Earthquakes around the world

Actually, the event itself has already been very expertly reported here, but I'll just give you what they write about this topic in Russia.
The most powerful earthquake in the world in 2025 occurred off the coast of Kamchatka

An earthquake of magnitude 8.8 occurred off the coast of Kamchatka, the most powerful in the world in 2025.

It has already been included in the list of the six strongest in the 21st century and has become the most destructive for Kamchatka since the earthquake of 1952.

The epicenter was located 119 km from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. No deaths have been reported.

After the earthquake, tsunami waves up to 3-4 meters high hit the coast of Kamchatka and the Kuril Islands. In neighboring Japan, about 900 thousand people were evacuated, waves of up to 40 cm were recorded. Several whales washed up on the shore.

Tsunami warnings have been issued for Hawaii, Alaska, India, Australia, Taiwan, Latin America and the coast of the United States.

The branch of the FITC YGS RAS noted a strong aftershock process in the region. Seismologists warn of possible aftershocks up to magnitude 7.5 in the coming weeks.

What else is known by this hour:

► The earthquake continues, the threat of a tsunami has not been removed;

► Eight earthquakes with a magnitude of more than 5 occurred in an hour, the branch of the Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences reported;

► Another 30 significant tremors with an intensity of 2-5 points were recorded after the main earthquake in Kamchatka, the Unified Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences said.;

A tsunami threat has been declared on all the Kuril Islands, as well as in the US states of California and Oregon. The governor of Kamchatka urged residents to stay away from the coast;

► In Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, an earthquake destroyed the wall of a kindergarten. No one was injured.;

► A woman was injured at Petropavlovsk-Kamatsky International Airport (Yelizovo) during an earthquake;

► Three tsunami waves have already hit the coastal area of Severo-Kurilsk, the last one was the most powerful. In the port, the vessels were torn from their seats, the mayor of the municipal district told the media.

► Emergency mode has been introduced in the North Kuril region, the regional government has announced;

► Residents of the North Kuril region were evacuated to a safe zone after the earthquake, there is no threat to their lives, said the head of the Sakhalin region.

► 2.7 thousand people were evacuated to safe areas on the Kuril Islands, the operational services reported;

A tsunami has flooded a tent camp in the Kuril Islands. People were evacuated, there were no casualties, the operational services reported.;

► There are no victims or damage after the earthquake and three tsunami waves in the Sakhalin region, said the governor of the region Valery Limarenko.

Собственно о самом событии здесь уже весьма квалифицированно сообщили, я же просто дам то, что в России пишут на эту тему.

Wow @youlik ! Zero deaths! That is amazing. I don’t know if it’s a matter of Russian infrastructure or building, or what, but that’s unheard of in my experience. I’ve seen a lot of film and video of earthquakes in other places and people are panicking everywhere. I live in California so earthquakes are common, and still every little shake is a big event. The news acts like it’s “The Big One” getting ready to explode. Personally I don’t even get out of my chair anymore (haven’t for decades). Here we have a spike in heart attacks from people panicking. Yet the few videos I’ve seen from Russia just show people standing and talking amongst themselves. No one is freaking out. They’re just watching and waiting for nature to finish its little show so they can get back to their day. Remarkable.

In Russia, construction in seismic zones is carried out taking into account regulations and standards, some of which were developed back in the USSR. Ordinary houses for the continental part are not built there.

In Russia, such regions include, for example, Kamchatka, the southern coast of Crimea, the Caucasus, the Lake Baikal region and Sakhalin Island.

By the way, it seems that a volcano began to erupt there after an earthquake...

The videos of the powerful movement are amazing, they certainly comply with the building regulations, unlike Turkey, for example, where the regulations were overlooked.

