Iodine and Potassium Iodide

The show was very informative and I'll be checking out the online support group. The heel protocol was also particularly interesting. I want to start my grandchildren on the iodine and also their mother, my daughter. She has many symptoms, tiredness, weight gain are a few and I think she would benefit. Also the kids are showing some signs of perhaps, ADHD, lack of concentration, moodiness. It is such a struggle to get them going on nutritional supplements ( they're off and on multivitamins, currently off) and any kind of diet changes so I'm thinking the heel application may be a quick, easy and safe way to give them a quick boost and get things going with further improvements along the way. So it would be good to look into this further.

His previous TSH was 5 and after he started the keto diet, he felt more tired. After checking his TSH, it was 10.

Maybe the keto diet without iodine is problematical for some people.

The doc never insisted in repeating the tests, nor in giving him prescriptions, nothing at all. It is discouraging to realize that she is among very few practitioners that take this approach.

It is really disturbing and abnormal to see so many docs pushing thyroid hormones when they are not merited.

Yes, I felt really bad not just because of me, but because I realized that this doctor, and many others, are probably giving these hormones to a lot of other people who don't really need it. It's amazing how can they be so much narrow minded. And they are supposed to be the 'elite' citizens of our world. :/

Your friend is lucky to find that doctor. And we are lucky to have you. ;)

I'll ask if the show can be transcribed for future reference.

That would be nice so that we can translate it and share it. The show was great! Thank you Gaby. :)

Yes , transcribing and translating this show will help to spread the information about iodine as wide as possible.

I think that the problem with today doctors is in fact that their training is based on big pharma needs. They are now like an "distributors" for a big pharma products. Their training is not based on real science but on a fabricated data, false researches funded by big pharma and presented to them during their academic medicine training.
They cant patent iodine and other natural supplements. Thats why they dont want doctors to know about them and use them. They know just how to mask one synptom with some drug and when new symptom shows as a result of a used drug then they mask them with another drug. And its a vicious cycle that that affects a loot of people. I have friend that is a doctor and i never consult them about health problems because he is so close minded and he thinks that vaccines are the best thing that medicine have done for human kind. I cant trust to that kind of man, whatever he is, a doctor or a farmer, whatever.

Another small update. I found a natural cilantro seeds and i made a powder from them. The powder is not dry because the seeds probably have some moisture or some oils in them. Very strong and pleasant smell. I use a lot of it in meals. Then also bought some Spirulina and chlorella. Half an hour after cilantro i took the chlorella and spirulina. Little later a 300 mg of ALA.

I`ll do this for a little while to do some light HM detox.

An update: I did again some blood tests and ultra sonic tests. Last year my doctor suspected Hashimoto since TSH was a bit elevated and the antibodies were elevated as well (see blood results below). As it is written in Dr. Brownsteins book the TSH will increase after taking iodine and TSH went from 4,55 to 13 now. My doctor likes to put me on more hormones which I refused to this day to take. He also found some minor knots in the thyroid, but they didn't increase since last year (right Thyroid Sept. 2015: little knots with a size of about 3*2 mm, left Thyroid one knot of about 4*3mm; 2016: left and right a knot with a size of about 3mm.

Any ideas if I should continue with iodine? Because some researchers say iodine helps against Hashimoto and some other tell the opposite? When I take iodine I take it in the morning with selenium.

And here are some blood results from 2015 and 2016:

2015
TSH 4,75 (in January), 4,55 (in July)
TPO (Thyreoperoxidase)-Antibodies (February): 214
Peroxidase-Antibodies 1683 U/ml (September 2015)
LDL-Cholesterin 155 (in January), 226 (in July)
HDL-Cholesterin 59,5 mg/dl (in January), 47,8 (in July)
2016
TSH 13,00
TPO - Antibodies 223
-
LDL 201
HDL 66,10

How much iodine are you taking and when did you started?

Do you take the other cofactors besides the selenium?

Due to the autoimmune condition, it is of utmost important to take all the cofactors and even some more wouldn't hurt. The idea is to decrease to the minimum the oxidative stress.

If it is due to the iodine symporter, TSH should start going down in 6-8 months after starting iodine therapy. No point in checking too soon in that sense, unless you have hypothyroidism symptoms.

I would continue, but I would definitely add all the cofactors to diminish oxidative stress and enhance the detox with cilantro/chlorella and complementary supplements.

Yes. I looked into this a while back because of a friend and I wrote about it here. Apparently you should not take iodine on its own if you suffer from Hashimoto, but supplementing with selenium and going gently on the iodine should be ok. Check out the post, which includes a couple of articles on the topic.

A little background before I explain the current happenings.

