ABSTRACT
Iodine use as an antibiotic/antiviral/antifungal has been completely ignored by modern medicine as big Pharma has no financial interest in looking at iodine and its products. Iodine offers a serious and effective replacement for much of the antibiotics that are literally destroying people's lives and can be used safely with children. Iodine is indicated for the treatment and prevention of infection in wounds including ulcers, burns, cuts and other minor injuries. The greatest benefit of iodine intake is its effectiveness in killing Candida and other fungi and microbes. Iodine is indicated along with antithyroid medicines to prepare the thyroid gland for surgical removal and to treat certain overactive thyroid conditions (hyperthyroidism, thyroid storm). Nascent iodine is assimilable, effective, and easy to consume and perhaps the least toxic and least irritating of all the iodine formulas available. Iodine provides us with a safe way to strengthen our own immune system against invading microbes while simultaneously correcting a widespread and critical nutritional deficiency that causes immunological unresponsiveness. Iodine blocks the thyroid gland from absorbing radioactive iodine in case of radiation exposure emergency, protecting it from damage and reducing the risk of thyroid cancer.

Iodine for Cipro and Levaquin Damage

November 15, 2014 / Terry Chattsworth

Recently I’ve been reading about how fluoroquinolone antibiotics, like Cipro and Levaquin, poison us with fluoride. One primary avenue for damage centers on impairing thyroid function, because fluoride binds to iodine receptors, and so even when adequate iodine is present in the diet it can create a functional deficiency, leaving the thyroid without enough for good health. The symptoms of low thyroid are many and varied, and I’ve had most — ever since being “floxed” with Cipro back in the early 1990s. Things got even worse after Levaquin, just a few years ago.

It turns out not only can aggressive supplementation boost the bioavailable iodine (some doctors urge caution with iodine in higher doses, others say to avoid it entirely), but iodine also has the ability to remove fluoride from the body, to free up its receptors from toxins, making them available (in my case, perhaps for the first time in 20 years) for proper thyroid function. It turns out quite a few doctors are on board with this approach, and for now I’m following their lead.

Here’s the bottom line: could it be possible for iodine to reverse some of the damage done by Cipro and Levaquin? I think it’s very likely.

The thyroid plays a vital role in energy, warmth, and immune function, and iodine is also a powerful antifungal. This is useful for someone like me who has been anxious and sleep deprived, suffering from cold hands and feet, wracked with chills in the winter when outside, often bundled with clothing on warm days, constipated, and… overwhelmed by fungal overgrowth in recent months. Is a picture of low thyroid emerging yet? Indeed.

Lufenuron was a great diagnostic tool for me. The first dose was quite effective, nearly magical, and showed me how much of my ill health, both mental and physical, could be attributed to candida, but subsequent doses were not as effective, so I needed to find an alternative. I also wondered why my immune system couldn’t pick up where the antifungals left off.

Needless to say, after my research into antifungal iodine, which could give me back my energy and immunity, I saw a potential missing link, and really wanted to try it.

For the last 8 days I’ve been doing a protocol, which typically starts at 12.5 mg iodine and slowly titrates up to 50 or even 100 mg. Some people take many months to go this high. If that sounds like a lot, it sure is, compared to what most mainstream doctors believe to be healthy, safe amounts.

Iodine supplementation is a very controversial subject, and since this blog is primarily a diary of my progress I’ll side-step the debate right now. Instead, I’ll reference a few texts for further reading, such as “The Iodine Crisis” by Lynne Farrow, or David Brownstein’s work, plus others in the medical community, like Chris Kresser, who once was enthusiastic about high doses of iodine and has since taken a more conservative stance, and you can try to make up your own minds.

My thyroid tests have been ambiguous. I’m borderline hypo, and can’t rule out Hashimoto’s, despite my antibodies test saying otherwise. I didn’t want to jump directly into taking 12.5 mg of iodine a day, which is the standard low-end of most protocols, and Iodoral, a common pill-form is this exact 12.5 mg dose, so instead I began with Lugol’s 2%, only one drop per day, which supplies 2.5 mg (2,500 mcg). The only advantage of Iodoral pills is no gastric upset, which is an uncommon side effect of Lugol’s drops, but I figured by the time I was up to 12.5 mg of Lugol’s I’d switch to Iodoral if I felt the need. Onward.

My one drop, 2.5 mg, is about 3X times what most people would get in an iodine-rich Western diet. Some argue the Japanese routinely ingest about 13.5 mg due to higher seafood and seaweed consumption. This is a point of much debate, but relative to 50 mg or 100 mg I felt quite safe taking 1 drop of Lugol’s and this form is far cheaper than Iodoral, too, so the decision was easy.