Just a few moments ago another M6.4 aftershock occurred,

According to the U.S. Geological Survey these have been the strongest earthquakes since recorded history
1. Valdivia, Chile (1960) - Magnitude 9.5
Date: May 22, 1960

2. Prince William Sound, Alaska, U.S.A. (1964) - Magnitude 9.2 Date: March 27, 1964

3.Sumatra, Indonesia (2004) - Magnitude 9.1-9.2 Date: December 26, 2004

4. Tōhoku, Japan (2011) - Magnitude 9.1 Date: March 11, 2011

5. Kamchatka, Russia (1952) - Magnitude 9.0 Date: November 4, 1952

6. Biobío, Chile (2010) - Magnitude 8.8 Date: February 27, 2010

7. Esmeraldas, Ecuador-Colombia (1906) - Magnitude 8.8 Date: January 31, 1906

8. Kamchatka, Russia (2025) - Magnitude 8.8 Date: July 29, 2025

9. Rat Islands, Alaska, U.S.A. (1965) - Magnitude 8.7 Date: February 4, 1965

10. Sumatra, Indonesia (2005) - Magnitude 8.6 Date: March 28, 2005

A big one is missing on the U.S. West Coast or as the Cs predicted in the Pacific Northwest.

Seismic waves detected in North America

The Chile authorities really are over paranoid with this one. Here in San Antonio, the smartphone went nuts at 12:02pm Chile time and the siren in the distance sounded for about a half hour to kick off the official red alert order to evacuate to outside the designated danger zone. The local prison has just transferred all the inmates to another one outside the zone. And ships and boats were ordered out to sea beginning last night.

Nothing much happened in Hawaii or in recent hours in Rapa Nui, so this is crying wolf and might condition the public to ignore alerts and advisories in the future.

I don't have a cell phone but the cops are blocking the access to the sea and are evacuating people to higher grounds. Colleagues are in full panic because they can't access the workplace to save "sensitive and expensive" equipment. I can see the sea from the balcony and it's calm. The Chilean authorities over-react because of what happened in 2010: The military did detect the tsunami but didn't alert the population.

I was here for 2010 when after the tremendous loud shaking, the waves killed 6 persons and destroyed 200 cabins about a km west of the hill I live on. I had a fellow expat friend nearby in Las Cruces where everyone recalls the police and fireman drove around claiming there was "no risk of tsunami" (in Spanish of course). I was busy organizing my supplies in the apartment but I heard in the distance offshore cargo ships sounding their horns. Only one head rolled from that still unclear mixup between SHOA, ONEMI, and the President and her people despite being in communication with the US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center who put out a tsunami warning on their end.

I believe this government of youngsters are compensating for the previous disaster alert and management failures of the past three years from a record traffic jam to devastating storms, extended blackouts, and the fires.

All our Coastal areas on Vancouver Island were notified, and an estimated impact map quickly spread on Social media sites. Of course I went to the Bay by our house to get a front row seat, but all stayed very placid and calm.
The one measured and reported wave in Tofino, was a whopping 21 centimetres, for you all in the U.S., that’s barely 8 inches high. How the heck they attributed it to the Tsunami, is anyone’s guess.

Clearly, unlike in the US, investors don’t get to buy substandard materials and workmanship, and slip them past the government with a handshake and a campaign donation. Here the checkbook determines the standard, like the buildings 90s slumlord Donald J Trump so notoriously owned. The only difference now is that the slumlord is selling substandard weapons to Europe. Same grift, different product.

A few years ago, a forum member talked about this very good adventure book, "The Tsunami Countdown" by Boyd Morrison. If you want to experience what a tsunami is, I recommend you read it. In addition, this novel gives scientific information on tsunamis in general, how they form and how destructive they can be. It's a good story, I assure you.

No need to guess.

"Small tsunami waves are typically measured using tide gauges and pressure sensors deployed on the ocean floor, which can detect changes in water level and pressure caused by the waves. Additionally, GPS buoys can provide real-time data on wave heights and movements." (From AI Assist).

So basically if the weight of the water increases above the ocean floor, the sensors will detect it. Even a small 21-cm increased in water level is enough to be detected.
