Of course, for the "authorities" 'natural' has to mean a fire on board, or "pilot error" or something like that. Based on what we've figured out about previous crashes, some kind of 'extreme' natural event looks the most likely.

Syria: Seven car bombs exploded in Tartous and Jableh
Over a hundred people were killed by the explosion of seven car bombs in two coastal towns in western Syria bastions of the regime, according to a new assessment of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (OSDH). The organization Islamic State claimed the attacks in the strongholds of the regime in Syria
"At least 48 people were killed in Tartous and Jableh 53, probably almost all civilians, and many others were injured by the simultaneous explosion of seven car bombs, including five conducted by kamikazes" , according to OSDH. "This is the most deadly attacks in both places since the beginning of the war five years ago," the director of the Observatory said.
For its part, the official SANA news agency reported 45 killed and 20 Jableh in Tartous. Both cities, predominantly Alawite minority community to which belongs the head of state, Bashar al-Assad, had been relatively spared by the conflict that has claimed at least 270 000 deaths in the country. "
What intrigues me is the coincidence of the crash of Flight "EgyptAir flight MS804" with the many boats of the West and Israel who are there to "search for the wreckage of the plane," and attacks in this part of Syria, that are on the edges of the méditérannées. I like an impression, "they" could shoot down the plane of EgyptAir, to give the pretext to enter Syria by the mediterranean. This is will be possible that the crash is a diversionary attack to the west coast of Syria, where the Alawite Bashar and his Russian allies are.

I also think you're on to something, Kisto! All of these vessels on the Mediterranean Sea that wouldn't be in these waters, if it wasn't for the search and recuse of flight MS804. And the simultaneous series of bombings and explosions killing over a hundred or more in Syria.
This all comes on the heels of a secret visit (Friday May 13 - 14) by (CENTCOM), US Army Gen. Joseph Votel, for a two day visit with US special operations forces. Flight MS804 disappearance happened the next Wednesday morning (3 AM May 19) five days later. Too close for horseshoes - to be a coincidence? Problem is - what did they plan next?

I'm no expert but you may be on the right track here as to explaining why and how.
EgyptAir flight MS804 crash: Human remains retrieved from crash site 'point to an explosion on board'
A forensic official has said human remains retrieved from the area where EgyptAir Flight 804 crashed point to an explosion on board.
The anonymous official is part of Egypt's investigative team and has examined victim's remains at a morgue in Cairo.
He told the Associated Press that all 80 body parts received so far are small and that “there isn't even a whole body part, like an arm or a head", adding: “The logical explanation is that it was an explosion."

"Human remains retrieved from the Mediterranean Sea and examined by a team of experts point to an explosion taking place on board the aircraft, Egyptian forensic sources told media.

Egypt's head of forensics has denied reports that human remains retrieved from the Mediterranean Sea and examined by a team of experts point to an explosion taking place on board Flight 804, which crashed last week.
"Everything published about this matter is completely false, and [are] mere assumptions that did not come from the Forensics Authority," state news agency MENA quoted forensics head Hesham Abdelhamid as saying.
Earlier on Tuesday, an official who was said to have personally examined the remains at a Cairo morgue told AP on condition of anonymity that "the logical explanation is that it was an explosion."
The source went on to state that the experts had been given around 80 small body parts to investigate.
"The size of the remains points towards an explosion, the biggest part was the size of a palm. Some of the remains started arriving on Sunday in about 23 bags," a forensics official told Reuters.
The official said that no traces of explosives have been found yet that would suggest that a bomb caused the plane to crash. The team is expecting more body parts to arrive soon so that they continue with their forensic examination in trying to find out what caused the crash.
The passenger plane A320 of EgyptAir airline fated last May 19 appeared for a minute on the radar of air services in Egypt before suffering his accident, however, they could not communicate with the crew, as indicated by the representative of the National Air Navigation Service of that country, Ihab Mohi al-Din, and reports RIA Novosti.
Also, Ihab Mohi al-Din stressed that the plane did not make any sudden maneuver before falling, just as had previously reported Reuters.
EgyptAir flight MS804, which covered the route Paris (France) -The Cairo (Egypt), disappeared from the control screens while flying over the waters of the Mediterranean Sea in the airspace of Egypt.
A startling new hypothesis being considered is that parts of a meteor that broke up in the Earth's atmosphere could have taken out the plane over the Mediterranean
A shock new theory has emerged on the EgyptAir Flight MS804 tragedy - it could have been blown out of the sky by a meteor.
A rock meteorite weighing about 10,000 tonnes hit the earth's atmosphere last Tuesday travelling at 67,000km/hour, which Mirror Online reported at the time.
During entry the fireball is known to have broken up into tens of thousands of fragments - the largest of which landed in Argentina.
Each smaller fragment - estimated at between five and 60cm in diameter and travelling at a lower speed - was projected to fall anywhere between Greenland and Australia between Wednesday and Friday.
Crucially however most was expected to fall in the region of the Middle East and it's now emerged authorities were notified in advance of the disruption it would cause.
EgyptAir Flight 804 crashed over the Mediterranean in the early hours of Thursday morning as it came into land 20 minutes from Cairo Airport.
All 66 passengers travelling from Paris were killed.
Russia was the first country to issue a warning bulletin about the meteor entering the atmosphere - and it particularly emphasized the risk to air traffic.
A warning was even sent to the commander of an anti-aircraft weapons system with S-400 missiles it has deployed in Syria, cautioning that the meteorites could trigger its alarm systems.
The bulletin said the meteor had been detected by Okno - a Russian space surveillance station located in Tajikistan - as it approached earth.
Its trajectory was then plotted by its Kanopus satellite.
Amazingly it was filmed by officers in a New York police car who spotted the dazzling fireball passing overhead.
Nearly a week after the EgyptAir tragedy there is still no concrete explanation of what happened - and investigators say the first official report won't be released for another month.
