week.
"It's a rumble, it actually like rumbles the ground like an earthquake would happen but with a loud like boom," Crompton added.
"Our local, state and federal law enforcement agencies all take these events very seriously and are working diligently to protect the citizens of our community," Pennsylvania State Police Troop M officials wrote in a May 29 statement.
"Fortunately, to date, no one has been injured; however, we are attempting to prevent someone from accidentally getting injured by these explosions, including the individual responsible. These events disrupt emergency response personnel from their normal course of duty, straining local resources and impeding emergency personnel from responding to other calls for service," the statement goes on to say.
"We are counting on assistance from members of our community to keep our countries safe. We are asking everyone to please remain vigilant and to pay attention to events and persons around you."

“From poachers, gunfire, to explosions to a sonic boom,” said Jerry Hertz of the mysterious sound.
There have been no shortages of theories, but still no answer as to why so many residents have been jolted by mysterious and near-deafening sounds. “It’s a rumble, it actually like rumbles the ground like an earthquake would happen but with a loud like boom,” Crompton added.
“I’ve been in the military, I’ve got experience with explosives, I was a Navy diver and was definitely not a gunshot,” Hertz said.
Local police municipalities have been receiving reports of the booms since early April. All reported sounds have taken place between the hours of 2 a.m. and 4:30 a.m.
Crompton and her daughter heard the booms on two occasions. “It’s like an explosion and, of course, it actually shakes your house,” said Crompton.
“It is imperative that we get the information as soon as possible in order to track these events,” said police.

The Richland Township Police Department has received a few inquiries into the loud explosions, that have been heard in the northern part of the township. It appears to be focused in the area along or close to the borders of Richland and Milford Township. Milford Township is aware and has been researching. It seems as though it may actually be in Milford in the area along North Old Beth Pike. Rest assured, we are not aware of anyone having permission to blast, and hope to help in locating the source of these explosions. If anyone sees anything suspicious in that area, please reach out to Police or the township. If you are close, try to pinpoint the direction it is coming from.
There have been no reported injuries from these loud explosions.
CBS3 has confirmed that along with the Pennsylvania State Police, the FBI is now on the case as well.
Authorities are asking that if you notice anything odd, do not investigate for yourself and call police immediately.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — A joint-investigation into the mysterious booms rattling the communities of Bucks and Lehigh Counties reveals the cause to be explosions, according to police.
Authorities said Tuesday that more than 20 explosions during the early-morning hours are the reason for the booms happening in the area since April 2.
Police also say they are still working with federal law enforcement to uncover the source and culprit behind the explosions.

The booms are loud and deep, enough to rattle the dishes.
“I have heard it four times Saturday night through Sunday night,” says Carolyn Risko, who lives south of Lancaster. “It’s very loud and shakes the house.”
She and other residents of the area have been trying to determine the cause of the loud noises, but they haven’t had any luck.
Risko says she went outside after each boom but “didn’t see anything.”
Residents contacted Manor Township police and spoke to an officer who also heard the booms, Risko says. Firefighters, too, patroled the area searching for the cause.
“They can't pinpoint a location so they can't really investigate it,” Risko says.
Manor Township police Sgt. Gary Gardner says he doesn’t think anyone has tracked down the source of the booms.
“I don’t know that anything was substantially found on that,” he said Thursday. “It could have been fireworks, or someone throwing quarter sticks of dynamite.”
There have been no reports since last weekend, he noted.
Melanie Sturgis, who lives in the Georgetown Hills development off Route 741 and Charlestown Road, led a discussion on Facebook among residents who also heard the noises.
She described the noises as “four loud explosion-type sounds.”
“They were not fireworks,” she said. “They were loud and shook some houses.”

Police: Over 20 Explosions Caused Mysterious Booms Reported In Bucks, Lehigh Counties
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — A joint-investigation into the mysterious booms rattling the communities of Bucks and Lehigh Counties reveals the cause to be explosions, according to police.
Authorities said Tuesday that more than 20 explosions during the early-morning hours are the reason for the booms happening in the area since April 2.
Police also say they are still working with federal law enforcement to uncover the source and culprit behind the explosions.

The booms are loud and deep, enough to rattle the dishes.
“I have heard it four times Saturday night through Sunday night,” says Carolyn Risko, who lives south of Lancaster. “It’s very loud and shakes the house.”
She and other residents of the area have been trying to determine the cause of the loud noises, but they haven’t had any luck.
Risko says she went outside after each boom but “didn’t see anything.”
Residents contacted Manor Township police and spoke to an officer who also heard the booms, Risko says. Firefighters, too, patroled the area searching for the cause.
“They can't pinpoint a location so they can't really investigate it,” Risko says.
Manor Township police Sgt. Gary Gardner says he doesn’t think anyone has tracked down the source of the booms.
“I don’t know that anything was substantially found on that,” he said Thursday. “It could have been fireworks, or someone throwing quarter sticks of dynamite.”
There have been no reports since last weekend, he noted.
Melanie Sturgis, who lives in the Georgetown Hills development off Route 741 and Charlestown Road, led a discussion on Facebook among residents who also heard the noises.
She described the noises as “four loud explosion-type sounds.”
“They were not fireworks,” she said. “They were loud and shook some houses.”

