Session 23 March 2013

The first one looks "professional". I prefer the second because the logo is in the center of the blue mist stuff and this creates powerful imagery and a feeling of balance.

Yeah i think so too! I'll go for the second one!

grini,

why not put the FOTCM logo outside the title - maybe at the bottom of the page?
Other than that my preference is for number 3 ...
Good job!

Hi Grini,

I had the same thought while looking at it.... it seems like the logo is competing with the text when together in the same box.

All three look good though - If I had to pick one of those I would go with either 1 or 3 :)

(beautiful cover by the way)

Nice cover Grini! It really looks great. I especially like the constellation at the top.

They all look good, but I like the idea of at least seeing it with the FOTCM symbol outside the box, though, just to see how it looks in terms of balance. Is it possible to adjust the contrast, or brightness (sounds like I'm tuning my TV screen) to avoid the visibility problem you described?

If I were to choose one of the three I'd go with #3. The title and subtitle look best when they aren't separated by the logo, IMHO, simply because together they are the entire title and need to be together for the purpose of strength (if that makes sense). And I like the logo following the title instead of preceding it because the title, which represents the subject matter within, is presented first, followed by the organization that is presenting it. That seems to put more importance on the material than the group, which I think is best.

And finally, when I look at the shape made by the title and logo in #3, it kind of makes an upside-down triangle, which could be interpreted as the opposite of an STS hierarchy- type arrangement. Sort of like the masses are at the top, supported by the idea which is placed at the bottom.

That's my take, anyway.

Again, nice job!

Added: I could have written 'pyramid' instead of 'triangle' to make my point clearer.

Eventually you could use some effects around the logo like outer glow, or stroke? The only problem I see is, that there are then 3 main plots on the cover: the star constellation, the middle part and then the logo, which needs to be shining too and could be distracting. Or using the fotcm symbol just with one color. But maybe not.

Added: Or changing transparency levels too.

I really like the 'predator on a leash' carving from Auch. The only copy I could find was one Anart has posted in another thread:

From Parallel's post, was thinking that the carving at Auch of "Thinking with a Hammer" might be a good depiction to use also. From the Cass-Glossary:

http://cassiopedia.org/glossary/Thinking_with_a_Hammer

In QFS usage, the term thinking with a hammer means approaching the object of thought from all angles. The hammer also implies hammering against one's beliefs and prejudices, creating internal friction by being critical of the thought process itself. Thinking with a hammer is in a sense the opposite of habitual thinking. Thinking with a hammer means forging new paths and connections as opposed to forcing things to fit within the grooves of existing categories. It is expanding one's mind to be at the measure of the questions instead of shrinking the questions to fit the mind's habits. Thinking with a hammer cannot take place in a state of sleep. It needs an application of will and going against one's internal resistance.

Thanks everyone and I'm glad you like it!

Thanks for asking me this, nicklebleu. When I read what you wrote I asked myself why on earth I didn't try to put some glow and see how it looks? I was trying it out yesterday and this morning. Gawan is right, if there is too much glow than it is distracting, so I put just a bit of glow. I made 2 versions with white and blue glow.

Added: I forgot to mention what I noticed yesterday. The logo on the cover and the logo above our avatars are different, yin yang is differently rotated.

That looks great!

The only thing I would do is to make the title slightly smaller and move it up a bit more ... but that's just me!

How about making the FOTCM logo several orders bigger under the headline Box and incorporate it more into the backround colours, so that it is more calm in the backround and not so prominent? Like a water mark in the backround?

That would get my vote too. :)

I'm day late in all timezones, but here are some drawings I've made. Some of them aren't final versions yet.

There are two types of the same images, one is raster (pixels), thus more faithful to original and 'organic' and vector which are slightly simplified and sharper, for choice.

I didn't see the 'needed' list as I made them and there isn't one for every chapter, some are also loosely related to the chapter content so can be assigned at will. I'll be happy to make more if need be, but let's see if these are of any use yet..

The pdf's exceed the forum attachement limits, so here are download links for the vector ones (6.7MB)

http://www.filedropper.com/lifeisreligionvector

and the pixel ones (10.7MB)

sorry if it jams someone's connection but I couldn't think of any more lightweight and easy way :(

I made the title and the box smaller and I also lower the opacity of the logo and tried out something that is called luminosity.

I tried that and the result is below. I hope I understood correctly what you had in mind.

The middle one looks really nice and neat!
The watermark FOTCM logo gets a little messy, it might have too much definition to be a watermark, IMO.
