Water

I'm happy with my water destiller (_www.jdharris.co.uk/water-distiller) but am looking for a gravity fed system for bumpy times. Was considering a DIY stacked bucket system with Berkey filters but came across quite a few damning reviews of the black filter which appearently has a tendency to disintegrate. Now I'm leaning towards 'propur' (waiting for a shipping quote). Either a ready system like the 'big berkey' or just the filters for a travel lightness. They make filters that fit the other systems such as Berkey and they're supposed to be better and a bit cheaper.

Actually distilled water should have no taste at all, only a different feeling in the mouth.
At the beginning I had the same problem as you, that there was something tasty in the water. I tried different things glass bottles, cleaned the machine, let it run for many times only steaming (without the rotor) and nothing worked (a filter I couldn't find for that machine).
I did send this distiller back to the seller then and bought another brand and since then there is no extra taste anymore in the water.

The second machine has no plastic parts in it, where the water is going through and this is my explanation for it.

Have you bought a new distiller maybe, where it could take some runs after the taste is vanishing, for another explanation?

I also have had the problem of the distilled water tasting funky. I recently acquired this distiller:

http://www.purepro.net/mh943.htm

I let the distiller run a few rounds but the taste remained. I was perplexed as the boiler part is stainless steel, as well as the condenser (which can be either plastic or aluminum in some models). I also used a stainless steel pan for collecting the water.

Finally I realized that the flavour comes from the inner part of the top lid of the distiller: it is made from a "porous" sort of plastic.
Upon sniffing, the lid actually smelled the same as the distilled water tasted. I let the lid "outgas" for a while, and ran the distiller again a few times with no help: the taste still remained. I guess the hot steam dissolves material from the plastic, every time the machine is used. Unfortunate that they did not use a "harder" plastic on the inside of the lid.

I'll send the distiller back to the manufacturer.

Gawan, may I ask which brand did you purchase, with which there was no extra taste?

I'm thinking perhaps the Berkey water filter would be another good option, especially if there will be power outages in the future.

I bought then a waterwise distiller _http://www.waterwise.com/productcart/pc/4000.asp . And a coal filter at the outlet filters this taste out. But without the filter it also tastes different. But as I see your distiller has also a coal-coconut filter, maybe the coconut causes it?

Hi Gawan, thank you for your answer. I just realized that I have not used the filter at all with the distiller :-[

As the collecting bottle that came with the distiller is made from plastic, I figured a combination of warm water (from the distiller) and a plastic bottle is not good, as the plastic surely leaches stuff to the water. So I've been collecting the water in a steel pan so far, without the filter. I'll give it a go with the filter/ bottle combination (there's a "spot" for the filter in the collection bottle) to check if there is still an effect to the taste.

The taste appears to be dissolving from the inside of the distiller's top lid, too bad the manufacturer has not used a different, "non-dissolving" material.

Thanks to everyone else as well for the input. The propur filters look like an interesting system.

FWIT, my area of study is right down about water and treatment processes.

I would strongly advise anybody to not drink tap (treated) water. I've had once a report listing all compounds they have found in regular city tap water and it's quite disturbing.

The list contained about 200 compounds but in all, the total was around 1000! Mostly organic compounds, which includes meds/pharms. Fluoride is also something that nobody should ever consume.

Truth is conventional water treatment facilities do not treat much. They will mostly take out turbidity, color and microorganisms away but many many compounds will pass right through.

The only ways of cleansing water to an acceptable level I know would be reverse osmosis. Distilation might be good as well but make sure you test the water as some compounds could still end up in the clean product (depending on initial water quality).

With a filter, you should check for the pore's size and compare with the size of the molecules/microorganisms you wish to remove. Reverse osmosis filters can have pores as small as 0.1 nanometers.

As far as desinfection is concerned, UV lights seem to be very good and dosen't leave any residutes like with chlorinated compounds. Only downside is maintenance (on large plants).

So best bet, to my eyes, would be reverse osmosis + UV. But others methods could just be as fine I guess depending of circumstances.

I usually use glass bottles to store water as well.

Peace.

An update on the above: the side taste is slightly milder after running the distilled water through the filter, but it is still noticeable and bothersome. Will go for a different distiller/ filter system.

Thanks for the update, I was already wondering if the filter did improve it. Eventually it would also be better to have a filter system without electrical power, like the other ones that were discussed here?

I have been thinking along the same lines. The ProPur filter, and Berkey, look like good options.

Yeah, the Berkey system has worked well for me, the ProPur filters would make it even better though. I will definitely purchase the ProPur filters when I can afford to replace my current black Berkey filters. The fact alone that you don't have to prime the ProPur filters is excellent, and they appear to filter just as thoroughly as the Berkey black filters. You can also add the flouride filter with ProPur, as can be done with Berkey filters.

I'm drinking distilled water only since 2 weeks with the proper salt supplements (sea salt). Since that time, a rarely go to the toilet :-[ , I feel my colon containing too much water than usual and feel high blood pressure in my head.
I am tempted to stop drinking it... is it is safe to continue?
Those symptoms have nothing to do with food, that I am sure.

I wouldn't be so sure about that, most often it is the food we eat that causes all kind of odd body problems.
How does your diet look like?

Mostly meat and fat at a 50/50 ratio.
Haven't totally drop sugar yet, I estimate a daily intake of 50g.
I just found out 2min ago I might be in overhydration, just lacking sodium...
Never mind I guess

Sugar is a absolute no go, especially in combination with a high fat/protein based diet.
It would be better for you to stop that, because this combination can really do more harm than good ;)

What about gluten and milk products, do you eat them?

I stopped gluten long ago, milk product based are rare (there is unfortunately milk everywhere in food....) but I do prefer to avoid it, consequences are awful.
I will suppress the carb as you suggested but slowly :)
:halo:

I've gleaned much fromreading these posts. One of the things I don't care for is drinking my distilled water out of plastic bottles. Until I can purchase a distiller, I plan to take what I need from these posts and see how I feel when applying to water. I also enjoy Dr. Emoto's work. Whether his work is conclusive or meets the requirements of a scientific discovery, I don't know. He also is always learning, as am I. I am inspired by him as I am by many of you all, and I intend to take some of what I've heard and make it my own. Starting with removing the distilled water from the plastic and putting it a glass pitcher with a quartz crystal inside. Might as well put these beautiful stones to work, as I have some that have been with me for ages. With that tool and the Prayer of the Soul breathed into it using pipebreathing and letting it sit in the sun, I will see what results happen. The C's seem to like it when we use our imagination in ways like this, so we'll see. I'm not ready to spin in front of it because it hurts my head, probably due to poor diet. IN THE PAST!, I am now proud to say. I am doing very well for the past 2 weeks, and its a newer, brighter world. I'm no spin spin doctor yet though, but I can imagine i might help to whirl around the pitcher! The water has already flushed out so much toxin though nose, bowel and skin. My hands smell like what I'd imagine heavy metals to smell like. I don't crave it yet, but I am drinking at least 64oz.,so its getting pricey. I live in New York, so its off the charts in a lot of ways that you just have to experience to believe if you've never lived or been here. In any event I will keep you posted and am beginning now. I will put it in moonlight to start and do the rest. Happy trails everyone!

I'm tempted to buy a water distiller, but the ProPur filters looks kinda interresting also, and they don't require electricity. Any reviews on them ?
