What are you listening to?

Babylon System - Bob Marley

We refuse to be
What you wanted us to be
We are what we are
That's the way its going to be

You can't educate I
For no equal opportunity
Talking ´bout my freedom
Peoples freedom and liberty

Cause we ´ve been trodding on the winepress much too long
Rebel rebel
Yea we've been taken for granted much too long
Rebel rebel

The Babylon system is the vampire
Sucking the children day by day
Me say the Babylon system is the vampire
Falling empire
Sucking the blood of the sufferer

Building church and university
Deceiving the people continually yeah
Graduated thief's and murderers
Look up now
They sucking the blood of the sufferers

Tell the children the truth
Tell the children the truth now
Come on and tell the children the truth
Tell the children the truth rightnow

Cause we've been trodding on ya winepress much too long
Rebel rebel
And we've been taking for granted much too long
Rebel you got to rebel....

I was discussing the news with my brother this morning over breakfast, and he concluded the conversation with this song. It's an oldie that is certainly appropriate for today, and surly fits my mood.

"Teardrop" : Massive Attack
Liz Fraser

Love, love is a verb
Love is a doing word
Fearless on my breath
Gentle impulsion
Shakes me makes me lighter
Fearless on my breath

Teardrop on the fire
Fearless on my breath

Nine night of matter
Black flowers blossom
Fearless on my breath
Black flowers blossom
Fearless on my breath

Teardrop on the fire
Fearless on my breath

Water is my eye
Most faithful mirror
Fearless on my breath
Teardrop on the fire of a confession
Fearless on my breath
Most faithful mirror
Fearless on my breath

Teardrop on the fire
Fearless on my breath

You're stumbling in the dark
You're stumbling in the dark

"Waylon Jennings" Working Without a Net

Written by Don Cook,Gary Nicholson and John Jarvis!

Verse 1:
A
Well the road can be a circus,a death defying act
E
But the clowns don't come around no more since the monkeys off my back
A
I stand here on the stage,as the house lights fade to black
E A
Your love helps me forget,i'm working without a net

Chorus:
A D A
Up on the high wire,i hear the crowd begin to call
D E
Some want you to fly, some want to see you fall
A
Now and then i stumble,but i ain't fallen yet
E A
Your love helps me forget,i'm working without a net

Verse 2:
A
I used to depend on some things i did not need
E
I leaned on some crutches that kept me off my feet

Standing here without them now, well it scares me half to death
E A
Your love helps me forget,i'm working without a net

Chorus(x2).

Wow c.a!! That is the first time I have ever understood the lyrics to Teardrop! :D

Until now I've loved the song musically, but went off it because I had no idea what the lyrics were, they were just unintelligible to me. Unbelievable, I can love the song all over again now.

Thanks a lot for the lyrics!

Thanks for the Waylon Jennings entry c.a. Not a big country fan but his(and Willie's) work seems to stand out.

Nothing enlightening about the lyrics, but here is a great tune with very good dynamics(live), originally an unfinished Bob Dylan tune.

Now done by Old Crow Medicine Show.

Very uplifting, imho. "Wagon Wheel":

The lyrics to Teardrop are debatable, IMO. Although the ones listed by c.a. here are the popular interpretation, the singer, Liz Fraser, has a reputation for creative pronunciation and even bringing in words from other languages in her music. If you read these lyrics to Teardrop while listening to it you definitely come across some parts that don't seem to fit what you're hearing!

Here's a quote from Liz talking about her lyrics. (http://cocteautwins.etherweave.com/)
We have had people on the Internet who have written translations and they obviously have a natural talent for writing. Their interpretations are so beautiful that sometimes I have preferred what they have written to what I actually sang, it has been much more eloquent.

Mind you, this quote was from 1995 and in reference to her band Cocteau Twins' music. Still, I've often wondered if the common interpretation of the lyrics is the right one.

Just my 2 cents.

