Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT): General information and discussion of Home Units

Some have reported in this thread, that it has been useful to have a day or two off, for the body to integrate the changes and you might find the same. Best of luck with it and report back how you go.

Thats what I'm finding, one day off a week works well.

Just ask Cathey Smith. Five years ago, her ejection fraction (EF, a measure of the heart’s pumping ability) was life-threateningly low at 15 percent. Her entire body was swollen with fluids, and even eating tired her to the point of exhaustion. Conventional heart failure treatments were not helping. She was on a slew of medications, in and out of the hospital, and her doctors in Tennessee gave her no hope of recovery

Dear friends, I have one question. I am not a physician, and a cursory search of websites did not answer the question. I will keep searching, but maybe someone already knows the answer?

The question is comparing hyperbaric oxygenation to just oxygenation. I understand that in the presence of pressure, oxygen will work more effectively. But if hyperbaric is not available - does it make sense to consider a conventional oxygenation machine (their other name is oxygen concentrators)?

I'm sorry if this is a silly question. But I want to understand - does an oxygen concentrator give at least a similar effect in prevention and treatment or is it completely different?
Hello,
I'm re-parsing the thread to collect some information and came back to your question.
While searching on the Macy-Pan website i found the following article which +/- answers your question, it wasn't yet posted here so do I. I also copy/paste it here in "quote" mode so any can read it directly here, it's not much long.

Is the Pressure of the Hyperbaric Chamber the Higher the Better?

The 2019 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine revealed the great significance of oxygen for human health. Oxygen is a key factor in genetic science and life. Oxygen levels affect cell metabolism and physiological functions. Adequate oxygen can maintain the normal physiological functions of the human body and keep people in a healthy state. With the increase of age and people's unhealthy eating habits, excessive mental stress, lack of exercise or aging diseases, the oxygen uptake capacity of the human body gradually declines, and the oxygen content in the human body is not enough to maintain the normal work of the body's organs, resulting in a series of adverse reactions. Studies have shown that hypoxia is an important factor in causing many diseases in humans: including cancer, heart disease, stroke, vascular disease, etc.

1. Understand the pressure of the hyperbaric oxygen chamber

Oxygen exists in two forms in the blood, one is combined with hemoglobin in red blood cells, and the other is directly dissolved in plasma. In the case of inhalation of normal atmosphere, the oxygen content in blood is about 16ml/dL, most of which is oxygen combined with hemoglobin, and a small part is dissolved oxygen. Dissolved oxygen enters tissue cells faster than hemoglobin-bound oxygen, and can also reach some capillaries of the body that cannot be bound by oxygen, so it is more easily utilized by tissue cells. The increase in dissolved oxygen content is dependent on external pressure.

Because the internal pressure of the hyperbaric oxygen chamber is higher than the normal atmospheric pressure, it can significantly increase the amount of dissolved oxygen, so that oxygen is dissolved in the plasma, cells and body fluids throughout the body; at the same time, the increase in oxygen concentration makes the amount of oxygen several times higher than usual, even in blood. When the flow itself is not smooth or blocked, the increased dissolved oxygen can also meet the needs of life activities, which can significantly improve the body's utilization efficiency of oxygen, resulting in a series of beneficial changes.

2. Is the pressure of the hyperbaric oxygen chamber the higher the better?

Hyperbaric oxygen chambers are divided into medical hyperbaric oxygen chambers and household hyperbaric oxygen chambers according to the different air pressures in the chamber. The air pressure in the medical hyperbaric oxygen chamber is very high, which is 2 to 3 times the standard atmospheric pressure, and the oxygen concentration is close to 100%. Generally, it is only open to patients suffering from certain diseases. Improper use may cause discomfort or injury to the patient, and may also lead to safety accidents.

The air pressure and oxygen concentration in the household hyperbaric oxygen chamber are only slightly higher than the normal atmosphere, which belongs to the micro-hyperbaric oxygen, which is safer than the medical hyperbaric oxygen, and the micro-hyperbaric oxygen therapy in the household hyperbaric oxygen chamber does not belong to the medical category, but the health care category. The home hyperbaric oxygen chamber has a wider range of applications. The therapeutic effects involve anti-oxidation, anti-aging, beauty and beauty, improving resistance, reducing fatigue, helping sleep, improving brain and physical strength, etc. It is almost applicable to all people, and it is beneficial to use.

I've completed twenty 1-hour sessions in my home chamber. Just wanted to report that beyond Session 1, which may have given me a very slight headache, I have felt no ill effects at all, and not sure if any effects, really. Still early. I've missed treatment only two days.

Just catching up on this thread, I saw all the references to shoulder pain. I'm in Day 27 of mine, which I'd previously referred to as tendonitis, but is much more likely a pinched nerve in the cervical spine/right scapula area, with pain radiating down the right arm. I had it last year also and it took three months to withdraw completely, but the pain is worse this time. I attribute this to repetitive strain injury re: computer workstation overuse. X-rays reveal nothing remarkable.

Because I think I know what this ailment is, and I won't be eligible for insurance-reimbursement of MRI until I've been afflicted for six full weeks, I will wait before getting any further imaging done. I had a noticeable improvement four days ago and that has mostly maintained. Hopefully I can continue to improve and maybe the chamber is doing something positive in that regard. I don't know.