Any health practitioner would agree, iodine supplementation isn’t to be done casually, and must be part of an exact protocol which includes vital co-supplements, like selenium (200 mcg per day appears to be optimal, but certainly no more than 400 mcg), plus ample amounts of magnesium, B-vitamins (especially B-2 and B-3), plus vitamin C, and fish oil for omega 3s. Zinc and/or copper can also be added, depending on nutritional status.

People are also encouraged to do an iodine loading test to establish how deficient they may be before getting started. This requires a large dose, to determine how much the body retains. I think it’s potentially harmful to people damaged by Cipro and Levaquin. There’s also plenty of controversy about the value of such tests. Some contend there’s no way iodine in urine can accurately show how much someone needs; others swear by it. I urge caution.

My caveat to anyone at this point is understand the disclaimer on my blog, and realize I’m not giving medical advice. I’m only relaying my own self-guided protocol for informational purposes. Please consult your physician before trying any new treatment. [...]

Speaking of neurological issues, the FDA has started warning the public about the dangers of Cipro and Levaquin, and permanent nerve damage is the primary adverse reaction listed. While he would probably urge a lower dose than I’m taking, people like Jack Kruse see a role for iodine in correcting neuropathy, and I aim to find out if higher therapeutic levels can remove enough fluoride to create a cure.

Another area where iodine may help is with metabolic problems, where some claim it reduces the need for insulin among diabetics, so I’m also looking forward to checking my fasting glucose levels in a few weeks, which began creeping into the low 90s range, after Levaquin.

Amazing stuff!! Thank you. I see that I'm going to be taking this for a while, and can think of at least 4 other forum members who should.

Thanks for this thread Laura, and all the fascinating info on Potassium Iodine.

There is a chart with doses for each disease or condition here:

_http://healyourselfathome.com/HOW/NEWSTARTS/1_NUTRITION/MINERALS/IODINE/HOW_TO_SUPPLEMENT/lugols_dosage_chart.aspx
Iodine – “The Universal Medicine” 5% Lugol’s / SSKI Solution Dosage Chart

Notice that it is based on 5% lugol's. It seems that each drop contains around 50mg of iodide, what most papers quote as the reference.

I noticed that they sell 15% lugol, maximum concentration, but it is mostly for transdermal use and to disinfect water.

Careful with doses and dilutions!

Thank you, Gaby. Here are 2 important points from the link you provided:

Don’t take iodine at the same time as Vitamin C - which will negate disinfectant effect of iodine; Take vitamin C at least 2 hours before or after taking Lugol’ solution.

♦ Antidotes for iodine overdose

√ Chocolate or cocoa - high in bromine which displaces iodine;
√ Vitamin C – take ¼ tsp. (~2.5g) in juice or water

5% Lugol's doesn't have 50mg of iodide per drop--each ml (about 20 drops) of Lugol's 5% contains 50mg of iodide. Each drop (I think specifically each vertical drop, as a horizontal drop will be a different size) contains 3.75mg of iodide and 2.5mg of iodine. From the link:

2 drops 5% Lugol’s Solution - contains 5mg iodine and 7.5mg iodide
(5% Lugol’s solution contains 50 mg iodine and 75 mg iodide / ml; above calulation based on 20 drops/ml)

The link does mention a SSKI (Super Saturated Potassium Iodide) solution that contains about 50mg of iodide per drop, but that's way more than 5% Lugol's.

The link also specifies a couple other interesting things:

Don’t take iodine at the same time as Vitamin C - which will negate disinfectant effect of iodine; Take vitamin C at least 2 hours before or after taking Lugol’ solution.

Antidotes for iodine overdose
Chocolate or cocoa - high in bromine which displaces iodine;
Vitamin C – take ¼ tsp. (~2.5g) in juice or water

So perhaps those who've eaten a lot of chocolate have an increased need for iodine?

Some interesting excerpts from Iodine - Bringing Back the Universal Medicine by Mark Sircus

Every cell in the body requires and utilizes iodine. Iodine is concentrated in the glandular tissue such as the thyroid, breasts, ovaries, uterus, and prostate. Iodine is needed to maintain normal architecture of the glandular tissue as well as to prevent abnormal cell growth. Iodine deficiency leads to the formation of cysts, nodules, hyperplasia, and eventually cancer of the glandular (as well as other) tissue.

How to Self-Test for an Iodine Deficiency

1. Dip a cotton ball into USP Tincture of Iodine. (You can get iodine at the drugstore for a dollar or two at most. 2. Paint a 2-inch circle of iodine on your soft skin, like the inner part of your thigh or upper arm. 3. Wait. If the yellowish stain disappears in less than an hour, it means your body is severely lacking crucial iodine and has soaked it up. If the stain remains and is still there the next morning you iodine levels are probably fine. In-between shows various levels of iodine sufficiency. Low iodine levels can zap your energy and make you feel tired, edgy and worn out. Low iodine levels can even prevent you from getting a good night’s sleep.