This Mortal Coil - Song to the Siren "Cocteau Twins"

Liz Fraser

Long floating on shipless oceans
I did all my best to smile
'Til your singing eyes and fingers
Drew me loving into your isle

And you sang, 'Sail to me, sail to me, let me enfold you.
Here I am, here I am, waiting to hold you.'

Did I dream, you dreamed about me?
Were you here when I was flotsam?
Now my foolish boat is leaning
Broken lovelorn on your rocks

For you sing, 'Touch me not, touch me not, come back tomorrow.'
O my heart, O my heart shies from the sorrow.Well, I'm as puzzled as the newborn child
I'm as riddled as the tide.
Should I stand amid the breakers?
Or should I lie with death my bride?

Hear me sing, 'Swim to me, swim to me, let me enfold you:
Here I am, here I am waiting to hold you.'

`No matter how bad things may get, the music will still be wonderful.` Kurt Vonnegut

Oi Va Voi is a British band that takes its name from a Yiddish-derived exclamation popular in modern Hebrew meaning, approximately "Oh, dear!" It is an experimental band from London, England, which formed in the late 1990s. Their sound draws on Jewish music from both the Ashkenazic and Sephardic traditions, including both klezmer and Judaeo-Spanish music, as well as Eastern European, especially Hungarian folk music, as well as contemporary electronic music.

And a note: They are now working with a Turkish singer to record song in Turkish for their next album.

REFUGEE
You ask me
Why it is I come to you
When someone else is just as good
I asked them but they said the same
Didn't even ask my name

Explain to me
Just what it is you have to lose
Take a minute in my shoes
Don't you feel like you've paid your dues
Already

I'll show you
That all our fates are so entwined
Don't lose your faith in humankind
Just don't forget my state of mind
Is fragile

Together
We can enjoy the taste of dignity
As long as you believe in me
I'll show you my reality
I've seen a few

You ask me
Why it is I come to you
When someone else is just as good
I asked them but they said the same
Didn't even ask my name

There's another refugee
There's another refugee
Oh oh there's another refugee
Oh oh there's another refugee

The video above is from their last concert in Babylon,Istanbul and there are two songs in a row the lyrics of which is below.

TRAVELLING THE FACE OF THE GLOBE

You and I we share another language
Of Inca treasures and hidden pots of gold
We've seen wonders you can only dream of
In search of legends of old

Hitch hiking across the Atacama
A desert like the surface of the moon
Make a fire, eat cactus fruit and sleep beneath the stars
In the morning we'll leave for Peru

Looking high, searching low
We are travelling the face of the globe
Down the rivers and the open roads
Where adventure lies we will all go

We venture the heights of machu picchu
Ignoring the danger sign on the jungle trail
The serpent's bite it only serves to strengthen our resolve
‘Cause tonight is the night we set sail

Looking high, searching low
We are travelling the face of the globe
Down the rivers and the open roads
Where adventure lies we will all go

We're rafting down the rapids of the Urubamba
We sail there with our pockets full of hope
Surely distant shores can't hide forever
‘Cause where the river goes nobody knows

Looking high, searching low
We are travelling the face of the globe
Down the rivers and the open roads
Where adventure lies we will all go

LADINO SONG

Yo me enamoré de un aire
De un aire de una mujer
Una mujer muy hermosa
Linda de mi corazón
Yo me enamoré de un aire
Linda de mi corazón

Yo me enamoré de noche
En luna ella me engaño
Si esto era de día
Yo no daba amor
Yo me enamoré de noche
Yo no daba amor

If I fall in love
Sun above me love
It won't be by moonlight
Won't be by moonlight
Moonlight, moonlight

Si otra vez me enamoro
De un aire de una mujer
De una mujer muy hermosa
Linda de mi corazón
Si otra vez me enamoro
Sea de día con sol

If I fall in love
Sun above me love
It won't be by moonlight
Won't be by moonlight
Moonlight, moonlight

Oh If I get to you
All I'm wanted to
It won't be by moonlight
Won't be by moonlight
Moonlight, moonlight

Won't be by moonlight
Moonlight, moonlight
Won't be by moonlight
Moonlight, moonlight

I can say that there is something miraculous about music or I may go on elaborating on what I thought and felt listening to the ones I shared, but I don't think I will be able to, the music itself can do that better for anyone who can hear that.