Can you wear earplugs while in it? Just wondering because I think I'd benefit from the psychological effects, but I have hyperacusis and the possibility of a ruptured eardrum was a red flag for me. So I wonder if even the normal 1.3x pressure would be too painful. I'm able to do a Valsalva Maneuver.

But another consideration is I don't know if I could find 1.5 hours for a few weeks to do dozens of sessions to get the benefit. I supposed the best I could do is try to find a clinic just to see if I can handle a session.

I am thinking of doing the same. I experience ear discomfort to the point of pain or at least I use to when I was younger due to pressure changes/changes in altitude. I think the condition is called ear barotrauma or airplane ear. Possibility of ruptured eardrum is a concern here too.

Recently found a deal on Groupon for half off a 60 minute hyperbaric therapy session at a nearby clinic. Right now, they have another deal on top of that so for a 60 min session that would normally cost $110 it's only around $35 with the additional discount (the offer is for new clients only). Maybe there is something similar offered through Groupon nearby where you live?

Interesting question. The pressure in your head is going to have adjust somehow, so I'm not sure it would help in any way. While decompressing, I block one ear because of the loud sound, but the eardrum moves as the pressure goes down regardless. I saw this on a HBOT web page:
EarPlanes® are special earplugs with a ceramic filter that permit the pressure to be slowly introduced to the eardrums allowing time for the ears to equalize.
This statement suggests that the pressure in your head will change, regardless, but change may be slowed down by plugs that don't close the ear 100%.

Did my 33rd session today and finally, I am beginning to see/feel changes other than just being tired and sleepy after. My brain seems to be clearer and I have a bit more energy. My varicose veins seem to be going through some definite changes. Lungs clearing, etc.

Just beginning my N=1 on how HBOT effects someone fairly young with no specific health issues:

I found a local place that's just been set up. 2 Polish guys running a HBOT out the back of a tattoo parlor in a pretty rough end of town. The name of the establishment: Why Not? Why not indeed :-).

We talked for a while and they were very clued up on the benefits, studies etc. I said I was mainly looking to optimize health/performance and exercise recovery, and was potentially in the market for buying one after trying a few times.

They showed me some case studies and some of their own and their clients' stress scores from electronic measuring devices (such as Garmin watch and others), both before using HBOT and after it.

There were quite a few examples, they all generally look like this:

I haven't seen such case studies anywhere else so far, they are very impressive.

The main dude handled everything very professionally. Session was about 90 minutes in total, 60 minutes at 1.4 ATA.

Beforehand I'd had a busy day mentally, been on a tanning bed a little too long (slight sunburn), and had done a very high intensity sprint workout just an hour before the session. So thought this would be a great way to test the recovery benefits of HBOT.

Had some mild pain with my right ear which for a long time has not equalised properly with pressure. Usually I can force a yawn, which helps, but I was feeling stimulated and slightly nervous inside the tank, so was unable to yawn despite best efforts. The pain started to worry me a little but I pushed through and kept swallowing, then once maximum pressure was reached the pain settled down and the ear equalised gradually. De-pressurising afterwards was very easy for that ear, much easier than usual when flying even, which suggests it might have even helped "open up" that pathway and that regular sessions can benefit the sinuses.

I was pretty wired after I got out, came home, had some food and then went out again to the sauna pretty late. I noticed that I didn't feel like I had exercised at all, and when I got back home for the second time, was still feeling wired and able to focus. Also had a lot more emotions stirring than usual. I sat down in the dark and had a really nice session of prayer, feeling much more connected than I have in a long while. It felt very much like some kind of communion. After that I was still wired though and struggled to get to sleep for a while.

This morning I woke up with:
1) Zero sunburn - Unusual, I was pretty red last night
2) Zero muscle fatigue or soreness - Even managed a short morning run, again unusual after a sprint day
3) Hormones good and very little anxiety/negative emotion
4) Nervous system feeling a bit tired, certainly not 100%

Over all it looks promising so far, will see what I feel after a few more sessions.

Added: Just had a morning coffee and I feel pretty euphoric from it. You can probably cut down on the caffeine while doing this treatment, and maybe HBOT would help to break the addiction and come off it entirely.

Looks like it has actually been used in addiction treatment: [Hyperbaric oxygenation in the treatment of patients with drug addiction, narcotic addiction and alcoholism in the post-intoxication and abstinence periods] - PubMed

I’ve done 6 and my fiancé has done 4 sessions so far, we’re relatively healthy.

We’ve also reduced our caffeine intake naturally and only have tea now and not coffee anymore, the coffee use to leave us dehydrated and low on energy but have been unable to completely drop it until we’ve had these sessions.

I can attest to the anti-stress effect, I think this is because we have more natural energy available now after the sessions, being low on energy tends to make one crabby and irritable whereas if there is an abundance of energy we tend to deal with things better.

Other than that I would say we have noticed clearing of brain fog, in other words increased mental clarity and overall just feeling good. We were talking about it last night, how we both actually feel better than pre-covid times..

I am definitely going to keep up the sessions and want to get my own chamber soon.

All of the best.