Iodine flushes bromine and fluoride from the body, but this flushing or detoxing can be very intense or even serious if one has a lot of bromine, fluorine or metals, or is ill.

Iodine is an excellent microbicide with a broad range of action that includes almost all of the important health-related microorganisms, such as enteric bacteria, enteric viruses, bacterial viruses, fungi and protozoan cysts. The minimum number of iodine molecules required to destroy one bacterium varies with the species. For H. influenzae it was calculated to be 15,000 molecules of iodine per cell. When bacteria are treated with iodine, the inorganic phosphate uptake and oxygen consumption by the cells immediately ceases.

Iodine is able to penetrate quickly through the cell walls of microorganisms.

Though iodine kills 90 percent of bacteria on the skin within 90 seconds, its use as an antibiotic has been ignored. Iodine exhibits activity against bacteria, molds, yeasts, protozoa, and many viruses; indeed, of all antiseptic preparations suitable for direct use on humans and animals and upon tissues, only iodine is capable of killing all classes of pathogens: gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, mycobacteria, fungi, yeasts, viruses and protozoa. Most bacteria are killed within 15 to 30 seconds of contact.

Dr. Derry says that iodine is effective “for standard pathogens such as Staphylococcus, but it also has the broadest range of action, fewest side effects and no development of bacterial resistance.” There is a world of difference between using an antibiotic—anti-life substance—and an antibiotic, antiviral and antifungal substance like iodine, which is life-serving because it is a basic and most necessary nutritional substance.

Iodine kills single-celled organisms by combining with the amino acids tyrosine or histidine when they are exposed to the extra-cellular environment. All single cells showing tyrosine on their outer cell membranes are killed instantly by a simple chemical reaction with iodine that denatures proteins. Nature and evolution have given us an important mechanism to control pathogenic life forms and we should use it and trust it to protect us in ways that antibiotics can’t.

“I am still experimenting with the iodine with lots of good results. Overall it seems to work very well for osteo-arthritis, rheumatoid-arthritis and even gout. I also use it for septicemia and I find it very effective to put the undiluted drops on warts. It also worked very well on kidney failure. Yesterday I gave it to someone with full-blown HIV on anti-retroviral treatment that failed, so I am waiting to see the response. It will take a few years and lots of patients to really come to a conclusion. So far I had no side effects or allergic response but, I am very positive that you can treat many illnesses with great success with this very inexpensive medicine.” Dr. J. D. Naudè Cape Province, South Africa

Dr. David Brownstein, who uses iodine extensively in his practice, says, “Iodine has a wonderful antibiotic solution without question and most importantly, I never see any of my patients complain of dysbiotic reactions from its use.”

Many ask the question that if iodine is so efficient at killing viruses, yeast, fungi, molds and bacteria of different types, why it does not kill off the friendly bacteria as well? Dr. Brownstein, one of the most experienced physicians on all things iodine, reports from a clinical perspective that in fact iodine leaves human cells in better health and healthy gut flora intact. Though perhaps we might not yet understand the exact science for this clinical observation it is logical that because of our body’s real need for iodine our biological friends that inhabit our GI track would have evolved in iodine’s presence and thus be immune to the ruin iodine brings to most single-cell life forms.

Iodide is accumulated during phagocytosis, the process of engulfing and ingesting bacteria and other foreign bodies. The iodide is attached to the bacteria and to proteins, creating iodoproteins including monoiodotyrosine (T1). Sometimes, the thyroid hormones are utilized as the source of the iodide. Iodine supplementation is a molecular strategy that strengthens the immune response increasing the power and flexibility of the immune system against infection.

Iodine also chelates out some mercury and the full list of halogens that are poisoning just about everyone.

Iodine naturally is a solution, as is sodium bicarbonate, for breaking up biofilms. One of the reasons high internal concentrations of iodine are called for in the treatment of cancer is the need to break up the biofilms associated with tumors.

Thank you for clarifying! All these dilutions and concentrations are confusing.

It would be nice if someone who understands the math and concentrations and stuff, could build a definitive chart showing dosages based on condition, product and product strength.

FWIW,

_http://www.lewrockwell.com/1970/01/donald-w-miller-jr-md/iodine-for-radioactive-fallout/

Taken in a sufficient amount, natural iodine can block uptake of radioactive I-131 in fallout and prevent thyroid cancer. The U.S. government's Department of Health and Human Services has approved potassium iodide (KI), in a dose of 130 milligrams (mg), as a thyroid blocking agent in radiation emergencies. This dose contains 100 mg of iodine, as
iodide, in its salt form. But it doesn't have to be KI. Lugol's solution, Iodoral, SSKI (super saturated potassium iodide), and Nascent iodine work just as well.

