Weight of electric vehicles is becoming a safety threat – report

Electric pick-ups and SUVs – which weigh up to twice as much as their petrol or diesel equivalents – are an increasing safety threat to other vehicles on the road, says a leading authority in the US.

The growing number of electric SUVs and pick-ups in the US is creating an increased threat to smaller and lighter conventional petrol or diesel vehicles, according to the National Transportation Safety Board in the US.

The safety board is investigating the potential impact of heavy electric vehicles on other cars in collisions, as the weight of the biggest battery-powered SUVs and pick-ups in North America pushes past four tonnes.

“I’m concerned about the increased risk of severe injury and death for all road users from heavier ... weights and increasing size, power, and performance of vehicles on our roads, including electric vehicles,” the head of the NTSB, Jennifer Homendy, told the Transportation Research Board in Washington, DC.

“Safety, especially when it comes to new transportation policies and new technologies, cannot be overlooked.”

In December 2022, the Rivian R1T became the first electric pick-up to receive the top safety rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in the US.

But the institute has also flagged worrying results from a pick-up crash test using a superseded Ford F-150 ballasted to 4000 kilograms to mimic the forces involved with the new electric pick-ups, as well as potential difficulties in testing the new electric SUVs and pick-ups in existing research centres.

In a presentation to the Transport Research Board, Ms Homendy highlighted the extra weight being added to electric vehicles because of their battery packs.

She said the battery-electric Ford F-150 Lightning is 900-1350 kilograms heavier than an equivalent petrol-powered model, while the electric Ford Mustang Mach E and Volvo EX40 are about one-third heavier than equivalent non-electric cars.

“That has a significant impact on safety for all road users,” Ms Homendy said.

Ms Homendy said she was encouraged by government plans to cut vehicle emissions – the current administration of President Joe Biden has a target of lifting electric vehicle sales to 50 per cent by 2030 – but was worried about the potential impact of growing electric vehicle sales.

“We have to be careful that we aren’t also creating unintended consequences: more death on our roads,” she said.

“Safety, especially when it comes to new transportation policies and new technologies, cannot be overlooked.”

The safety board's findings have been echoed by the Centre for Auto Safety, a not-for-profit consumer group based in Washington DC.

The organisation's executive director, Michael Brookes, said the demand by consumers for more range in electric vehicles was leading to bigger and heavier batteries.

“These bigger, heavier batteries are going to cause more damage,” Mr Brookes said.

It's a simple matter of mass and speed.”

Apart from the bridges and other structures that need to be engineered to support the additional weight, there's also ferries and trucks that will probably need to be re-engineered to transport the vehicles I guess.

Ms Bradbrook was labelled a "towering hypocrite" after her eco-flouting trip to Waitrose in Stroud, Gloucs, the Sun reported.

The 50-year-old, whose XR group has caused traffic chaos, drove there in a polluting 1.5 litre diesel car.
Tory MP Chris Loder told The Sun: "The contents of this woman's shopping trolley speaks volumes about the hypocrisy of people who think nothing of causing chaos.

"It would be hilarious if it wasn't so predictable.

There is no scientific evidence or method that can determine how much of the temperature change since 1900 was caused by humans. We know that temperature has varied greatly over the millennia. We also know that for virtually all of that time, global warming and cooling were driven entirely by natural forces.

^-- pay attention to the chart on page # 05. You'll see this happening all over right now (150 cities this year, 350 cities next year) - they are DE-population centers. This was part of the 1982 RIO Earth Summit (Maurice Strong) and the re-wilding of the world after the population kill-off. 174 nations agreed to kill off their local populations by 2030.

For example, large malls are being closed all over the world and being 'redeveloped' into 15-minute prison gulags (prison camps). The fake CV-19 was used to kill of many small, local producers. Soon you see all international shipping stop and companies like Amazon stop shipping as well. All big box stores including Walmart will disappear.

In a 15-minute depopulation center you will only be allowed 3/three new items of clothing PER YEAR. Will it be shoes?, gloves?, a hat?, pants?, underwear? - only 3/three items per year.

There will be no jobs, no industry, no shipping, no stores.

Provided you had no wrong-think (they monitor your thoughts as part of pre-crime) and have enough carbon, social and mobility credits you MAY be allowed 1/one short haul flight under 1,500 km (including return) once ever 3/three years - at least until the last airports close shortly after 2030.

You will be confined to a DISTRICT of about 25,000 within a 15-minute gulag. That is for life, however short that may be. While you may apply to leave up to 100-times in the first year that will be reduced to 0/zero shortly thereafter. You will work, live in that area and you will not be allowed to leave without prior approval. Inside you can only leave your assigned place to live for up to 15-minutes, provided to follow the path provided exactly and only AFTER you have approval.
