I would not have imagined it, it did not seem like a seismic region.

I remember from childhood news

the devastating earthquake that happened in Romania, hitting e.g. Bucharest back on 4 March 1977. Searching for info about the strength, it says it was a M 7.2 earthquake. So, yes. Romania is a highly seismic region.

So, yes. Romania is a highly seismic region.
Yes, there are even some sensationalist disinformation media that say they are unusual earthquakes, but there is nothing unusual.

According to data from Volcanodiscovery

QUAKES IN THE PAST 48 HOURS:
2 quakes above magnitude 5
2 quakes between magnitude 4 and 5
6 quakes between magnitude 3 and 4
19 quakes between magnitude 2 and 3
17 quakes below magnitude 2 that people normally don't feel.

QUAKES SINCE 1900:
4 quakes above magnitude 7
2 quakes between magnitude 6 and 7
54 quakes between magnitude 5 and 6
477 quakes between magnitude 4 and 5

What is certain is that an M6.0+ earthquake has not occurred for at least 33 years.

The question would be whether the M7.8 earthquake in Turkey will have a domino effect in the region. Iran, Afghanistan, Greece and Georgia have recorded seismic activity in the last week.

I am not sure if i fully understood your last entry, Puma. When I wrote that "Romania is a highly seismic region..." I didn't mean... Oh wait a minute... maybe i understand: I should have written: 'Romania is a country, which can harbor strong earthquakes, albeit the strong ones aren't that frequent...' ?

But still, they do happen there, creating great damages. So, i still would call that a (potentially) highly seismic region.

It's the same with Sicily, as an example. Many frequent, smaller earthquakes yes - but there haven't been large ones for quite some time. But, when it happened, it devastated whole cities there e.g. Messina & Reggio Calabria, 1908 • M7.0, one of the worst disasters in Europe, or Catania in 1693 as well in 1169, destroying almost entirely the city. Even the lesser ones, can induce severe consequences, like the one in 1968 in West Sicily (M 5.5)

By the way; speaking of the Turkey earthquake:

It was during the day, before the earthquakes in Turkey, my mind lingered a lot around the subject of weak building structures; and what happens to those during an earthquake. I even brought it up with my husband, and we talked about it for quite some time. Only with the difference, that our minds circled around Catania/Sicily - and not Turkey.

And the reason for that is, that i had finally found that photo i wanted to show him; which illustrates the creepy brick house wall, where the family lives right at the border with that wall, at the highest level.... And you think... - dio mio - what happens; what are you going to do when a strong earthquake hits Catania ? (You have to run down a quirky path with very steep stairs, and then a narrow alley with very high walls on each side - before you finally can get out onto the street... ) For a Berlin guy like me - who never experienced an earthquake... it's a very weird thought trying to visualize/feel.

8 hours later, the first Turkey earthquake occurred, later showing those dreadful, devastating images of abnormally many fallen buildings :scared:

@XPan I wanted to affirm what you mentioned about Romania. I agree with this as well:
But still, they do happen there, creating great damages. So, i still would call that a (potentially) highly seismic region.

And that there are also media that take advantage of the fear caused by the earthquake in Turkey to attract readers to their websites. This is an example:

Earthquake shakes NZ, felt in both islands

Earthquake 6.2 NZ.png
Tens of thousands of New Zealanders have been shaken by a 6.1 magnitude earthquake centred near Wellington tonight - and described by residents as “massive” and “scary”.

The quake started with a large jolt followed by at least 30 seconds of moderate shaking.

GeoNet says the quake took place at 7.38pm around 50km northwest of Paraparaumu at a depth of 48km. It classed the shaking as strong.

By 8.00pm, more than 60,000 people in both the North and South Islands reported feeling the quake, including in Auckland and Christchurch. One resident of the Garden City described it as a rolling sensation as opposed to “jolty”.

Newstalk ZB’s chief political reporter Aaron Dahmen, in Wellington, said he felt “a big bump, and then the whole house shook aggressively for about 30 seconds, before swaying. A steady rumble followed for some time.”

ZB’s Nick James, also in the capital, said it “shook all the items in my flat quite badly — swayed my apartment building from side to side for a good 30 seconds”.

[...]

It comes after a “moderate” 4.4 magnitude earthquake shuddered Gisborne residents amid the onslaught of Cyclone Gabrielle on Monday night.

That quake struck 25km west of the city at a depth of 25km at 7.45pm and was felt by at least 1154 people, some as far as Taupō.

”As if heavy rain and wind isn’t enough,” one Gisborne resident told the Herald.

On February 4, more than 11,000 people felt a magnitude 4.8 quake that struck near Te Aroha.

Colombia was shaken 26 km (16 mi) S of Piedecuesta (pop: 86,400) Municipio de Piedecuesta, Santander, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.2 The quake hit at an intermediate to considerable depth of 153 km beneath the epicenter in the morning on Wednesday, February 15th, 2023, at 8:04 am local time. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms.

Tens of thousands of New Zealanders have been shaken by a 6.1 magnitude earthquake centred near Wellington tonight - and described by residents as “massive” and “scary”.
