Berlin's former 'progressive' Red/Red/Green city government coalition made it a work-free holiday as of March 8, 2019.
It was introduced in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (pop. 1.628.378) in 2023.
Incidentally, it wasn't a work-free day in the former German Democratic Republic.

International Women's Day now spreads from Berlin to North Korea.

Actually there's a women couple living in the house who just told me they weren't aware that stores would be closed today.
They had to make a 40 km (25 mi) round-trip to the neighboring state of Brandenburg to pick up some groceries for the weekend...

What are the charges? Is the trial ongoing? Is he in prison in the meantime?