Ry Cooder - "How Can A Poor Man Stand Such Times And Live"
(Alfred Reed)

(G) - (C) - (G7) - (D) - (D7) - (Am)
(G) I remember a time when every (D) thing was (G) cheap
Now prices nearly puts a man to (D) sleep
(D7) Well, when we (G) get our grocery (G7) bill
We (C) feel like making our (Am) will
Tell me, (G) how can a poor man (D7) stand such times and (G) live ?
Tell me, (G) how can a poor man (D7) stand such times and (G) live ?
Well, the doctor comes around with his face all bright
And he says, In a little while you'll be all right!
Well, all he gives is a humbug pill
Dose of dope and a great big bill
Tell me, how can a poor man stand such times and live ?
Tell me, how can a poor man stand such times and live ?
Most preachers, well, they preach for gold and not for soul
Well, that's what keeps us poor folks always in a hole
Now, we can hardly get our breath
Taxed and schooled and preached to death
Tell me, how can a poor man stand such times and live ?
Tell me, how can a poor man stand such times and live ?

Annie Lennox Live 1995 "Don't Let It Bring You Down"

Songwriter: Neil Young

Old man lyin' by the side of the road
Where the lorries rollin' by
Blue moon sinkin' from the weight of the load
And the buildings scrape the sky
Cold wind rippin' on the valley at dawn
And the morning paper flies
Dead man lyin' by the side of the road
With the daylight in his eyes

Don't let it bring you down
It's only castle's burning
Find someone who's turning
And you will come around

Blind man runnin' through the light of the night
With an answer in his hand
Come on down to the river of sight
And you can really understand
Red lights flashin' through the window in the rain
Can you hear the sirence moan
White cane lyin' in a gutter in the lane
And you're walkin' home alone

Don't let it bring you down
It's only castle's burning
Find someone who's turning
And you will come around

You will come around

Bruce Springsteen - Streets Of Philadelphia
Inspiration by Neil Young; Written Bruce Springsteen

I was bruised and battered and I couldn't tell what I felt
I was unrecognizable to myself
I saw my reflection in a window
I didn't know my own face
Oh brother are you gonna leave me
Wastin' away
On the streets of Philadelphia

I walked the avenue till my legs felt like stone
I heard voices of friends vanished and gone
At night I could hear the blood in my veins
Just as black and whispering as the rain
On the streets of Philadelphia

Ain't no angel gonna greet me
It's just you and I my friend
And my clothes don't fit me no more
I walked a thousand miles
Just to slip this skin

The night has fallen, I'm lyin' awake
I can feel myself fading away
So receive me brother with your faithless kiss
Or will we leave each other alone like this
On the streets of Philadelphia

Ayreon is a progressive rock project by Arjen Anthony Lucassen. He composes the songs and plays most of the instruments and works in every album with several good vocalists (James LaBrie (Dream Theater), Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden), Mikael Åkerfeldt (Opeth), Daniel Gildenlöw (Pain of Salvation) are some of those).

How nice to see fellow Ayreon fan (this music project is one of my absolute favorites).

Right now I'm listening to "The Awareness" from the first album - The Final Experiment.

a cry in the silence
a shine in the dark
like a rising star
the dream is coming
images of violence a flight through time and space
it's such a lonely place
the dream has started

the smoke is rising
the vision's getting clearer
and words become a song
in the dreamtime

I've lost control
marooned and cold
I suffer the fears
of a future untold
I cannot change
the shape of things to come

the smoke is rising
the vision's getting clearer
the hands of time are whirling around
I'm realising
the future's getting nearer
and words become a song