Washington (AP) -- As President Donald Trump was heading to Singapore for a historic summit with North Korea's leader, a State Department diplomatic security agent who was part of the advance team reported hearing an unusual sound he believed was similar to what was experienced by U.S. diplomats in Cuba and China who later became ill.
The agent immediately underwent medical screening — part of a new U.S. government protocol established to respond to such potential health incidents anywhere in the world. And while the president was flying to the Southeast Asian city state, the U.S. delegation preparing for his arrival was exchanging urgent messages with the State Department headquarters back in Washington, including the agency's Diplomatic Security and the U.S. Secret Service.
It turned out to be a false alarm, according to four U.S. officials familiar with the matter, who were not authorized to speak to the matter publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity. But the rapid response underscored how seriously the Trump administration views the potential risks at far-flung diplomatic outposts. So far, Americans who have served in at least seven cities in four countries have been tested for possible exposure, with 26 Americans "medically confirmed" to have been hurt.
The incidents have become a new source of anxiety for U.S. officials working overseas and their families — one that remains shrouded in mystery because of investigators' inability to say what or who is responsible for the unexplained incidents that started more than 18 months ago. Cuba patients have been found to have a range of symptoms and diagnoses including mild traumatic brain injury, also known as concussions.
Medical officials at the State Department are now encouraging U.S. diplomats abroad to be proactive in immediately reporting suspicious sounds or unexplained symptoms, an aggressive approach that U.S. officials described as "an abundance of caution."
In the immediate aftermath of the first Cuba incidents, there was no established procedure for how to investigate incidents or treat patients. Over many months, State Department officials working with doctors from the University of Pennsylvania, along with a Miami doctor initially dispatched to Havana, have developed a thorough, formalized protocol that involves screening prospective patients for the most rapid-onset symptoms of brain injury. Diplomats newly sent to posts including Havana are given "baseline" screenings so that if they later report an incident, their tests results can be compared to their results from before they arrived in the country.
Details of the previously unreported incident in Singapore, which ended up having no impact on the June 12 meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, are emerging as the White House moves ahead with planning for Trump's next high-stakes, face-to-face meeting with a foreign leader outside the United States: a potential mid-July summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin next month in the Austrian capital of Vienna.
To be sure, there has been no determination by the U.S. that the health incidents have occurred in locations other than Cuba and China. Until late last month, the only known incidents affected U.S. officials in Havana who were struck by what the State Department called "specific attacks."
Yet, the discovery in May of at least one case in China — affecting an American employee at the U.S. Consulate in Guangzhou — has added to the sense that any unusual sound or concerning physical symptom should be treated with seriousness until a suspicious incident can be ruled out, U.S. diplomats told The Associated Press.
Asked for comment about the Singapore incident, the State Department would say only that "the health, safety, and well-being of U.S. citizens and U.S. government employees and their family members are our greatest concern."
"For privacy reasons we are not able to provide information on individual medical cases," it added.
Similar concern prompted a USAID employee in Uzbekistan to be pulled out of the Central Asian country for medical testing late last year after reporting symptoms he suspected resulted from the same kind of "health attack" that then-Secretary of State Rex Tillerson had warned about in Cuba. That warning was accompanied by a new travel warning for Americans living in or visiting Cuba and a steep reduction in staffing at what was then the 1-year-old U.S. Embassy in Havana.
The State Department ultimately suggested it was a false alarm, saying that after medical testing, the worker was not diagnosed with the conditions observed in Cuba.
But once evidence that the incidents might not be confined to Cuba emerged with the Guangzhou case, U.S. officials reviewed other health complaints, including one of the child of an American couple posted to another consulate in China, according to officials. That also turned out to be negative, although a State Department medical team is still in China visiting all U.S. diplomatic missions there to conduct screenings of employees and family members who ask for them.
As of late last week, nearly 200 have taken the offer up to date, although only a handful — less than a dozen — have been evacuated to the U.S. for further review by neurological experts at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
Ambassador Ronald Neumann, president of the American Academy of Diplomacy, said diplomats sign up to serve knowing there are risks to their health and safety. He said the mission takes priority because the United States can't afford to cut off relations with other countries, especially those as powerful as China.
"In some places it's more violence, in some places its disease. Now we've got a new one that nobody knows what the hell it is," said Neumann, who served in Afghanistan, Iraq, Yemen and other high-risk posts. "So you do the best to give diplomats and families options, and you soldier on, because that's what the profession is about."