I had a (non metal) filling of a back molar drilled and replaced because it was cracked around 5 years ago.
Shortly after, there was a lot of sensitivity and pain. I believe the dentist drilled too deep.
I went back and he was already selling the idea of a root canal. I refused and asked for an alternative. He put in a temporary filling, which fixed the pain in a few days. When the temp was being drilled out, I recognized the smell and asked him what it was made out of. He said eugenol, which is from cloves!! So the filling was put in and there was no problems.
A year after that (4 yrs ago), I had huge pain for 3 days- not sensitivity, but feeling from the root- throbbing. I wanted to see if it would get better before I would do a root canal, since it's a critical chewing tooth.

I was using a lot of salt water and dmso which healed it up, but the abcess left part of the gumline missing there. Since there was no pain or blood and no sensitivity, I figured the infection was done!

3 days ago, it returned. It started aching badly- like before. I think the iodine probably woke up a hiding infection in that tooth.
During the day I would rinse with salt water, pull coconut oil with turmeric and a bit of black pepper and a few drops of SSKI (which I found has 50mg iodide per drop), swallowing by mistake occasionally- so my iodine dose was higher than normal internally too.
I also slept with a chamomile tea bag with 3-4 drops of SSKI on it. Along with that I took my normal 3-4 drops a day of lugol's.
In the second day, the pain was unbearable- and I was ready to throw in the towel. Turns out that pain was from the swelling and white pus that built up on the side of the gum that later on I lanced with a needle sterilized twice with flame and boiling water. Right after the draining, I quickly rinsed with salt water and added a few drops of SSKI to that area and let soak with mouth closed.
2 hours after that, the pain was almost gone. I was shocked, expecting a longer healing period. The gap I used to have from the occasion 3 years ago is not there anymore, it filled in and the swelling is gone. I still rinse with salt water and pull with coconut oil with a drop or two of SSKI.

I'm amazed at how quickly the healing came and I never had issues sleeping or other detox effects during my high doses with SSKI.

I also had positive thoughts and ideas focused on the water and coconut oil before and during the rinsing/pulling, as learned about in the last C's session.

Yesterday's sott radio show ( http://www.blogtalkradio.com/sottradionetwork/2016/02/26/health-wellness-show-the-iodine-crisis--interview-with-lynne-farrow ) was a great show to link to friends and family on the basics of iodine.

Thanks for discovering this truly miraculous supplement!

Hi Divide By Zero, sorry you had to go through that! Abscess' are really really painful, I'm surprised you didn't throw the towel in and get antibiotics!
Thanks for providing all the nifty techniques to fight an abscess too, they're useful.
I'm glad you fought it off successfully, with the help of Iodine :) - you really did battle with that one huh! lol

Wow, you got amazing results, Divide By Zero. Thanks for sharing.

That reminded me that I had some aching on the left side a few days ago. It was a dull pain and some swelling in the gum. I rinsed with salt and baking soda and it went away. I think the iodine might be pushing out old infections or something, because I have an old root canal there from maybe 30 years ago.

As an update, my mother upped her Lugol's to 4 drops per day for the fifth day today (28.4 mg of iodine/potassium iodide combined). She was on 3 drops for quite a while before that and 2 drops for a long time before that. She was having a lot of detoxing symptoms at the beginning and went really slow. Now the 4 drops seem to be tolerated as well as the 3 were (slight detox like mild dizziness in the afternoon now and again). So she seems to have adapted and detoxed gently. She'll probably stay at 4 drops for several weeks, before trying 5 drops (if she does try going higher).

I'm still doing well on 7 drops twice a day. Will slowly lower at some point soon to see if there's a difference in how I feel.

I started to take iodine with low doses in November last year. And since December I increased slowly the dosis to about 6 drops in the morning and afternoon. At times I also took just one dosage, especially in the last weeks also with some days off in between. For experimenting I took of last month the other cofactors except selenium and will include them now again. At least what I noticed in the last several weeks that my body undergoes several inflammations and most often they showed up in skin irritations.

That might be a detox sign. Are you doing a lower percentage lugol? I would stick to one dose per day and take it on alternative days. If there are any signs of inflammations, you can lower the dose. You could re-start with 3 drops of a lower percentage lugol.

It is specially important to go slow in case of Hashimoto's and to pay attention to your body's signs. It is best to follow a mild protocol and build up from there.

I forgot to mention that I've been eating a lot more for the last month or so. Probably an additional 200 to 300 calories a day. Since early 2011 I was eating only two meals a day since going into ketosis, and was never hungry. I only ate because I had to, and used to eat very little carbs - average 5 to 10 net grams max a day. Now I'm eating ham or bacon with butter between a late breakfast and early dinner, sometimes twice because I get hungry. I also eat a date mash cooked in butter and add cinnamon - about a tablespoon in the late afternoon or early evening.

I think I wasn't getting enough calories for nearly 5 years - probably averaging around 1750 to 1800 calories, mostly fat - but I'm not that physically active either in terms of doing very heavy physical exertion on a regular basis. I may have had slight hypothyriodism before starting the iodine protocol and starting to eat more with the appetite increase. That started in the last year as far as having less energy, so the restricted calories may have taken a while to catch up with me, and the iodine and extra calories have fixed that.
