What's the weather where you are?

Of course, journalist are exaggerating as usual. Also politician loves such situation in Serbia, because they can show that they are actually working something (not to mention some nice self promotion). Its not THAT bad.

I'm afraid that IT IS THAT BAD!!!

I'm not aware that even there is river dam in Obrenovac :)

At this point there probably isn't!

It is raining much less this evening, and it will probably stop in the morning for good. I can see it in how the clouds, sky and the light on the ground looked today. But, it is a LOT of water.

Positive thinking can be nice, but in reality things are gonna get even worse!

Forecast for river levels:

Danube water level is rising with a tendency to increase in the next two days, followed by a larger increase.
Tisa river in a small increase in the tendency to increase in the next two days.
Sava water level in large increase in the tendency of a larger increase in the next three days.
Velika Morava river water level is increasing with the increase trend of moderate and large increase in the next three days.

According to graphs maximum levels of Sava and Danube in Belgrade will be reached in 20th may. That's four days from now! So in the next four days things are gonna get only worse for some areas!

And on top of that we also have snow in the mountains which will melt in couple of days when the temperature rises: http://www.webtv.rs/play/67515/sneg-na-pesteru

Persej and Avala, I hope these crazy floods are not directly affecting you,
I've seen bridges and houses collapse on TV and there's talk of mudslides.

Thank you Anthony. I'm OK. Even my house in my flooded village is OK thanks to my grand grand somebody who decided to build house on a hill. :)
Only thing that worries me is landslides which can happen anywhere. :/

Big problem for Serbia is that all the floods from Bosnia and Croatia are now coming through Sava river to Serbia.

Šabac is going down next. The limit of 'extraordinary measures of defense', as they call it, in Šabac is 500cm and the Sava river level in 20th may will be 680cm, which is 1.8m (5.9 feet) more! You cannot defend that. You would need months for that and they have only hours.

Depends on your angle of perspective. It could always be worse ;)

I checked, there isn't dam in Obrenovac. The problem is the river, which spilled over the town and over the thermoelectric power plant "Nikola Tesla" coal dump.

The panic is much worse than needed :)

I was here, and left when the rain just started 3 days ago:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=95xiIz7tq9Y&feature=youtu.be

For the ruined houses, the usual reason is human stupidity. They were told not to build houses by the rivers, on the landslides, below the river dam (just as they did in the town on that video) not to dump tons of garbage in the drain channels, and so on . . . .

Last news is that headquarters for rescue in Šabac is disbanded due to negligent management!
I wonder what happened. Maybe they realized that Šabac cannot be saved and wanted immediate evacuation and government rejected that because they would look incompetent?
Or maybe they really did something wrong.

It is the biggest flood in the history of Serbia. How bad does it have to be for me to say that situation is VERY BAD?!

I don't know is it the biggest flood, or whatever, but all a while you are alive, in good psychical and mental condition, it is not that bad ;)

Well, if that isn't STS way of thinking I don't know what is.

People lost houses , cattle and land under the wanter.
Infection is coming with flood , so the deseases and desperation will for sure take some tribute.
I agree with Avala about that panic is worse then needed , but in cases when I see that people in capitol fiiling their shopping baskets with hundred liters of water ( city water is still ok for drink) and dont think about the fact that this water is much more needed by the ones who are now in collective lodging , left their homes with babies and kids .

We are way off topic here, but,

All the while you are alive, in good physical and mental condition . . . you are able to continue the fight with whatever trouble you are having at the moment. Any situation is not so desperate, if you don't think it is desperate. Everything depends on the fact that you must be able to DO for yourself first and then you will be able to DO for the others. In plain words: with cool head you will know better what and how to do. So, everything is just a mater of your viewing perspective.

Feeling sorry for the people, even for the people you don't know personally, is normal, but panicking and worrying without the concrete personal problem which is right in front of you in this very moment, is not BEING ABLE TO DO for yourself and for the others.

Last year about this time and at some other times during the last about 15 year we had extreme floods with houses and cattle lost and much land under water in Germany. There was a lot of stacking of sandsacks and trying to save dams. People were homeless very suddenly, who also lost everything they possessed. There are people, who had the local river / creek visiting their homes. Some of them more than once. It was organized on local level that these homeless persons were not shelterless. I heard about a lot of desperation but we always avoided infection and diseases.

They were helped not only by administration and government but also by ordinary people, who just came and asked if they can help. A lot of trouble can be avoided when we stick together and help each other.

Good luck Meri, Avala and Persej. Take care.

Hi Avala,

I think you may be having some normalcy bias going on, see this thread Why Nobody is Doing Anything About the State of the Planet.

THe Misconception: Your fight-or-flight instincts kick in and you panic when disaster strikes.

The Truth: You often become abnormally calm and pretend everything is normal in a crisis. [...]

No matter what you encounter in life, your first analysis of any situation is to see it in the context of what is normal for you and then compare and contrast the new information against what you know usually happens. Because of this, you have a tendency to interpret strange and alarming situations as if they were just part of business as usual.

I think that, from what I've seen and read so far, the situation there is pretty serious, at least in some parts. And I think the more aware the people living there are about the potential threat, the better and faster they can make decisions to either get out of there in time or get better prepared. I think the fact that Persej is actually looking up info to see how the situation is, is much more effective than trying to see the situation as not that big of a deal, which is kind of what you're doing. I agree that keeping a cool head is important, but I also understand Persej's worries. And if there's anything we can do to help, Persej, Avala, Meri, and others, let us know.

The warning signs of a landslide might be helpful: _http://www.justincasearizona.com/be-informed/natural-disasters/landslides.asp
Is there a landslide occurring near you? Maybe there is a place where you can temporarily stay that seems to be landslide-free/safe, i.e. a place that isn't ''near steep slopes, close to mountain edges, near drainage ways or along natural erosion valleys.''?