Iodine Poisoning
Thinking it was iced tea, this 54 year old fellow drank a "home preparation" of SSKI in water that his aunt kept in the refrigerator for her rheumatism. He consumed 600 ml containing 15 gm of iodide. This amount of iodine is 100,000 times more than its recommended daily allowance. He developed swelling of the face, neck, and mouth, had transient cardiac arrhythmias, but made an uneventful recovery. [39]

The vast majority of people without thyroid disease can take iodine in doses ranging from 10 to 200 mg a day without any clinically adverse affects on thyroid function. [40]

KI Blockade of Thyroid Irradiation by I-131
The Department of Health and Human Services has approved potassium iodide, in a dose of 130 mg, as a thyroid blocking agent in radiation emergences. To be most effective, however, it must be taken in a window 24 hours before and up to 2 hours after exposure, as these grafts show.

It doesn’t have to be KI. Sixteen drops of Lugol’s solution, 8 Iodoral tablets, or 3 to 5 drops of SSKI work just as well. Actually, Lugol’s solution is better than KI because the breast concentrates iodine, which KI does not have, and would better protect the breast from radioactive iodine. And lacking an oral source of iodine, applying 2 percent tincture of iodine to the skin works almost as well. Painting iodine on the abdomen in a 4 x 8 inch patch blocks thyroidal radioiodine uptake by 95 to 99 percent.

A person who takes 15 mg of iodine a day is already well protected from the radioactive iodine in fallout. The thyroid gland will retain less than 2 percent of absorbed I-131, similar to that after consuming a 130mg KI tablet.

42: Nutrigenomics: Iodine
In this recently published study, Stoddard and coworkers analyzed the effect of Lugol’s iodine solution on gene expression in the estrogen responsive MCF-7 breast cancer cell line. Microarray analysis identified 29 genes that were up-regulated and 14 genes that were down-regulated in response to iodine treatment. The altered genes included several involved in hormone metabolism, which produced an anti-estrogen effect, as well as genes involved in the regulation of cell cycle progression, growth, and differentiation.

59: Benefits Patients report taking Iodine
People who take iodine in doses 100 times more than its RDA report that they feel healthier, have a sense of well being and increased energy, among the other things listed here.
For optimal health, there is sufficient evidence to justify our emulating the Japanese and to substantially increase our iodine intake, if not with seaweed, then with two drops of Lugol’s solution or one Iodoral tablet a day.

WHAT IS THE IDEAL IODINE INTAKE

Using the Cornell Index Questionnaire to measure the number of symptoms in a thousand dentists and their wives Drs. Cheraskin and Ringsdorf found that as iodine intake went up the number of symptoms declined so that the ideal daily iodine intake appears to be 1100 mcg., ie. 7 times the RDA, which is the amount contained in most multi-vitamin tablets or in a teaspoonful of iodized salt. Ocean kelp contains about 5000 mcg per teaspoonful. By comparison, potassium iodide, which is available only on prescription, contains 30,000 mcg (ie. 30 mg) per drop. Evidently there are benefits from iodine beyond its essential role in the formation of thyroid hormone. In fact, that is the main conclusion of this review: many uses.

A microgram is a millionth of a gram, so the recommended daily dose is 1.1mg, which doesn't seem like much.

Considering that standard Lugol's solution contains 5mg per drop (5x the recommended daily dose)
_http://www.amazon.fr/Solution-iodo-ioduree-selon-Lugol-iodine/dp/B00IUMB7PM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1446467226&sr=8-1&keywords=lugols+solution+30%25

Whereas, there are potassium iodide tablets available that are 130mg strength. (100x stronger)
_http://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B00S7JFXH6?keywords=potassium%20iodide&qid=1446466902&ref_=sr_1_1&sr=8-1

And then once could purchase 60g (2oz) of pure USP potassium iodide powder from Amazon, which would equal approx 60,000 doses. Which is probably the best overall bargain, but one would have to make precise measurements and then dissolve the powder into some kind of acidic liquid for drinking.
_http://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B00S7JFXH6?keywords=potassium%20iodide&qid=1446466902&ref_=sr_1_1&sr=8-1

Of course one must factor in the fact that KI (Potassium Iodide) tablets contain 76.5% elemental iodide, so one 130mg tablet of KI provides around 100mg of iodine and 30 mg of potassium.

And this is assuming my calculations are correct.

Also, you can get Iodoral tablets (based on Lugol's solution) that are 12.5mg strength (10x stronger)

What would be a smart dose:
- to have regularly with no issues?
and
-to take for the "light" version of the protocol (without doing antibiotics)?
