What's the weather where you are?

Todays local newspaper wrote that approaching hurricane in Northern Germany is very similar to a storm flood in 1962 (16./17. February 1962). In 1962 the lower parts of Hamburg drowned.
Good luck to all of you hit by it - especially to you at the Noth Sea coasts!

There was a very quiet sunny weather today here in Upper Bavaria - no wind or snow yet.

Gale-Force Winds: Germans Brace for Major Winter Storm
Northern Germany is preparing for a major winter storm expected to make landfall on Thursday. Weather forecasters are warning that winds of up to 180 kilometers per hour could be the worst seen in decades.

People in Germany and other parts of Northern Europe began preparations on Wednesday for a major North Sea storm that is expected to bring hurricane-strength winds to the region. The low-pressure front "Xaver" is currently on a course from Newfoundland, Canada to Europe. The storm is expected to arrive in southern Norway on Thursday before continuing towards northern Germany with gale-force winds. The storm is expected to be strongest in the north and east of the country, although rain and winds are expected in the south, too. ...

Storm Xavier reached Wind Force 12

Hamburg: The first hurricane Xaver started to sweep across northern Germany. On the North Sea coast, wind speeds of 120 kilometers per hour were measured. Forces criticized the so-called storm tourists, as they hindered preparations. The North Frisian holms already reported some land under. The German railway put the trains one to Sylt. Storm warning raised to code red, all trains in the north canceled

Thursday 05 December 2013

Dutch railway companies NS and Arriva have canceled all services in the north of the country because of the winter gales battering the Netherlands.

The KNMI weather bureau has raised its weather warning to code red for coastal areas and the northern provinces, with winds of up to 130 kph expected in the Wadden Sea area.

One ship has reported waves of 11.80 meters high north of the island of Schiermonnikoog, Nos television said.

The Oosterschelde storm defenses have been closed for the first time in six years. The forecast gales coincide with the spring tides, meaning high water levels all along the Dutch coast.

According to RTL news, by 14.45 hrs. the emergency services had already had 440 reports of damage.

Flights

Airline KLM has canceled ' a significant number' of KLM and Cityhopper flights in readiness for the bad weather. DFDS Seaways has scrapped Thursday evening's crossing from IJmuiden to Newcastle.

The strong winds will die down marginally overnight, bringing snow flurries on Friday morning. The snow will clear and give way to drier weather with frost at the weekend, the KNMI weather bureau said.

The Netherlands was last hit by very strong winds at the end of October, when two people were killed and hundreds of trees were uprooted. Weather experts said two severe storms in a short space of time are rare.

Yukon Exhaust (Windchill Advisory: coldest air in at least 4 years on the way - enhanced frostbite risk)

I vividly remember my first Minnesota winter, 30 years ago, a record 98.6 inches of snow submerging the Twin Cities, waist-deep in snow, thinking "what have I done?" A friend at KARE-11 (WTCN) took me aside. "Paul, at least the cold and snow keeps the riff raff out" he whispered. Really? Then how did I get in? His other exhortation: the crime rate drops - and your garbage doesn't stink.

So much to look forward to.

One of the coldest blobs of Yukon chill in a decade is about to drain out of the frozen wastelands of western Canada. By Friday daytime "highs" struggle to top 0F; temperatures may hold below zero Saturday in spite of a bright, pleading sun.

This will be one of the coldest outbreaks of the winter - and no, it doesn't necessarily mean the entire winter will be Nanook.

If you're dressed properly & active you can reduce the risk of frostbite. The "no-exposed-skin" rule comes into play for kids at the bus stop, with a wind chill of -10F today, dipping to -20F Friday AM.

Belgium is also preparing tonight for the biggest storm since the 1960's...

And here in Quebec, it is raining or should I say "freezing rain"

Here in Tennessee, USA we had an unseasonably cold week of 40 degree temps followed by an unseasonably warm week of temps going back into the 70s. It was 75 yesterday and they are predicting a high of just 36 by tomorrow. Definitely extreme back and forth. I'm curious to see how this winter will unfold over the next few months.

Same here in SC, US. Last week really cold (maybe 30 to 40 F) to this week where it's been close to 70 everyday. Definitely interesting to say the least.

Roughly the same in NC.

They tell that this heavy gale Xaver will last about 2 days instead of just some hours. When I see pictures or films depicting this winter gale there are persons, who stand in or near the raging sea. Or there are persons trying not to be blown away by the storm. They appear to me that they do not think much that in such situations you can die very suddenly.

Here in Upper Bavaria we had we had a storm this night and today we got some snow. The temperature and weather is still quite normal for the season.

Northeastern British Columbia, Canada it's -32C (-26F) with lots of ice fog. The trees and fences now have about three layers of hoarfrost. Pretty if you are inside. :/ It's supposed to go to -5C by next Wed. Break out the bermudas and sandals!

Calgary, Alberta, Canada: -28C, -37 with the wind chill. Brrrr.

The worst part is that I don't even get to smoke my pipe right now...I only smoke outside and I refuse to smoke in this weather!

BRR - that makes me feel cold! I am holed up inside for what appears to be the weekend - it is 26 degrees F / -3 C with ice on the ground here near DFW Airport. Reports say it won't get above freezing or stop icing until Sunday. The good news is I hope to finally get caught up on Forum threads which is generally impossible during the work week.

After hearing about your weather - ours sounds like Spring compared to Canada..stay warm!! BTW - I generally only smoke outside too, but can at least smoke with a cigarette held near the chimney flue - not ideal but better than standing outside. :cool2:
